There's software that will allow you to run Windows, but it takes a performance hit. Your best bet is to stick with what you're familiar with. Besides, you will pay much more for a Mac than a PC...with your price range, you should be able to get a great PC that does everything you want very well. The cheapest iMac is like $1300.

What kind of programs are you referring to? Can't say I have ever come across this, Flash is about the only thing that I see out there and that's about as standard as they come.

Most computers are smoking fast now and it really is easier to just pick something from Future Shop or Best Buy and run with it. Just make sure you tell them to shove any extra warranty packages up their ass. If you have a computer that's 5+ years old, you'll be floored with the performance boost. You don't have to go crazy and get the most powerful system out there...you do have some power user needs, but unless you want to be a cutting edge gamer or do serious video/3D graphic rendering, anything you get in that price range will be more than satisfactory. You might even want to take a look at a refurbished unit where you'll get a better value and there's absolutley nothing to worry about as far as quality goes.

Yeah, I found most of the more current information on another blog that seemed dedicated on taking TER down, but didn't want to post a link since it was outing people on that site. The blog also had a huge beef with the right wing faction down south. Thanks for posting that Lana, very interesting. However, the article was almost 2 years old, so I did a bit of searching to find some more recent info. It appears that Elms will be going to jail for a very long time as he went on the lam for 2 months before getting caught, and was also charged with conspiracy to commit assault amongst other charges. He plead guilty and was to be sentenced last week, but I couldn't find out for how long. TER is still up and running under new management. Hopefully they are not taking a pimp-like approach as well.
