Some of you may have noticed that we did a system update tonight. We installed a security patch and updated our templates from 800 pixels wide to 1024 pixels wide. This gives us 224 pixels more on the sides of the forum, we plan to use 120 pixels of this space for small sponsor banners (120x120 or 120x60) in the future (not now) and the remaining 104 pixels would be extra forum space (hopefully to make the site more user friendly and clean) We just want to a moment and make sure everyone can see the site still ok? The site was originally designed for 768 pixels wide (Average screen resolution about 7 years ago) these days with all the wide screens and higher resolution monitors the average is much higher (very few people still run the resolution lower than 1024 so we thought this would be safe). Side scrolling however sucks for forums so before we make this new change permanent we want to hear if any of you are unhappy with the change.

Cyber Stalking Public Service Announcement

I will give you some positive points as I don't agree with the negative ones! I think this is a big problem online. -
IE is bloated compared to firefox so it should run faster on any computer (Noticeably faster) so I suspect your computer may be a little old? Do you have a older P4 (or older?) if so your computer may no longer be able to handle the browser updates as they expect that you keep your system up to date (within a few years). They will always let you upgrade the browser but that does not always mean you should. Give a third browser a try (Google chrome is very un-bloated) safari for PC is not my first choice but also an option. Honestly IE is the worst choice for anyone.

Our client servers have a anti-dictionary script so if the client changes the password they can not use a common dictionary word (popular name/dogs/cat names, etc)... So far it's been very good. A security audit should include john the ripper if you don't have a anti dictionary script.

Ewe!! Switch to firefox. It's so much faster and a lot less chance of picking up a virus/malware/etc.. from a web page. Many of the nasty things specifically target IE. This would not be the site, this is your computer causing this problem. You probably have either (1) a older computer with limited ram or a hard drive that is full or (2) you have some spyware/malware/etc.. nasty stuff and it's bogging down your system. The chat runs on flash so it runs native on your computer (not on our server) so if chat is SLOW for you than it's your computer (not the server here). Download a good spyware remover like search and destroy (SpyBOT) and also check to see if you have lots of ram in your system (especially if it's olders). Also make sure your hard drive is at least 20% free. If your hard drive is full windows will have problems opening and closing windows and will crash a lot as it needs space on the hard drive for temp files and swap files. Yup, cerb has been getting hit a few times a day. We have stopped a few SYNflood attacks and a few DOS attacks. The worst are the scriptkiddies who run dictionary scripts on your root/admin usernames. Really is anyone stupid enough these days to use a dictionary word as a password for a system admin account? They must be or these idiots running the scripts would never bother to do this. We use APF and BFD (and some other tools) to stop this crap. I know, I don't like to see it slow down either... especially with the powerhouse server we upgraded to! If anyone gets the database errors please PM me with the time (and your time zone) and I can cross reference the logs to find out what is causing it. I actually have not got any errors myself so it makes it hard to fix when I can't reproduce the error.

Just some hicups... we are resolving them. I put the chatbox back after some adjustments and it appears to be working more efficiently now.

I just discovered a audit log on the server that I actually didn't know existed (This is a new server as of a few months ago) it has a security audit log and it was FULL. With the aid of this log I should be able to narrow it down. Hang in their, we will get it fast even during peek times.

I have temporarily disables the chatbox and the random album display on the home page (profile albums will still be available to view and the all albums view feature I will leave for now as this is going to be a trial and error issue). I am not sure what is killing the system resources during peek times but for a number of weeks now the cerb server has been experiencing syn flood and dos attacks. We ban the IP's at the firewall when we catch them but they continue to happen with new IP's each time. Syn flood and DOS attacks are causes maliciously, they target a specific server with other powerful servers (sometimes more than one) and just hit it over and over again with requests until the server has too many live connections and starts to slow down and eventually reboot. Some hackers do this to expose exploits (vulnerabilities) in the server so that they can find ways to hack into the server (usually to use it to send spam if they get lucky and actually get in). We will continue to try to resolve these issues.

[ s i g p i c ] [ / s i g p i c ] (Remove all the spaces) A few people have asked me how to get your signature photo to show in your signature. You have to put this [ s i g p i c ] [ / s i g p i c ] where you want the photo to appear in your signature after you upload the image in your UserCP. You must remove the spaces so it looks like {sigpic}{/sigpic} but it needs the square brackets (Not these curly ones I am using for this example). If I was to type it with the square brackets it would put my signature photo in this post.

Prostitution is legal in Canada if you follow the law. Incall locations can be considered common bawdy houses (These would be illegal - such as a massage spa that offers "Sex" or even a stripclub that has "extra's"). Outcall visits with SP's of legal age where all discussion of the services and financial transactions are done in private are legal. If you search harder you will find MANY threads on the topic here. Use the SEARCH feature up top an go read the criminal code of Canada 210-213 (It explains what is not legal in Canada).

Tell people your 45, most people don't admit their real age!

Sorry for the delay in response on this. Tigerclaw brought it to my attention with some excellent idea's. Tigerclaw suggests a permanent "Sticky" thread in the newbie section with "Valuable Information Prior to Visiting a Service Provider" (a general "do's and don'ts"). I agree this is a good idea so I will create a thread in the newbies section called "Valuable Information Prior to Visiting a Service Provider" and anyone who wishes to add to the information can do so.

OOh... yeah you should never do that. Hold your power button for 4 seconds it will shut down for you. You can also try ctrl+alt+f1 when you get the error, and that should allow you to log in via the terminal. If you can get to a terminal prompt type >install vga=771 >reboot Without the > sign of course... I did find a specific video card driver for that laptop http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=1882835 If you can get in using the default video you can than download this driver and install the video driver specific to your toshiba computer. (Toshiba's really are a pain but they are really nice machines - May favorite laptop was a toshiba). Don't give up! Linux is all about learning and you have already come a long way! ;)
-
Toshiba's can be a tough cookie to crack - they are known to use proprietary hardware specific to toshiba's (such as motherboard drivers) but your video card being a nvida should not be the problem. I have had problems in the past with intel video cards With the intel cards I go into the terminal and type install vga=771 that usually solves the video card issues but this being a nvida card I would think it probably has something to do with the motherboard drivers. Also, are you installing the correct version for your system? (Make sure your not installing a 64 bit system into a system that should be 32 bit... I would suspect this would stop your install). What model is your toshiba laptop? A quick search on google may find some specific problems and work arounds. Can you run UBUNTU if you boot from the disk (I think you hit F12 when you turn on your computer on a toshiba to boot from CD). The UBUNTU disk should boot linux right from the CD (Without the need to install) - this is a good way to check if the full install will work or not.
-
Wubi is a great suggestion, I have used that before and it worked great. Makes it VERY easy to install ubuntu.
-
That would be a virtualBOX thing and not the actual ubuntu install. I think the virtual box uses some kind of windows based video driver, I don't think it actually uses the default driver installing into your ubuntu virtual OS... but I am not that well versed yet with virtualbox so mabey someone else would have the answer to this.

MOD: would you please consider adding these smilies
mod replied to capitalman's topic in Tech corner
You can add them to your posts the same way you added them here. -
They are all versions on LINUX anita. Fedora is RedHat (Cerb actually runs on Fedora) they make great servers. Many distributions exist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_distributions) Honestly UBUNTU is the most commercial and easy to use I find for the home user. It works on most PC's right from install. Video cards, wireless cards and some other specialy cards are not always easy to get working - some do not work at all as they are only made for windows (Like a MAC - you can not install all PCI cards into a mac and have them work - they must have drivers for the MAC os). Try ubuntu and using a terminal window (you will find that in the main menu) just install the nvidia driver. If it does not work you may have a nvida card that does not have linux drivers yet (but I am not aware of any that do not work).
-
Try opening a terminal and installing the nvida drivers from terminal (If this does not work tell me what nvida card you are using Gforce FX 9000? (or something like that??) sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new (let it download the application) sudo nvidia-glx-config enable (This will enable it) reboot (This will reboot unbuntu so it can take effect) sudo nvidia-settings (This will let you configure the settings for resolution)

I like to use domainsatcost as the control panel is really nice. I have an affiliate program with twocows as well but the domain manager for the openSRS system is kind of crappy. I have also used godaddy without any problems. I STAY AWAY FROM NETWORK SOLUTIONS!
