  2. A West Philadelphia man - acquitted of murder but convicted on gun charges in the 2009 shooting of a pimp who interrupted him with a prostitute - was sentenced to five years probation this morning by a Philadelphia judge. Kalif Lewis, 28, apologized to the family of Tyre West, 28, who was shot and killed in the Dec. 17, 2009 confrontation at a room in the airport Residence Inn in South Philadelphia. Lewis also apologized to his family and the judge for having to go through the trouble of a trial, which ended Aug. 8 in the jury's verdict. Lewis spent 20 months in jail awaiting trial; Common Pleas Court Judge M. Teresa Sarmina granted him $10,000 bail after the jury's verdict. Defense attorney Gerald Stein said afterward that the sentence was in line with state sentencing guidelines. Lewis' .40-caliber handgun was legally owned and registered but he did not have a permit to carry the weapon. Because he had no criminal record, Stein said, the two weapons counts are graded as misdemeanors. According to trial testimony, Lewis, who is married, called prostitute/dominatrix Shanet Foust after seeing her ad on Craigslist for a "$99 special" and set up the appointment. After sex, Lewis left the room but then returned in what Assistant District Attorney Richard Sax alleged was a plan to rob Foust. Foust, 28, called West, her pimp and husband, on her cellphone and he came to the room with a gun, confronted Lewis and fired at him. Stein argued that Lewis returned to the room after he discovered that he was missing a $100 bill and wanted it back. When West burst into the room, Stein argued, Lewis fired back in self-defense. "I was like a deer in headlights," Lewis testified at trial. "I was scared. That's when he fired." West fell dead outside the door of the hotel room. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/20110927_John_gets_probation_in_pimp_shooting.html

  4. Once a year at Christmas is when I donate. A couple toy purchases for the toy mountain and a donation to the Ottawa Mission. Small donations around the year are articles I no longer want or need I donate to the Salvation Army. The odd time I will put some canned soup or whatnot in the donation bin at the grocery store. These are not significant donations by any means.

  7. VINELAND â?? A sex trafficker from Vineland who last year admitted to running a prostitution ring involving both minors and adults in Atlantic City was sentenced Friday to 188 months in federal prison. Javon Gordon, 29, who used the alias â??Teflon,â? pleaded guilty in August 2010 to two counts of transporting minors across state lines to work as prostitutes for him. Each count of carried a maximum penalty of life in prison. The mandatory minimum penalty is 10 years. He will serve 15 years and eight months in prison. In addition, U.S. District Judge Robert Kugler sentenced Gordon to a lifetime of supervision upon release. He is also required to register as a sex offender. According to the United States Attorneyâ??s Office, Gordon admitted that from September 2007 until July 2008, he ran a prostitution ring in and around Atlantic City, acting as a pimp and employing both juvenile girls and adult women to work for him as prostitutes. He admitted to controlling the activities of the women and girls working for him, including requiring them to give him any money they made from performing sexual acts on customers. Three girls recruited by Gordon solicited prostitution clients on the streets and in various casinos in Atlantic City, as well as on the Internet. Gordon used a digital camera to take naked, partially-naked and sexually-suggestive pictures of the girls, then posted the images on various websites, including Craigslist, in an effort to advertise prostitution services. Gordon also used Craigslist to assist in his efforts to recruit girls to work for him as prostitutes. He also admitted to traveling from the Atlantic City area to Philadelphia in order to transport a girl back to Atlantic City to work as a prostitute. In addition, Gordon admitted to transporting an adult female and a girl between the Boston and Atlantic City areas to work as prostitutes. Gordon was arraigned on Oct. 20, 2009, for charges of operating a child exploitation enterprise that engaged in sex trafficking of children, sexual exploitation of children, distribution of child pornography, transportation of minors to engage in prostitution, aggravated assault and kidnapping. According to the indictment, Gordon organized and managed a prostitution ring that operated in Atlantic City and other U.S. cities including Washington, D.C., and Boston. 8. TORONTO - Toronto has some of the "most intellectual" strippers in Canada. On any given night, about 50% of the city's exotic dancers on the job are fresh-faced college or university students who are shedding their clothes to earn degrees, industry officials say. A ban on imported foreign dancers in 2006 forced Toronto-area strip club owners to recruit elsewhere, and they now have hundreds of students from top colleges and universities taking to the stage after classes to earn tuition money. "We have one of the most intellectual workforces in all of Canada," Tim Lambrinos of the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada said. "Almost half of our dancers at some clubs are students." Lambrinos said the students are recruited through word-of-mouth and make good dancers. "They are professional, know what they want and are good workers. Some are very intellectual and want to know every aspect of the law." Lambrinos said about 500 of the 1,500 registered dancers are students from Toronto, Ryerson and York universities, and Humber, Centennial and Seneca colleges. He said they represent about 50% of the 700-dancer workforce on any given night in Toronto. Club officials said students can get a flat rate of $75 for a seven-hour shift, plus money earned in tips and table dancing. Lambrinos said most of the students dance for about three years until they graduate. "We were very surprised by the amount of students who work in clubs," he said. "These girls are very intelligent and they want to better themselves." One downtown club owner said more than 50% of his dancers are students. "We have had girls who are studying to be doctors and lawyers," the longtime owner said on the condition his name not be used. "They work very hard and are here on time." He said one former dancer was given a scholarship to prestigious Harvard University in the U.S. One dancer, who goes by the name of Nicole, said she stripped for four years while studying business administration at York University. "It was very hard but I managed to do it and I am very proud," Nicole said. "I came from a poor family and dancing gave me an opportunity." The single mom is now training to become the general manager of a club. The Adult Entertainment Association, which represents 53 of the 140 strips clubs in Ontario, has been calling for more dancers ever since former immigration minister Judy Sgro resigned after extending the visa of a Romanian exotic dancer who had worked on her election campaign. Until then, foreign strippers had their visas fast-tracked to Canada. In 2004, foreign strippers got 423 work permits and extensions. By 2006, the number was down to 17. 9. A church in Arizona, called the Phoenix Goddess Temple, has been accused of being a house of prostitution. STORY HIGHLIGHTS The Phoenix Goddess Temple advocates "neo tantric" healing therapies, police say But "practitioners" at the temple allegedly gave sex for "donations," police say 20 women and men have been arrested, and 17 more people are sought (CNN) -- A church called the Phoenix Goddess Temple has been accused of being a house of prostitution, and a six-month undercover investigation has resulted in the arrests of 20 women and men who worked there, Phoenix police said Friday. Authorities are still searching for 17 more people -- all of whom have been indicted -- in connection with the prostitution enterprise, said Sgt. Steve Martos, a Phoenix police spokesman. The 20 people arrested so far have been charged with prostitution or other offenses, police said. During a Wednesday search of the Phoenix temple and two church-related sites in nearby Sedona, police seized evidence showing that "male and female 'practitioners' working at the Temple were performing sexual acts in exchange for monetary 'donations,' all on the pretense of providing 'neo tantric' healing therapies," Phoenix police said. The alleged brothel generated tens of thousands of dollars a month, Martos told CNN. A history of neighbor complaints, a recent Phoenix newspaper article, and the temple's website were among the factors prompting authorities to conduct the undercover investigation, Martos said. "What's unusual is that they were trying to hide behind religion or church, and under the guise of religious freedom, they were committing acts of prostitution," Martos said. "We certainly respect First Amendment rights. However, religious freedom does not allow for criminal acts," Martos said. Regarding the Goddess Temple's website, he said: "What they would talk about would seem to be religion. At the same time, they were implying or intimating that they were giving sex therapy." The website says at one point: "Sex is a holy, sacred and divine healing force at the core (of) our beings. Once we embrace this force instead of deny it, we become successful, happy and powerful manifestors." The website also features unclothed women, listed as residing in several states, under a "Goddesses" section. The investigation focused on the alleged crimes, said acting Phoenix Police Chief Joe Yahner. Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery added in a statement: "Freedom of religion does not allow individuals to trade sex for money, no matter how the transaction is portrayed." The alleged madam, Tracy Elise, who is in her 50s, was arrested and charged with prostitution, illegal control of an enterprise, pandering, and operating a house of prostitution, police said. Elise was allegedly involved in a similar suspected brothel in Seattle, Washington, which authorities shut down in 2009, Phoenix police said. Elise or her attorney could not be immediately reached for comment. Others named in the indictment face charges including conspiracy, working in a house of prostitution, and massaging without a license. A total of 33 people have been indicted, but during Wednesday's search of the Phoenix temple, police arrested four more people not named in the indictment, Martos said. Four of the 20 people arrested are men, and two of the four are alleged prostitutes, Martos said. The other two men are a website operator and a school director-teacher at the temple, he said. The other people arrested are women, he added. The church is near downtown Phoenix, and the temple also had an office and a house in Sedona, both of which investigators also searched with warrants and where police made three of the arrests, Martos said. The temple practitioners probably used the Sedona house for rest and sleep, Martos said. http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/09/09/arizona.church.prostitution/index.html?hpt=hp_t2
