There is a whole under ground on that, it's called "e whoring" It is a scam to get you to sign up to the site, and they make money off you. Chances are, if you do sign up and its not the person you think you are talking to, if you add them to your messengers. Quite often, it's webmasters and people that get paid per click or a revenue share.

Oh, once in a while I do ;-) Its usually a fond rememberance and the times we had that gets me excited if he's calling again
