1. You may find this thread worth reading: http://www.lyla.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=66258
2. You should probably read the FAQ, and before that, the banner across the very top of every page on this site. Talking about the places you love is great; trash-talking the ones you don't isn't.
3. My reading of this is that some students have had a good idea and been given a lot of attention for it. I haven't read anything to indicate that anyone's done much work on feasibility, never mind created a working product.
4. Hehe. Yep. Way faster than I could read. I was also amused by the fact that all four conservative justices felt the need to write butthurt dissents, and by the inability of anyone anywhere to explain the fundamental difference between this verdict and Loving. Edit: just found this. Here is your cartoon for the week, everyone.
5. "Your hang-ups about sex are stupid and pointless. Ditch them and have fun." Younger me could really have benefited from that one...
6. It was. The battle is far from over, though. I'm sure the more regressive elements of the country will prove to be ingenious in putting obstacles in the way of people they disapprove of getting married, and it'll take time to sort that out. And if schedenfreude is your thing... head over to Fox News (or any similarly-aligned website) and have a look at the comments :) I'm amazed the country isn't awash in fire and brimstone already...
7. I'm with you on the amusement. I must admit, what always entertains me is when the same people who are defending that flag then go on to proudly point out that Lincoln was a Republican and the leadership of the Southern states was mostly Democrat. Seriously, guys, make up your mind which side you support... So are you flying it because slavery is particularly meaningful to you and you want to remember it? Or do you consider the cause of the Civil War to be something else? If so, what? ...and probably never will, but that's a risk you take. Unfortunately we humans do a lot of judging people by appearances, no matter how much we might wish it were otherwise. We all do it, and we all have to live with it. So what does it mean to you, in a word (or two, or three)? What would you put up against "slavery"?
8. TW: words. I'm generally against limiting anybody's right to say whatever they damn well please... although I'm also against shielding them from the consequences of that. A right to freedom of speech does not imply a right to be listened to, or compel anyone else to broadcast what you have to say (this point is mostly lost whenever anyone gets fired for saying something stupid), and there's certainly no right to avoid ridicule and contempt if that's the reaction your speech provokes from others. One thing that really disturbs me, though is the increased movement towards allowing people to avoid seeing or hearing anything that they might dislike. Every summer, we see a rash of speakers being dis-invited from giving graduation and commencement speeches because a delicate flower somewhere disapproves of something the speaker once said. I'm fine letting people know what they might be in for so that those who might dislike it can stay away... but they'll have to accept the consequences of missing out if that's what they choose to do, and I'm absolutely against them forcing anyone else to miss out as well.
9. This looks like a very good way to get rid of people who inconvenience or embarrass the government. And another 9-0 SCC ruling in the works.
10. Well, I'm sure Tim Hunt has learned a few things. The first is that these days, what you say in front of what you think is a limited audience can go around the world very fast, and the world might disagree with you about whether it's funny or not. The second is that if you piss off a whole load of smart women you're probably going to lose.
11. A couple of things on this. First, we've lost a few members who contributed a lot and initiated a lot of discussion; they've left, or faded away, or just don't post much any more. Newer folks haven't really replaced them. Maybe it's the new legal climate, maybe it isn't. I don't know why, and I don't know what - if anything - we can do about it. There's also a bit of change in perspective. When I first started reading this board, everything was new and interesting. Now, some of the stuff that I found fascinating back then is a bit... "Oh, God. Not this thread again." I think the folks who have been around a bit longer and have seen pretty much the same thread a dozen times need to remember that there are always going to be people who haven't, and newer members aren't going to find that thread from six months ago which is now on page 14 of the forum index. The board may not now be the same as it was when I first joined... but neither am I the same as I was when I first joined. Nor is anyone else who's been around for a while. As for debates/discussions... yes, the balance here is difficult. Ideally people disagreeing will do so nicely, and people being disagreed with won't take it personally, but none of us are perfect. There's a difference between vehemently disagreeing with what someone wrote and attacking that person, but many of us have differing opinions on where the boundary between the two lies. It's even harder in a written forum where the subtleties of tone of voice are completely absent and comments posted in a light-hearted spirit are misinterpreted. The laws have had some effect... but I think this is limited. Yes, the ladies have to advertize differently, but they seem to be managing. Recos can't be as explicit as they once were... but I've never really liked the play-by-play accounts much, so I'm afraid I don't care about that :). And we now can't ask questions like, "I'm looking for someone who offers..." which is kinda annoying. I hope this will change.
12. Yes, this is a huge problem. Really, the only way to keep part of your life removed from the data-mining of FB, etc is to keep it *completely* separate especially where phones are concerned. Phaedrus has his own phone, email, Twitter, and there is absolutely no overlap between those and my real-life self. I alluded to this problem somewhat obliquely in the thread we had not long ago about giving personal information to people for screening, or whatever. Although I trust the people I choose to see to be discreet with the information I have, I consider the various apps that they may be running on their phones to be malicious, and I'm pretty sure that almost nobody really knows what those apps are hoovering up or what's done with the information. I also don't trust things like 'do not track' requests; I have no faith that these are respected. Realistically, if you use things like FB then you're going to be tracked, and the only winning move is to not play. Another thing for phones: GPS and wifi can be used to track your location. If you care about this, turn off unless you're actively using them. And Ello... it was specifically set up as reaction to this sort of crap; but like all social networks it's no good unless you have a critical mass of friends there. To the OP: honestly, I think the best bet here if this sort of thing happens again is simply to delete the number and move on. I understand trying to help, but as you've discovered it's likely to end up in drama.
13. Even if you're not into that, clicking on their links will encourage them to give us more money in future :) OK, that may be overly cynical, but it's true...
14. All the MAs I've seen at Vibe have joined me in the shower. Same goes for CMJ. Paradise/Angels... some do, some don't (they're more likely to in the newer rooms with bigger showers, I think). Agree with the OP... it's a nice touch when they do :)
15. Seriously??? How does making it harder for *any* segment of the population to access STI testing help public health in any way? This makes no sense at all.
16. CMJ runs an outcall service called Touch of Euphoria.
17. http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/loblaw-recalling-several-president-s-choice-hummus-products-1.3092281?cmp=rss I think this counts as health news. It certainly will if you're unlucky.
18. Modelâ??s GoFundMe campaign shut down after she offered topless pics to donors British glamor model Tracy Kiss took to the fundraising platform GoFundMe in order to raise a little over 15,000 dollars for a variety of good causes, including charities that support, as The Mirror put it, â??disabled people, sick children and firefighters.â? Sounds good so far. However, the 27-year-old blogger hit a bit of a speed bump when the site took issue with the offer of giving away topless pictures as an incentive for donations totaling about $15 or more. Although the sexy shots certainly sound like an effective motivator, the site shut down Kissâ??s campaign after she posted a censored photo of the topless photo she was going to give out as a premium for donations. â??I was shocked when GoFundMe closed my fundraising page because of my controversial photo content violating their terms and conditions,â? Kiss said, â??Which was a single topless photo that Iâ??d censored by emoji hearts so didnâ??t actually expose anything.â? According to Daily Dot, the practice of exchanging the topless photo per donation goes against the fundraising platformâ??s terms of service, which strictly forbids â??adult services or productsâ? and â??sexually suggestive content.â? That being said, the modelâ??s campaign was violating the rules and was shut down after racking up about $1,500 in donations. That didnâ??t stop Kiss from being surprised at that the site ended up shutting down her campaign. Still, itâ??s worth pointing out that GoFundMe and other fundraising platforms have taken aggressive stances against campaigns organized by sex workers, including campaigns where sex workers were uniting to expand their legal rights and access to health care and medical services. It certainly raises an eyebrow that those types of campaigns get shut down while a pizza shop that openly discriminates against gay people is rewarded with almost one million dollars via GoFundMe. Ever since getting booted off GoFundMe, Kiss moved her campaign over to YouCaring, only to have that one pulled as well after raising a few thousand dollars. According to her blog, Kissâ??s â??Bucket List For a Better Worldâ? campaign seems to have found a home at the appropriately named CrowdFunder, so good luck to her.
19. Absolutely. Bear in mind that unless you're very wealthy, you're not going to keep your favorite provider in business single-handed; and if she leaves the business because it's not worthwhile any more, you lose too - in fact, you lose more than the rest of us. The best thing you can do for someone who you'd like to carry on seeing is to do what you can to ensure she builds a successful business... and yes, this will involve seeing other clients. Recommendations are a good way to make this happen. The idea that writing a reco might backfire because your ATF will be unavailable is probably not actually something you need to worry about. If you get on that well, she'll make sure she makes time for you.
20. I'm talking about overclocking pink sparkly Hummers (abridged) Qu'est-ce que le fuck? Ah, well. Twitter is like that.
21. Summer: curvier than most MAs, very friendly and talkative. I like her. Reco thread at https://www.lyla.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?ltr=S&t=45598. General comment: if folks have links to reco threads, posting them is useful. They often give a better feel for someone than 1-line descriptions (although those are far better than nothing).
22. AFIAK - no, unless you're affiliated with a spa or agency in Ottawa or Toronto. Have a look at the Rules/FAQ link at the top of the page - there's lots of stuff there (that I haven't read for a very long time, since I don't advertize :) )
