popsicle started following the best you've had, addiction-david butler, 3 some in a cr and and 5 others

sad story in todays citizen about david butler, a man who apparently squandered most of $115,000.00 of fraudulently obtained money in ottawa area strip clubs. it brings to mind that we use the word "addiction" far too loosely here on cerb-usually in the context of praise for one of our favored women. butler seems to have had a true addiction that was instrumental in ruining his life. it is not for me to judge this man either favorably or unfavorably, but he seems interesting...a resident of "perverts row" where he wrote poetry that he shared with the dancers. do any of us know him--dancers or hobbyists? is he a member of cerb? is there anything we should do to help him? at the very least we should reflect upon our own vulnerability. his story may not be unique.

hello antlerman and cheek, thanks for the feedback. it just seems to me, that if one doesn`t want to share info, they can just keep it to themselves. but to do it the way joeblow did it constitutes a tease and sets up a heirarchy as to who is worthy and who isn`t. to me, that doesn`t square with the"friendliness" of the board.

the point being, that you are just bragging, not helping,-- your message being-"peasants need not apply". with friends like you, etc. etc. etc.

hello, old dog. it`s s. 10(b) of the charter which defines "right to counsel" this right has to be given before any attempts may be made to obtain information from a person detained. once a detainee asserts this right, no questioning may ensue until legal counsel is available, or provided. implicit in this, is the right to remain silent. the caselaw is quite clear on this.(see r.v.manninen among others) in practical terms a problem may arise when after issuing the caution, police may attempt to convince a detainee that it`s in their "best interests to cooperate with us now". this is where detainees risk digging themselves a deep hole.

you have to be advised of your rights to remain silent and right to counsel--but sometimes these cautions are not given immediately. police sometimes try to chat you up get you to say something incriminatory before allowing you to access counsel -rule of thumb--don`t chat with the cops--say nothing before being instructed by counsel
