On another thread there was some discussion between Mod and another member on the risk of condom failure. More specifically was it safer or riskier to change condoms within one round of action (one release)? The member had believed safer but Mod argued otherwise. He reasoned if the typical failure rate is 2% per condom use and you use one per 10mins in a one-hour session, the failure of at least one of six condoms would rise up to 12%. Along this reasoning, the rate would be 11% (it is 1 minus .98 to the power of 6). The conclusion seemed to be: more the riskier. But the math is not simple as that. To simplify things, I'll consider a session of two acts: CBJ and FS with two scenarios: one changes condom between acts and the other doesn't..The risk of each scenario then depends on how condoms failure.. If it is only 2 of 100 condoms are bad and the remaining 98 are perfectly good, then scenario one is riskier than scenario two. If, on the other hand, the 100 equally good and they may fail due to rigerous use, then scenario one is safer because a new one would be less likely to fail.. But what is the real situation? It seems the actual failures observed by various studies were due to misuse rather than manufacturing defect. Misuses include: a) passed expiration date, b) stored in a too hot or too cool location for too long, c) damaged while being opened from the packaged and being put on, and d) put on incorrectly (inside out). And if we add rigerous use as one more cause, let's label it e). . . It seems a, b and e affect all condoms, while c and d do some by accident. Therefore, how one assesses risk will likely depend on which causes of failure he sees as most significant.. Personally, I will change condoms if CBJ is very rigerous and long and teeth are used. And I'll not ask for a change if it's mild and short.. What do you think? Posted via Mobile Device
