I totally understand what you're saying about personal responsibility and accoutnability. But if it was your child, would you still be satisfied with a three year sentence? And there is another thing to consider about this verdict; I think we can all admit that it's pretty light considering a human life was wasted. After all, you can get more for this by cheating on your taxes. It isn't exactly the kind of verdict that will deter people from doing this in the future. It will be very interesting to se how an organization like MADD responds.

I may not be make myself popular with this, but I've always supported strong penalties for drunk driving. The only reason that young man died was becuase Tobin was driving drunk. It's no different than if he had pointed a gun at him and pulled the trigger. Thinking from the family's point of view, how will they feel in five years looking at their son or brother's empty spot at the table during Christmas dinner knowing that the person responsible for his death is enjoying Christmas with his own family? I don't support the death penalty, but if you take a life, you should surrender your freedom for the rest of your's. It won't bring back the victim, but it offers the best form of balance we can. I'm not neccessarily saying he should go away for life, but three years? Can anyone here say that if they had lost a son or brother or anyone else and the person who killed them received a few years in prison, you wouldn't be furious? And we also have to ask oursleves this, if Tobin had been a young black or muslim man, without a good (or politically connected family) behind him, would have recieved an equally light sentence?

The impending ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!

You'd probably want to get out of the city too. Where would you find the most zombies? And most of our infrastructure would collapse in a matter of a few weeks or even days without constan human attention. Fewer threats, possibly more fodd, cleaner water out in the country. -

Happy Birthday! Hope it was a good one! -
We could hide on Parliament Hill while Parliament is sitting. The last place any self respecting zombie would look for functioning brains is Parliament.

Thoughts with his friends and family. Rest in Peace. -
No matter what you thought of his politics, this is tragic. Truly unfair that he passes away only a few months after leading his party to historic success. Condolences to his friends and family.

Movies That Can Only Be Watched Once
Lowdark replied to roamingguy's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
2004's King Kong. Not a bad movie per se but emotionally exhausting. Gone Baby Gone. A solid movie but it kills a little more faith in humanity every time you watch it. -
For me, I can watch the following over and over again without complaint (and often have). The first Ghostbusters Green Mile Galaxy Quest (yeah, yeah, I know . . .) Mystery Alaska Wall-E Kingsom of Heaven Batman Begins Dogma And Christmas Vacation at Christmas (along with Alister Sims' a Christmas Carol and It's a Wonderful Life)

Movies that SHOULD NEVER be remade.
Lowdark replied to Old Dog's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
Having read (and loved) the book, I actually can't stand the It mini series. A remake into a movie is probably a mistake as well (cramming an 1100 page book into 2 hours?) and I'm kind of glad plans to adapt the entire Dark Tower series into a combination of movies and mini series fell through. It's ironic you mentioned Kevin Smith movies becuase as soon as I posted on this thread last night I popped in Mallrats for a couple of laughs. A classic that should never be remade (although NBC did it as a mini-series in the 90's) is the original Inherit the Wind. Brilliant movie making with an ensemble cast (for the time) headed by Spencer Tracey. A pure gem. -

They're remaking the Crow, a cult classic for a number of reasons and I doubt the remake get a fair chance by many. Same with the mad max remakes/prequels. A few others that shouldn't be touched. Slapshot Reservoir Dogs Last of the Mohicans A recent one that never should have seen the light of the theatre; Skyline. Ugh. -
Thanks guys I had a blast

What The Heck is going on in the UK

Three men who were trying to protect their neighbourhood lost their lives because of this. There are plenty of social undercurrents at work here; high unemployment, poverty, distrust of the police by some communities and a negligent police presence (if there had been 16000 officers in full riot gear on Monday, most of the rioters wouldn't have left their homes). But in the end, these riots will only hurt those who are rioting. There will be no jobs for them after this, no brighter futures beyond their temporary satisfaction and judging by the police's aggressive posture many will have criminal records complicating their lives. Some are going to sacrifice some freedom so if having too much free time on their hands was a problem, it won't be for a few years. Politicians will have now have an excuse to crack down on civil liberties if they decide to. There's already talk of the British police reforming their tactics (despite their recent problems, British police have long refused to use common North American weapons like water cannons and tear gas-those days are probably gone). Community trust will be lost becuse the rioters are destroying their own neighbourhoods, assualting their own neighbours. But I truly despise people excusing their own violent behaviour by using their economic standing. It's an insult to people who are enduring tough times who choose not steal and murder. Do things need to change? Absolutely. But these cowards need to crack a book and read about people like Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mother Theresa, people who changed the world for the better and never raised a fist or shed blood to do it. -
Gender Equality and the Economics of Sex

I would be interested to read the entire study. I agree with Samantha that it seems that some questions seemed neglected, particularly the point about a women's rights and sexuality being restrained by religous and social elements in theocratic countries, but perhaps they may hve been addressed somewhere else in the study. In the west, a woman's sexuality has always been her best leverage because for centuries (hell, millenia) that was the only leverage she was allowed by law and by custom (and there have been many attempts in western history-and even the present day-to take that away).
