Wow, very inspiring sequence Cat, but the truly stirring part of this for me was the fact that he shared his poetry. Much like T'Storm I have written poetry of different types (went through a weird Haiku phase years ago) from time to time as well as short stories but have shared them with very few. Usually personal pieces like that are hard to share as they mean so much to the individual writing it and we are usually our worst critics (by far). It is amazing that he felt so strongly about meeting you to share this and I am sure it led to the encounter being that much more special for the two of you. Thanks for sharing this!

Honestly Meg You should never feel bad if you don't want to discuss certain things. It is all about comfort and respect, if you do not feel comfortable with where a conversation is leading follow your gut feeling and stick to it. People in an office setting won't ask personal details about someones income or what their personal life is all about until they know each other incredibly well...this industry is even more secretive, simply to protect ourselves and everyone should understand limits and take polite distractions to heart as a signal to back off. It goes both ways, I am sure most of us hobbyists don't immediately jump in with I work at X and Live with Y and like to Z right away. Again it is about that comfort level and respect you can build up and ensuring you get a good feeling about the other person. If you never want to reveal personal facts, you never should. There are some I have shared some of my personal life with and others that I just haven't felt it was quite right to. As far as distractions go things like 'let's not ruin the mystery', 'what do you think' or simply we don't want to spoil the mood' would be good ideas. At the end of the day you have as much or more to lose then the person asking the questions and you need to protect yourself especially if they are being too pushy, some times it may be time to just be direct, but in a nice way.:wink: Good luck, you seem to have a great personality and that is probably why people are very conversational, but limits are limits!

I am mostly with Erin, I have great memories of Hitchhikers (especially the text games) but could never get into his other stuff. As far as classic sci-fi writers go give me Heinlin or Philip K. Dick anyday. As far as modern scifi I am a huge David Weber fan (Honor Harrington). Yeah Thomas Covenent was a serious SOB as a character...I find Donaldson to be hit or miss, I may try the Gap Cycle as I love some depressing futuristic fiction. C.J. Cheryh is a great scifi novelist as well (and really prolific), focuses a lot on the human psychology aspect of the scenarios...

I will not deny or admit that I own Johnny Mnemonic as well (no Sally Shears in the movie...WTF?)! I have been a Gibson fan from waaaaay back....He runs a really great blog that he forces himself to ignore when writing (otherwise he blogs and doesn't write). Great concept Mandalay..can't wait to see the finished product! You should even consider creating a blog to chronicle the development of the doc to generate even more pre-buzz for the finished product....many filmmakers do this when working on projects.

This may sound weird but a regular to me is someone that I know I plan to see consistently and often think of fondly when I am not. I am not able to see people every single week and many of the people I admire and hold dear are not from Ottawa. To me the EP's I truly connect with and stay in touch with are who I would call...well I don't like the word regular, let's call them favored companions? There are a few people that I would drop nearly everything for to see when their and my schedules match, they are people I admire, respect and desire, they are truly my favored companions.

I haven't really done traditional gifts too much, but since I favor morning encounters I tend to always bring a sampling of snacks and beverages. Whether it be their favorite coffee beverage and fresh cut fruit, a mixture of chocolates and truffles or sparkling water and montreal style bagels (or in some cases cookies ;)). I love food and I also tend to meet and re-visit people I genuinely enjoy spending time with in many ways, so having these simple but tasty meals to enjoy together gives us time to chat for a bit. Now sometimes the meals are eaten after an hour or two, it all depends on how much we were looking forward to seeing each other!:twisted: Gifts are tricky though, I would love to buy some of my favorite people some toys as that is the gift that keeps on giving, just need to find out what they need/want!
