On this day, 100 years ago, the slippery slope to a classic story begins. The Titanic left Southhampton to begin it's date with destiny. Construction of Hull # 401 (Titanic) started on March 31 1909 in Belfast. Constructed by Harland and Wolff, the ship took almost 3yrs to build. The level of craftsmanship for the Olympic class ships was unbelievably beyond the standard of the day. Titanic, along with her sister, Olympic, was the crowning achievement of luxury for the White Star line. That was White Star line's calling card. The Olympic & Titanic were not the fastest ships of the time but they were the height of luxury passage. The original H&W slipways and fitting dock are still visible through Google Maps. The Titanic departed Belfast for South Hampton at 8:00 pm on April 2, 1912. Several challenges lay ahead for equipping the ship for the cross Atlantic journey. Staffing, supplying & training for a ship of this size was a new experience for everyone. The Captain (Edward John Smith), who, despite his years with White Star, had absolutely no experience with the technology. His officers were similarly unequipped. Nobody had any experience with this monster. A national coal miners strike meant there was a shortage of coal for the epic maiden voyage. IMM (International Mercantile Marine Co) grabbed coal from the Olympic and filled Titanic's holds. IMM, an American conglomerate, owned White Star. The Titanic was, effectively, an American ship - not British. Finally stocked for the journey, Titanic pushed-off from Southhampton at 12pm GMT April 10 1912 and arrived Cherbourg, France at 6:30pm. While departing from the Southhampton dock, she almost collided with another smaller vessel; the New York. The Titanic passed by the New York and the draft of the Titanic drew the New York away from its dock. Some quick action narrowly avoided a collision. Ironically, New York was to be Titanic's port of call...one which she never made. More to come...

I'd like to propose a thread for those who have followed the story of the Titanic. This coming week will mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the ship and the scandalous loss of life. I've been a Titanic follower and hobbyist for a long time and have tried to discover historic value of this event. For some reason, the Titanic has meaning for me, and I hope with your indulgence, to post factoids along the way. Anyone else a fan?

I was entertaining myself this afternoon with a little housework. If you really want to know, I was cleaning behind the stove. Next to cleaning the toilet, the "behind the stove" thing has got to be the most unrewarding task in the universe. Soooo, here I am with my head stuck behind the stove and I'm thinking - hell, I should do this in the nude! I tend to get creative when I'm bored....I should get paid to do this for other people. Yeah, that's the ticket!....I've seen ads on CL that for nude painters, why can't I do the same thing? I can advertise this online. Nahhh, who am I kidding?....how many of you ladies would pay to have a naked guy romping around cleaning your house? wiggle, wiggle, wiggle...

I tried going bald when I was younger. For me, it was the worst experience imaginable. The itching was incredible & incessant. I was squirming even when I walked...worse if I had to sit for any length of time. It must have been pretty damn amusing to see me walking like I had to take a wicked piss. I swore I would never clip the weeds again. I'm pretty particular about my hygiene, so I don't have any issues keeping a growth.

I hear there are organized tours for RC enthusiasts. They charter a bus or airplane and visit a selection of rides. That ride in Vegas at the top of that hotel - creeps me out just thinking about it. Palms are getting all sweaty.:shock:....have to go lie down.

It was at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition - Toronto) when I was about 7 years old. Sometime in the early 60s. I begged my dad to take me on the roller coaster. The name of the RC was: "The Flyer". I marveled at the swooping and screaming coming from the cars. I wanted to share the experience and thrills. I wanted it sooo bad. "Dad, Dad..can we go on the roller coaster, can we, can we???? huuhhhh?? puuulleeeeez??!!!". Typical 7 yr old crap. "Ok, ok ok fergoodnessake", he said (or something like that). "Ok, let's go do it." "Yay", I said to myself. "At last, I get to go on the roller coaster". It was a Woody. Probably designed and built sometime in the 30's. They just slapped a new coat of paint on it every couple of years to pass the safety inspection. Obviously, they had fewer safety restrictions back in those days - I was barely 4ft tall. But, what the hell. So, Dad & I get into the lead car. "Oh, this is going to be sooo cool!" I think to myself. The ride starts. We get going, and start to climb the first hill. Reality starts to set-in. "Hey, waitasecond - this hill is really frigging HIGH!". And, we're still climbing. We're up, like, a million feet in the air. I can see all of Toronto from this height. But, the pleasant scenery is about to change. We reach the top. I'm looking down from the top and the car slows down just for laughs and to build a little extra suspense. Holy crap - I can't believe they do this kind of crap to little kids!! OMFG, we're going down and we're gonna be killed - I'm gonna fly out of this thing HOLY SHHHHIIIII***! My dad is laughing his balls off all the way down just looking at the terror in my face. It was a combination of dad's laughter and my silent screams: "HOLY SHIII TT -HA HA HA HA HA, SHIIII -HA HA HA HA HA, FUUUUCCCC HH AHAHHHAAAAAA!!!" The longer I screamed, the louder my Fuc*ing dad laughed (the insensitive bastar*). This ride was back in the days when they really gave you some of your money's worth too. More than just a couple of flings around the track. Never been on another Roller Coaster since. I'm such a pussy. They have some really insane rides now. Anyone a fan?

RG has a good handle on the viciousness of TP. It attacks without warning like a swarming. But the nice stuff is the tattered ends as they blow in the wind. They signal a final silence of battle done - think of "Taps". The plaintiff notes are credence to finality and quietude.

I'm more of a believer in function .vs. form... So, if the TP is over the roll, it is a little too close to grab. I have to scrunch up my little hand to grab a handful. If the TP is on the underside, then I have a much more comfortable time (and a lot more fun) reeling off the sheets. I can also count the individual sheets much better - good for those bean counters. I think we should poll the Royals to see their preferred style. I think Harry uses a Lufa. Pretty dang rough but thorough & re-usable.

Sorry folks, but I'm confused. What does honesty have to do with a discussion about toilet paper?...but, just to go with the flow, I honestly enjoy a good soft paper product. Maybe I'll step up to try the Charmin.

Does anyone remember the commercial TP dispensers that gave you one folded sheet at a time? The paper was really hard & difficult to use. Plus, you had to use a whole bunch of them to get adequate coverage. If the dispenser was getting close to empty, the sheets wouldn't dispense easily and you had to dig inside the dispenser to get the TP. Sometimes, the TP would just drop out of the dispenser onto the floor. Almost as bad as those cubicles that made you pay a dime or quarter just to get into the cubicle. Talk about inhumanity.

Are they true blood twins (actually identical)?

Does anyone have or know of anyone who operates a Dungeon here in Ottawa? I know Keiko on EC has something going on, but I'm not sure if she also provides SP services during a dungeon session. As an aside, what equipment should a well-equipped dungeon have?

Oy, if I had a nickel for every annoying event in life, I would...well, I'd have a crap load of nickels. Everyday life brings individual challenges. Mine always seem to occur early morning...namely, when I'm sitting on the john. And it always seems to involve bathroom paper. The roles I get are the 2-ply econo packs from Costco. The double role is great, but getting them started is a royal PAIN in the toes. The TP manufacturer leaves a little slip of paper to grip to get things going. But the glue, or the pressure strip they use to keep everything from unraveling is just too strong. So, I tenderly grasp the lead paper and begin to tear in the hopes things will go well. This morning, it did not go well. I spent a good 10 minutes frigging with the toilet paper role. Just sitting there got me thinking that I could be doing so many other useful things. I could get a 2nd cup of coffee; or get some breakfast; or feed the dog; just anything but sitting in this god foresaken lonely bathroom frigging with the stupidest thing in the world - a toilet paper role is controlling my life! Got the TP role started (or so I believed)...only to discover, I only got one ply to unravel. The 2nd ply was separated, therefore leaving a substantially inadequate 1 ply TP section in my dumb-ass hands. Totally unacceptable. You know what happens when you use 1 ply toilet paper. It's not a happy experience. In frustration, I unraveled a good 25 feet of paper before the 2 plys bonded and I was left with something useful. Great, now I discovered I installed the roll on the spindle incorrectly. Believe it or not, there is a correct way to install a toilet paper role. The correct way of course is to have the roll unravel from the bottom. Gravity helps feed the paper downward. To those who prefer to have their TP unravel from the top - I have the sad duty to inform you that you are silly. Now liberated from the bathroom, I had only to worry about loading the dishwasher...the correct way. Do you think I worry too much?

I'm with Kubrick - we need opposing views. But, I personally think I can agree to disagree on this particular discussion. Cerb represents and, I think, encourages a diversity of opinions. If you find that your point of view is not well received or is in the minority, I think that is an opportunity to either challenge your own opinion or to respectfully invite further discussion. Oh, good lord this is just plain icky. With all due respect to the OP for expressing outrage and encouraging intelligent discourse, I'm getting creeped-out. I couldn't bring myself to watch the ctv vid. At the risk of appearing to stick my head in the sand, I don't think this thread has a place here on Cerb. I'm normally not one for censorship, but really folks ...this? Personally, I think the poster questioning the outrage is just baiting y'all. My $0.02 worth.
