You can't knock them for this. It costs A LOT of money to run these sites. We are a little spoiled over here as escorts-canada pays the bills for cerb.ca (Thankfully) but most of the discussion sites rely on advertising revenue and to allow one person to advertise free while another person is paying for the same service... it's not fair so they need to enforce this. If you were drawing business from the site it really is only fair to pay for the advertising and show your support. Sites like CL have made people feel that all advertising online should be free, nothing in this world is free. CL makes money off other parts of the site and USES the adult traffic to boost it's traffic numbers. In the world of online business... traffic equals value. cerb sends an average of 4000 visitors to escorts-canada per day. To put this in perspective... anyone advertising with google adwords for instance knows that it will cost them a MINIMUM of 7 cents per click (Average is over 20 cents per click) paying adwords. (I noticed at one time a few Toronto agencies paying over 1.00 per click just to be at the very top of google adwords). Most of us when we do online advertising try to get ads in the 3-5 cent per click range and that is considered really good advertising prices. What this means is 4000 unique visitors per day is worth about 120.00-200.00 dollars (or 43800.00 to 73000.00 per year) and this is how the budget here at cerb is actually made for the year.... and this is pretty much what it costs to run cerb as I am paid for my time, the servers cost lots of money, bandwidth, updates, software licenses, etc... We have about 20 banners running here a month right now (about 1000.00/mth revenue or 12000.00 a year) the revenue from the banners is not nearly enough to run a site like this. The biggest problem is most sites that run escort advertising or discussions about escorts are considered adult (CL is the exception as it's a classified site with the adult section hidden in the back). Most mainstream advertisers would NEVER consider advertising on a site like this so the revenue most come from somewhere or the site would NOT be able to exist. Anyway... if you make money off a site it is not unreasonable for the site to ask you to support them by paying for advertising. I wish more people would purchase banners here and buy ads on escorts-canada as I would hate to have to format cerb the same way as the other sites (where paying for advertising is mandatory). Eventually it may come to that but for now EC is paying the bills thankfully.

CL is the furthest thing from a credible source once can get! Here we like first hand information (Not rumor or hearsay). If you have some first hand info that you wish to bring to light post it but reading something on CL as fact is foolish... in fact anything you find on CL you should always approach with caution.

Actually the Moderator (Moderator-1) on perb is very nice. I spoke with him and the reason you got suspended Brooke is because you put up a personal profile. I had my card pin stolen as well. II am 99% sure it was at home sense as talking with others that seamed to be the common place we all were at who had this happen. even dynamic (changing) ip's are in the same network (your internet service provider purchases chains and registers them as to where in the world they resolve to in the dns ... they are all geo mapped to country and even city. you can ban entire chains or partial chains like 123.123.123.* would ban 123.123.123.1 right up to 123.123.123.250 (everything in between) 123.* would ban every ip starting with 123. so it's pretty powerful if you have a dynamic ip of 123.123.123.12 and you log off and come back in with a new ip it would be something like 123.123.123.44 (only the last segment usually changes... sometimes the last 2segments but the first two sets would always be the same)

You can actually. Most IP's are geo mapped so you can find out the region/country and ban them. Just locks out all the legit businessmen who travel.

I use a simple raid 1 setup (Mirroring) for the disk that has the database. We use a backup system that backs up incrementally every day and once a week it does a full backup and uploads the backup to a NOC server. ("NOC" stands for network operations center and is a server that is not online but only accessible on the local network) We use a crontab to repair, optimize and then backup the Database fully once a night with a database dump. This backup is gziped then uploaded to the NOC server as well. The NOC server stores backups for a LONG time so we could go back a few months if needed and do a restore from sometime in history. The NOC server also uses raid 1 mirroring just in case. Most malicious "hackers" we see are spammers. They only really have two two goals... 1) Spam. 2) Infect malware/spyware/trojan so you have the hackers who try to take over your server and use it to send 10000's of spam emails. You have the guys who run bots to post SPAM posts on forums like this one (Some get creative and find ways to circumvent the security but really they are wasting time on boards that are moderated well) you have hackers who will infect a server with a script that will add hidden links to all the website pages. When someone views the webpage it will try to redirect them to a site that could infect them with a virus/trojan/spyware/malware/etc... or they upload the script to the computer that infects them directly from the actual hacked server. This usually gets popular when a new web browser exploit is found that allows a hacker to install a script into someone computer without them agreeing to the install. Usually some sore of spyware or malware is most common. Finally we have "script kiddies" these are more of a annoyance usually then anything else but the occasional one sometimes gets lucky with a server or two where the admin has some weak password. Script Kiddies are the amateur hackers (Usually just learning) who run dictionary scripts on passwords. So if you check the server logs you see 100's of attempts from someone just randomly trying passwords. Software like APF/BFD stops these guys and sometimes they cause the server load to increase so it's good to keep them off the servers too. Script kiddies like to do stuff like SYN flood attacks (DOS Attacks) too. In order to do this and not get caught they need to first hack a few servers and use those servers to attack the one the hacker wants SYN/DOS attacked (or a trojan/virus/Worm on enough computers with a time where these unsuspecting computers would all attack a specific server). If they were silly enough to try to DOS/SYN a server using their own computer the ISP they use would quickly terminate the internet service on them and shut them down... a lot of people get virus's and the ISP they use (rogers/Bell/Etc..) detects that they are SYN/DOS attacking someone or sending 1000's of SPAM emails and the ISP closes the account. The account owner often does not realize his/her computer has been infected and is doing all this in the background. They just notice the internet seams slow. So anyone out here with a PC that does NOT have a up to date antivirus... you need to get one as you guys/gals who don't run antivirus and use windows are the biggest cause for our (system administrators) headaches usually. They need to state that they "Are not an escort but a courtesan" if they do this and get a bylaw ticket the judge will throw it out the door! The term "escort" is something they can pretend has nothing to do with prostitution and that lets them license it at this time (and to scare people even more they have silly rules like a LOG to be submitted). This is just another example of the cities ABUSING these bylaws! Worst of all it makes the citizens think that the INCALL location they are going to that has a "Escort" license is a LEGAL BROTHEL but that is NOT the CASE!! If prostitution is going on in a MASSAGE SPA or from a LICENSED ESCORT in a common bawdy house of any kind this is very much ILLEGAL at this time under the criminal code!! If prostitution is decriminalized this means the cities can write bylaws that do outline SEX and Prostitution... can you just imagine how abused those bylaws will be!!! Some of the groups fighting for decriminalization say they will fight any city that draws up bylaws that impede a ladies rights to conduct her business but that will cost A LOT of money (and time) and in the meantime we could see a lot abuse before something is done. Plus why would a prostitution group in BC fight say a bylaw made in Barrie Ontario? Answer: They Won't... they would expect the local organization to do this and in the smaller cities no organizations for this exist. At least Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver have these organizations willing to battle for the ladies... but edmonton, calgary, winnipeg... Barrie, etc.. etc.. It will be abused severely and no one will have the money, time or guts to challenge the bylaws. Bylaws for prostitution need to either be outlined federally of what can and can not be done or the federal government needs to outline the laws in detail and restrict cities to zoning. Some of you may have noticed cerb down again today (That seams to be happening a lot lately) the hard drive on the main database server died and luckily this is a raid drive and the backup drive was fine. The server was offline most of the day as we had to take the server offline completely, put in a new hard drive and mirror the good raid drive back onto a new drive. It took us hours just to figure out what was going on. Anyway I learned some stuff today! Let me know if anyone notices anything missing or behaving wrong.
