I do ask for a small deposit from someone that I have never seen before. Some people have zero information and are unwilling to give information, my safety comes first in this. If you reschedule then the deposit is used towards another scheduled time. If I cancel then the full deposit is completely refunded to you. I ask you to introduce yourself, give your board handle, etc. How many times do we see, "hey babe, how much for xxx?", "available?", "$", with absolutely nothing else in the text! An example of a text that WILL get answered: "Hi Raven, this is (insert board handle here), I'm looking for an appointment of 2 hours on (insert day), do you have any availability?" This would definitely get a response from me. With so many serial bookers with no intention of showing up I instilled the 'deposit policy' a long time ago. Just imagine you going to work and not being paid just because no one decides to show up? It's the same for us, we make the time to prepare ourselves for you and we cannot just make that time up again with someone else. I do not see people in a 'revolving door' scenario and I'm selective on who I spend my time with. After having several tours in which were completely booked out and then to have zero showings/cancellations/reschedules, it is a complete waste of my time when I could have seen others that wanted to see me.
