Public Transit - Essential Service?
AndyofHalifax replied to drlove's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
It seems to me that when people have a bad experience with a union, their perspective becomes that all organized labour is the corrupt/antiquated, etc. Why then do people not feel the same way about corporations? I'm sure we've all had dozens of terrible experiences with different companies, both as consumers and employees, but I don't hear many people say that the time of the corporation has passed and we should embrace communism. If the right to strike is taken away, or if the government forces workers back to work, then the employer has no incentive to bargain in good faith. Arbitrators can be very useful when negotiations have truly stalled, but it can be very hard for a arbitrator to truly understand what is most important to either side, as they cannot fully understand the complexities of the organization while being outside of it. The parties should have a chance to work through the issues by themselves and work stoppages are a necessary part of that system. In the case of the Halifax Transit workers, you may be interested to know that the issues on the table are not in regards to wages at all. The issues are about preventing the employer from contracting out their jobs, and keeping all of their employees at full time hours. In my opinion, those are fairly noble causes and are certainly worth the strike for the members who would lose their jobs or have their hours cut otherwise. I also use public transit regularly and would be severely impacted by this work stoppage, however I support their right to do so. Just because I use a service does not mean I am entitled to it. If the Halifax Transit Workers had no union, and the city did contract out their services, there would be no guarantee of services either. The company who receives the contract could go out of business or stop running less profitable routes, etc. As for striking being a joke, it is only considered after holding a vote of all the members and using the majority decision, much like any democracy. So how is that unfair to the workers? As in any democracy, some people are going to be upset, but when you are acting on behalf of the majority, you are acting in the interests of the group as a whole. -
I suspect this will be the only time I post Bruno Mars in this thread. However, it is catchy, and it's about *ahem* lyin' around all day. Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song

If it's ok with everyone here, I'm going to ignore the fishing theme as I suspect that is a shallow pool of songs, so to speak. Instead, I'll run with the rap parody theme. The best crossover would be Lonely Island's I'm on a Boat but I'm going to go with Flight of the Conchords instead. Flight of the Conchords - Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros

I went for a jog today for the first time in ages and didn't severely injure myself. I'll put that in the positive column for now.

I like Old Dog for many reasons, but today's reason is his encyclopedic knowledge of music. Even if it is sometimes Wikiclycopedic knowledge :D

RoamingGuy - The newest Double God

Congrats Roamingguy! Very well deserved and well done! -
As far as I know, Eydie Gormé and Mel Tormé don't have anything to do with each other (although I'm sure Old Dog could tell me otherwise :D) but their last names rhyme. Met Tormé - I'm Coming Home

Mighty Quinn was originally penned by Bob Dylan and recorded in the basement of "Big Pink" in Woodstock with The Band. The Band's last concert was called The Last Waltz and featured a number of great musicians.... and Neil Diamond, who Robbie Robertson forced into the lineup because he produced some of Diamond's albums. Diamond didn't really fit with the rest of the performers, however, he still had an unhealthy amount of irrational confidence. After performing his song, he came off stage and "...When Diamond came off stage he remarked to Dylan, "You'll have to be pretty good to follow me", to which Dylan responded, "What do I have to do, go on stage and fall asleep?" This was the song Neil Diamond - Dry Your Eyes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM-MBECuBoc

You've really stepped up the connections, OD! So here's my attempt to keep pace Dave Navarro was the lead guitarist in the original incarnation of Jane's Addiction. After Jane's Addiction broke up and Izzy Stradlin left Guns 'N Roses, Navarro was Axl Rose's first choice to join the band. However, despite multiple attempts, GNR couldn't get Navarro to show up and play with Slash. However, Axl eventually convinced him to join them to record this song for the End of Days soundtrack Guns 'N Roses - Oh My God

I had a lot of time to cook today and made some homemade bread, chili and topped it off with a nice upside down cake, all from scratch. Always nice to have a good album on while you are working away in the kitchen, creating delightful aromas and tastes. There's something very zen about it for me.

Well, AC/DC is, at least on the surface, stands for alternating and direct current electricity. Iggy Pop and the Stooges had a pretty great album about power too. I couldn't pick just one song, so here is the whole album The Stooges - Raw Power http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8j6P5xH25k

It would seem that there are lots of reasons to celebrate Old Dog lately! He just surpassed the 4000 post plateau. Get your congratulations in quickly; I suspect he'll get to 5000 soon as there is hardly any paws between his posts! His posts certainly give me a new leash on life, although it must be ruff for him being on here all the time, but I suppose he just wants to be herd. So, not to hound you, but what are you waiting for? Schnauzer chance to tell Old Dog how he's such a good boy.

Even better than a mere image, next time you are in Halifax, Penelope, take a walk down Argyle Street and look at the windows of St. Paul's Church. One of the window panes has the silhouette of a man's head The story is here http://enicolson.hubpages.com/hub/Ghosts-of-the-Halifax-Explosion-1917

Huh, I did not know that. On the topic of alt-rock wheels, however... Wilco - I'm a Wheel And a better song from that same album Wilco - Handshake Drugs

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mHe6FMs46o The link is that RG's post was the 666th reply in this thread! I couldn't let the occasion go by without marking it with some devil music.
