20 pointsBeing an escort already IS legal. I pay my taxes as an escort - it's CRA industry code: Other personal services (including Online psychic, escorts, dating, party planning, personal shopping) - 81290. I am also registered for HST and 13% tax is included in my rates. I hatehatehate the assumption that escorts dont pay taxes. I am a self-employed woman running a legal business, and I pay my taxes just like any other business owner.
-
15 pointsI respect your opinion Valerie, but I do disagree with two of your statements. I don't think there is any class system or hierarchy among sex workers, and saying you are an escort, NOT a prostitute, denotes a class system. I am an escort. I am a prostitute. I am a hooker. I actually feel so strongly on this issue I made a post in my blog about it last week - http://thetattooedcat.blogspot.ca/2014/01/whats-in-name.html I also don't agree that younger is better. The vast majority of my clients prefer women 25+ - or even 30+. A gentleman I saw recently was almost beside himself when I reminded him I was 29 when we first met. He only likes to see women over 30 - and he himself is only in his early 40s. I am proud to be an escort/hooker/whore/prostitute. I love ALL of my fellow hos.
-
14 pointsThank you for sharing your article, Valerie. I think if people want to speak to the media, we should be careful about comparing ourselves to other workers in negative ways. We don't need to be looking down on "hookers" and giving the media and the public more sensationalism. I don't agree that there is a "large and illegal demand for underage escorts", either. Discussing the difference in working/the experience is fine, I would just like to suggest that we try to keep it neutral -- so, "street-based worker" instead of "street-based hooker", and try not to compare ourselves by saying something like "well I'm not a prostitute because I do XYZ". It's fine to say, "I don't like the term hooker/prostitute/sex monkey". It's another thing to say "I'm not one of them", IMO.

11 pointshttp://www.ottawasun.com/2014/01/24/inside-the-business-of-happiness Here is the link to the Sun article which is being published. I am satisfied that the Sun did a good job within the constraints of of their readership. My photos and quotes were used with permission. I would like the opinions of other people. I am not sure if this is in the right section so feel free to move this to any other section which you feel might be more appropriate for this article.
-
10 pointsThank you for sharing your thoughts with the Sun reporter, Valerie. It takes a lot of courage to trust the media, and to speak with them about our experiences. Too often people don't reach out to us on issues that are important. However, as workers I do believe we have a responsibility to represent this industry accurately and fairly. I was wondering how you came to the conclusion that there is a high and illegal demand for underage escorts? I also agree with Kat and Cleo regarding the use of the term "prostitute". I think it's really important not to compare ourselves to street-based workers in a negative way. I feel so lucky, so incredibly lucky, to be able to work indoors and I fight really (really) hard in my personal and academic life for the life, liberty, and security of the persons of all sex workers, be they indoor or not. I count myself among the lucky ones, you know?

8 pointsIt's kind of alarming to think there are guys out there that think that another sp would be agreeable to help them find someone under age. I've never been asked or even had anyone hint about it. One thing, hopefully helpful, is the age of consent has been changed a couple of years ago to 16. That is still not, however, the minimum age for seeing sps, clients must know that the person they see is 18 and older. fwiw, i would pass on whatever contact info you have for these people to the appropriate authorities, along with copies of their requests that you find these underagers. :) When dealing with the general uninformed public, i always use the term sex worker. Sex worker means everyone, dominatrix, dancer, r&t provider, sp, escort, courtesan, whatever. They understand the term and that way we aren't forced into using the abolitionist's 'prostitute' who are trying to 'own' that word to dismiss and discredit us all. They've smeared the word to only mean the stereotype (as in starts at 14, on the streets, drug addicted, mental health issues, and of course, forced and pimped and unwilling, along with experiences of high levels of assault and violence. And they've twisted the word into meaning that, which is why my preference is to not use the word for any sex workers, not outside of those who understand the meaning at least). I liked the article overall, and thought both the writer and the Sun did a good job. I didn't even see the obligatory 20 year old short skirted, platform stripper shoed sp standing on the dark street corner for the photo to accompany the article lol. The only thing I would mention is that it seemed like you thought that you, as an indoor worker, are unable to communicate with clients about your services, etc. This is completely legal to do. The only time communication is illegal, at least for the next 11 months, is when it is in public. which is why it is the number one charge against street workers and their clients, and never the charge against any mp worker or sp incall, or escort outcall.
-
7 pointsSex work is legal. It is certain provisions around it that are not, such as hiring security or communicating in public. I pay taxes on my income like any other small business. Revenue Canada has a job code for escorting. Why is there always the assumption that we do not report our incomes, just because this is a cash-based income? It would be incredibly difficult to do things like sign a lease or a mortgage, get a credit card, buy a car and car insurance, etc if we were not claiming income.

4 pointsYes my friends, I have done it "my way"! Some may have noticed that my posts and threads are becoming minimal in nature (could be a good thing!). So as an update, the cancer continues to spread and has started to effect some nerves and cognitive stuff on a random basis. Docs tell me this is what I can expect for a while, nothing major, but all things being equal, by spring, my nerve endings will be really screwed up, memory may or may not be effected, speech may or may not be effected. They looked at me funny when I asked about my tongue! Anyway, hanging in, trying to get rid of this blasted cold provided to me by some uncaring asshole. Will continue to stay in touch while I can, hoping to be good for the next Ottawa Social, that is a focus! Will continue to drive and visit as long as I am able. Thanx, hope you all have a great weekend, play safe, play often and give the ladies lots of licks, kisses and hugs (YMMV)!!!!! Tom TheLiquor

4 pointsThere is a demand for underage escorts because I get called and emailed to put people in touch with younger ladies. Some websites somewhere posted that the age of consent in Canada is fourteen and I have been emailed by potential clients asking me if I know of anyone who is fourteen. I was advertising in the US for clients how come to visit Canada and those clients in particular emailed me about finding them fourteen year old escorts. I have also answered phones for an agency and the demand for younger ladies is certainly there. My age is posted on my website and still people call me to put them in touch with someone younger, as young as possible. When I was younger, no one ever called me to put them in touch with an older escort. It did not happen even once. I have clients who have seen me who have asked me to send them the names of younger ladies but never have I been asked for the names of older ladies. Not even once. This business has to be a cash business. I used to accept Pay Pal and I was burned. I used to accept credit cards and I was burned. It never ceased to amaze me how many men turned up with a credit card in the wife's name claiming that the wife never checked the bills. I have no personal objection to being called a prostitute or whatever. The Sun did take come liberty with what I said but I let them do it. The Sun has a readership that it needs to please and keep happy. The Sun needs to sell newspapers which is what makes it a profit. In that context, I find that what was said was fair. The point was that escorting is a legal taxable small business and it has all the problems and the challenges of any other small business. I think the Sun article succeeded in making that point.

4 pointsI think you are overthinking the purpose of seeing sps and mps. The purpose is to skip over the getting to know you and seeing if we have a connection/chemistry/agreement. When you book an appointment, that is your agreement, a sure thing. with mps, as well there isn't full contact so you get massage, relaxation, touch, all combine to make you more comfortable with your decision to do this in the first place. There is no 100% perfect choice, there are only going to be the best possible choice. If you are having trouble with the first step, then i would recommend that you do not go to a spa/parlour, but rather than you connect with someone independent. This is something that you can email/pm first a few times, and see how it goes. Having said that, there are spa attendants (red named mps) who do have profiles here that you can interact with, depending on your location. I don't think a quick handshake and hello is really going to resolve your issue that you mentioned, actually. So a massageapalooza probably not a great way to meet sps and mps lol.

2 pointsQuite frankly we are getting on. The threads having to do with cialis and Viagra speak to that. I still love the intimate contact with a beautiful woman. I loved my time with Lorraine Lacey, for example. What is your experience or interest?
-
2 pointsWith age comes experience, we all know that. What I've come to realize is that with experience comes a nice atmosphere, kind words and fun sex. I find older gentlemen usually enjoy our time (the activity and the conversation) without " powering through it ". I'm obviously having a hard time finding my words lol

2 pointsA few issues here. First, when you enter a foreign country, you are entering at the discretion of a foreign government. You have no RIGHT of entry. With that in mind, everything on or about your person is subject to scrutiny under the laws of the receiving country. EVERY country has laws regarding the movement of people and goods across international borders. Second, when you enter a foreign country, the standards of law, evidence and reasonable search and seizure are those of the receiving country. You can be as "righteously indignified" as you wish, but it comes down to four words: "Their country, their rules." Last, and probably most important? If you don't want your dirty laundry seen by foreign governments, don't bring it along.
-
2 pointsI love these spas and the women are just amazing. I've never had a disappointed time. From soft to deep they cover it all. Still need to try the hot stones though.
-
2 pointsI think the problem is that we're taking personal experience and extrapolating that into the norm. Valerie and Cristy, your experience has been that clients are looking for underage women, so you assume that this is the case across the board. On the opposite spectrum, Nat and I have not personally experienced this, so we question how this could be the norm. I would be interested to see some real figures on this. Of course, any tracking/studies on sex work, and especially underage exploitation, is going to be difficult in terms of generalization.

2 pointsI think Justin Bieber needs to be put under conservatorship so his life can be under control for the betterment. The problem is: who are willing to be his conservastors? He has been acting like teenager at age of adult so that is why he has been in trouble with laws lately. Soon he will may be arrested with a felony charge which is serious. Look at Britney Spears. Her life got in a real mess until her father and his lawyer took up conservatorship on her. Several years later, her life has been turned out to be real good as a better person.

2 pointsI have had many wonderful visits with various ladies and not one of them could be categorized as 'disappointing'. I feel that the only safer bets than enjoying a visit with any of the lovely ladies here on cerb are death and taxes!

2 pointsWhat makes them different-the location in which they work. We are all "sex workers" and the perceptions that some have of street workers don't end with them they are applied to all involved in the profession, some don't even think of it as a profession, but as a "fall from grace", a desperate time in ones life, not a choice, and so on. As I said in another article, call us what you will. The differences between workers in the sex industry are their titles, tags, labels, their personalities, styles of work, places they work from, ages, looks, manners of dress, education, rates, etc. None of which make any of us better or worse than one another or entitled to more or less respect. However many of our own like to give the impression that they are deserving of more respect and at higher level by titling themselves as courtesans, imo. But a title is just that:) As far as what society thinks of us, I don't think anything will ever changes it's perception. That sadly, is set in stone :) For me that is fine as I have always had a some what " I don't give a shit attitude " concerning what others think about me and what I do. I have to live with my choices, have peace of mind with what I do and I do and that is what is important to me, not what someone else thinks. I have and will continue to live my way and those that like it-thank you and those that don't-who cares:)

2 points^^^ Reminds me of Sammy Davis Jr. He was very young at 7 years old, and obviously already know as a little performer, when this movie with Ethel Waters was made Do NOT watch this if you are offended by the portrayal of black people in Hollywood during those years, because it is totally filled with Scarlett Ohara's nanny type characters. However, this is also Ethel Waters, huge at the time, and the 1933 (I think?) movie is about how she dreams of her son becoming president, which of course at the time makes the movie a comedy and tragedy, and prophetic all at the same time. He's probably in his teens here, with his father and uncle in their act.

2 pointsThey advertise several times a week on craigslist under the heading "Full Body Relaxation Massage". The rates are in their ads. The phone number starts with 779. The tip for a HE is halfway between their 30 minute and 45 minute rates.

1 pointYes. Now, that wouldn't prevent me from also condemning him for his actions and requiring that he face the full penalty of the law. I'd kind of like to see happen now. But it does mean that, at the same time, I would understand the circumstances that brought him to that point, and I could see the tragedy in them too. There's another thread that lists the child stars who made it through the experience and came out just fine; and that's brilliant. Some people really can survive early stardom, wealth, power, and the manipulations of opportunists. I don't know why their outcomes are different from others' -- better support network? Simple strength of mind and character? But in Bieber's place, it's clear he's been on top of the world and all the normal impulses to experimentation and edginess from that age are magnified, because there's no shortage of people keen to facilitate his every whim and desire. I think in essence, fame put Bieber into a position that only an extremely strong-willed, well-grounded, well-supported, or simply lucky person could survive unscathed. Looks like he hasn't been that lucky. And so yeah, the tragedy of early wealth and power starts to unfold.

1 pointI agree, OD. Keep in mind the exact same thing goes on in Canada when foreigners and citizens enter into Canada after being away. Evidence they commonly look for in foreigners without work visas is are they coming here to work, they will check over the computer for documents and emails, and probably search history and favourite sites. Phones will be searched as well, so don't bother locking your phone, if you get nervous and can't remember the password, like one guy, they will probably arrest you until or unless they are satisfied. They will phone the contacts in your phone, and/or the person who you say you are going to visit. It is their business to keep criminals, drugs, and illegal workers out of our country, just as it is the US border guards to do the same thing for their country. Just deciding to cross a border means you have agreed to their terms and conditions of entry, and that includes full inspection and search. Having said that, the Canadian border patrol asking a US citizen the purpose of their visit is perfectly OK with the fact the US citizen says they are coming to visit an sp. :) I've been waiting to cross the US border and seen the guard take the phones of two younger females traveling with an older one. I've watched Border Security when the Canadian guards refused entry to an Australian traveler due to the pictures on his phone (showing him engaged in illegal activity, they felt they had reason to believe he was going to engage in illegal activity in Canada).

1 pointCristy, I truly admire your ability to want to see this kid, well really adult, he's 19 now, get help and turn his life around But the key for anyone getting help, he must first want to get help to begin with. But I guess it's true, you need to hit rock bottom before you can get help and turn your life around. Any normal person who gets arrested, cuffs put on him and is booked wouldn't treat it as the highlight of their day. Look at Bieber's mugshot, do you think he sees his arrest as hitting rock bottom and he'll turn his life around or do you think he's enjoying his time at the police station...and sees it as an "opportunity" to develop some sort of persona. And for everyone's viewing pleasure (just kidding) Bieber's mugshot Sorry for the other photo, only pic that would load RG

1 pointThe government requires that all income is declared and that you pay your taxes accordingly. Does that mean everyone declares all of their income? No. There are people who evade paying or claim lesser amounts all across the board. But there seems to be a common assumption that escorts don't pay taxes, when we (the public) don't make that assumption of all other cash-based businesses.

1 pointReally how much chemistry can you get from a smile and a handshake. Chemistry/connection develops over time, not a five minute smile and handshake at a booth at a sex trade show So take a leap of faith and book an encounter with a lady, you just might be surprised at the chemistry that might develop. And if you need to meet a lady before an encounter to see if there is a chemistry see if she is agreeable to meet for a coffee...but compensate her for her time seeing you if she does agree to see you for a coffee Remember, there are no guarantees, just go into an encounter positive and treat the lady like a gentleman and you should do just fine And one more thing, before I entered this lifestyle, I thought when it came to women I had a type, since embarking on this lifestyle what I discovered from meeting a couple (ok more than a couple ;-) ) ladies is that I have more than one type of woman...if that makes sense A rambling RG

1 pointI'm having a hard time reading this. It seems to me that a lot of people have preconceived notions, not about the bar but about the girls. Why is it that whenever strippers are brought up we have to bring up all that is seedy? I didn't think this needed to be said but here it is -- there are girls that genuinely like what they do. Exploitation happens, of course it does. I assume this to be the case for street level ladies more than any other group (and this needs to be addressed). Strip clubs are an entirely different ball game. I worked in clubs for years. Yes, girls had crappy boyfriends - who hasn't? Yes, some did drugs - not as many as you think. I met one girl in all that time that had a serious addiction and was dancing to support it. One. Dancers do not make the money that did 10 years ago. I know people like to think we are bringing in thousands a night. Wishful thinking. I heard all types of stories about gangs making girls work to take their money. I've never heard if it happening because it isn't worth it. If anyone who is actually involved in the industry has other insight I would love to hear it but rumour and heresay does nothing but hurt the industry's reputation and that of the girls that work in it.

1 pointIf you walk into a session with the expectation that achieving an erection is the only indicator of a worthwhile encounter, then you are also putting pressure on yourself -- and combined with the amount of stress you are in with your job, and the effect it has had on your physical health and level of exercise, I wouldn't be surprised if the mister isn't willing to perform. There have already been some useful suggestions made in this thread, but I'm also going to suggest that you re-evaluate what qualifies as "wasting" your money. You may want to contact a provider and explain your situation, and have the encounter focus on sensuality rather than performance. Taking away the pressure of achieving an erection may help. Also, if you're stressed about performance, prescription medication may not help. And finally, it IS possible to achieve an orgasm without an erection!

1 pointThanks everyone, I appreciate the support you've given my article. It's had a surprising amount of staying power, and is continuing to make the rounds on Twitter and FB, even almost a week after it was published. I also published it through HuffPo (as I do with all my sex work blog posts) and it seems to have been shared through that medium as well, which is encouraging. I'm of the mind that our best course of action is to continue muddying the waters on all proposed alternatives (especially the Nordic approach) while continuing to both outline all the reasons why it won't work, and why it would be a step backward instead of a step forward. Most critical at this juncture is the need to overwrite the stereotype with a new narrative - the popularity of the Nordic approach in recent discourse is inherently based on the victimization model that is so prevalent in the discussion. Without that stereotype, the value of the Nordic approach declines significantly, because it's all about "saving" victims of the trade while criminalizing the "violent rapists" (a.k.a. the clients) to "help" us fallen women see the light. We all know it's BS, but the general public remains oblivious, without evidence to the contrary. Many other courageous sex workers have already stepped out into the light, and told their stories, and we've seen some progress in this respect. However, the unspoken side of the transaction remains, and we need client voices more than ever. I realize this is a huge imposition to ask, and an impossibility for many of you; and tell his side of the story, and we will be forever grateful that he chose to do this for us. I can't possibly ask other clients to do the same, but I can facilitate client activism in other ways. I'm very friendly with a handful of writers and columnists in the mainstream media (those who have respected my privacy and have been very discreet when interviewing others in the industry) and I would gladly put you in touch with them if you wanted to anonymously tell your story. We have been so fortunate to have built a community of respectful, pleasant gentlemen who love and admire us because of what we do, not merely in spite of it. So, now we're asking for your help - we would benefit greatly from your contributions in this critical time, and I'm happy to help your voices be heard in a way that protects your privacy. Please PM or email me if you'd like more info, and if we show the country how good the industry can be when it's done right, perhaps we can run out the clock on any new legislation, leave the status quo in place, and improve things for all of us. Let me know if you'd like to help out! :)
