  1. Box of specific Laura Secord chocolates. They're one of two "traditional" gifts. And now I'm done! Yippee!
  2. As an "outsider" I find it interesting that a court can rule that a law violates Charter rights but, using Section 1, say that's ok, it's in society's best interest. And the ability for a legislature to pass a law knowing it is unconstitutional using the Notwithstanding clause. All very strange to me. My guess on the 1-year pause by the SCC is that they recognized what Parliament was trying to accomplish but the laws went too far. The pause is to allow parliament to have another go at it if they so desire.
  3. Very well done, Emily J. It is good to have all these articles in one place. Thanks!
  4. As the OP I am fascinated by the cross cultural references between my childhood memories from semi-rural Midwest US and those of you roughly the same age in Canada.
  5. Not to be lost in all the serious news, it's time for something completely different. Oklahoma puts freeze on monuments at statehouse for monkey god, Satan Really. Seriously.
  6. While I hope for the best, nothing in the record of The Harper Government suggests the government will allow women entrepreneurs to establish and conduct their own business in an area most members of the Government seem to feel is morally repugnant. Even what I feel would be the best course - do nothing - is not likely to have what I consider the desired outcome. Effectively, the Federal Government would be downloading the morality issue to the Provinces and Municipalities wherein there is no shortage of people holding to the same moral compass. I see regulation and licencing up the ying-yang to the point where anyone doing anything will run afoul of some regulation or the other and be shut down. Having said that, I'm returning to my original statement. I'm hoping for the best. In the meantime, I'll worry about the effects of publicly criticizing The Harper Government.
  7. I can understand being vague in an open post. Abother idea would be to pick an SP and pm her. These all seem to be an understanding lot. But if it has anything to do with goats - not so much.
  8. Clearly, without knowing the details (which I will not ask about) it is hard to give you a specific direction. And this sounds serious enough that I'll take a pass on the glib "try anyone!" suggestion. Might I suggest this. Can you think of a keyword or phrase that is fairly unique to your situation? Try using the Search function to see which, if any, SPs have used this word or phrase. You can either do a general search or search just your area. That being said, I wish you good winds in your endeavor.
  9. To get the level of tinting assessed go to a shop that does tinting. Off-hand I can't remember the allowable percentages but there are different levels for front, driver and rear windows. Both Ontario and Quebec regulate this. We had to have a new car retinted because the kid messed up on the driver's window. By the way, most likely the windows were not really why you got stopped. Actually he wanted to smell your breath. The holiday season and all. I got stopped at 2 am the othet morning. He leaned real close and asked me where I was coming from. Told him the airport and showed him the Greet sign and he said I was good to go. No license or registration check or anything. As I drove away it occurred to me what caught his attention was that I was doing exactly 50 in a 50 zone. Usually only drinking drivers do that. :-)
  10. There is a line running through my mind lately, "It's only you, Maynard", that's a recurring line from a TV show. I know the show and the character referenced (anyone care to guess before you go visit Mr. Google?) but when I checked, I was startled to see when the show was on the air. That got me to thinking about what was my earliest TV memory? I come up with Romper Room, Captain Kangaroo, and seeing President Eisenhower giving a speech. Clearly, that's from way back. Yours?
  11. I believe Malika pointed out in another thread the Quebec French uses the term "bait and switch". I believe the traditional French phrase would be "publicité par appât et substitution." If that's not correct, hey - I'm a flatlander who took high school Spanish! Edit: And today's lesson is be sure you read all the way through the thread before you reply! D'oh!
  12. If you are using Chrome for a browser you can right-click on an image and checking the image is one of the options. Else wise right-click the image to open in a new tab, copy the URL of that new tab, go to Google Images, click on the camera, paste in the address and Bob's your uncle - and she's your cousin. Oops! :-)
  13. Ah! I see! So it does make an order what difference it's in. :)
  14. Welcome aboard! The long form answer to your question is to advise you to read through the "New" section. If you feel like taking a shortcut, make yourself clean and presentable and visit one of the fine agencies advertising in your city's section here on CERB. Just be sure you let them know you're brand new. They'll handle you from there. Good lucl and have fun.
  15. Seriously? Who does that? Definitely not someone I would see again... lol Where did the cuddle time go? Oh, and to stay OT, MSOG is neither here nor there with me. I'm always happy with 1 SOG if that happens and as previously noted, I've happily left after NoSOG.
  16. I equally enjoy blindfolding and being blindfolded. Does that make me biblindfoldual? To me, the whole blindfold experience is the element of the unknown. What will happen where, when, and, if there are more than two people present, by whom. I remember commenting to someone once while I was blindfolded that right at that moment, the particular experience I was having made the particular part of her I was experiencing was the centre of the universe. So yeah, lots of fun!
  17. I'd go with the March date. This last one was so well organized which leads to so much fun that it is worth the wait. As for name tags, two thoughts. I seem to remember from the first Social I attended that there were no name tags because of the "civilian" wait staff. Second thought... name tags make it too easy. Each of us who is curious about another of us should take their courage in their hands and go ask. At this most recent gathering, I was asked - which made me feel good that a stranger was interested enough to ask - and I asked - and I think that asking will lead to something interesting. :)
  18. I can attest to Emily Oreo's skills in this area. :)
  19. Since she is using an alias, she quite possibly does not want to share with the world that she is an escort. It would be difficult for her to tell anyone you were looking for escorts without "outing" herself. Think of it as a variant of the US-USSR ballistic missile policy - MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction), Neither of you is likely to destroy the other. lol
  20. Based on the image search results, that nonresponse may have been your best outcome. :-) $xxx still in your pocket. Woo-hoo!
  21. If you find these acronyms and definitions at Urban Dictionary you can take them as universal (with the possible exception of North Korea - not sure what's going on there).
  22. A strict interpretation of the laws that make BJs illegal in certain circumstances would also view HJs as illegal. But realistically speaking no one cares.
  23. Here is the article: Lenore Zann, L Word actor turned MLA, alleges cyberbullying As I read this, I was thinking of cyberbllying in the sense that someone harasses or intimidates another person mercilessly as in the case of Rehtaeh Parsons. In this instance, someone posted a screen grab of the politician from the TV series "The L-Word". This upset the politician who then requested the image be taken down. When the OP refused, she tracked him down and contacted his father and school principal to ask them to get him to remove it. The OP, a 17 year old guy, removed the image. He then whinged at her for going to his father. A discussion ensued wherein he responded in a manner consistent with 17 year old guys - badly. Let the name-calling begin! This is not an instance of someone posting an image obtained surreptitiously or an image intended to be shared privately. Anyone looking on imdb.com for information about this actress-turned-politician can eventually run across this image. Notwithstanding the guttural name calling that ensued when she was persistent in trying to get the image removed or the fact that one police person agreed with Ms. Zann's characterization of the events, IMHO this is not actually a case of cyberbullying. To me, this is a case of a politician pissed off that someone has (illegally) posted a readily available image from her past that she might not want her constituency to be reminded of. Politicians get pissed off and piss off people every day so what's the discussion? I feel that putting this episode under the "cyberbullying" label risks trivializing cyberbullying. If you respond to this post and I don't care for your response and I ask you to remove it and you don't and name-calling ensues, have we crossed that line into cyberbullying? In my opinion, no. Be that as it may, I thought I'd throw this out there for discussion. Oh, and here is a screen grab of some of the Twitter exchange:
  24. I suppose it should be noted that Caliph Abu Bakr implemented a guaranteed annual income around 600 AD. Thomas Paine and Napoleon proposed similar schemes. Martin Luther King Jr., John Kenneth Galbraith, Daniel Moynihan, Richard Nixon, and Andrew Coyne all proposed programs along this line. There are minimum income programs in operation in France, Cyprus, UK, Ireland, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Portugal, Luxembourg, and Spain. Granted, some of those countries are fiscal basket cases but I don't see Germany curling up and dying in the next little while. For four years, a program popularly known as Mincome was in place in Dauphin, Manitoba, from 1974 to 1978. All the data that was collected about this project has been stored in archives and not analysed. A researcher won access to the data in 2009 and is working on it but hasn't published results yet. What is known is that, regarding whether or not people would work under such a program, everyone did except for two groups. New moms and teenagers. The moms stayed home with the kids and the teenagers stayed in school, graduated and got better jobs. There was an 8.5% decrease in hospital admissions during the program period as well as decreases in demand for other health care treatments. An article detailing the Dauphin experiment is here: A Town Without Poverty? Canada's only experiment in guaranteed income finally gets reckoning
  25. The world is a better place because Mr Mandela was in it. The world is a lesser place because he has left it. His personal struggle has ended. He is at rest. Our struggle to continue his legacy continues.
