If you find you really can't get around the irritating region stuff, you could always look into paid VPN or proxy services to make it look as if you're in the region you want to be in at the time :)

Never mind smartphones... Every cellphone is in touch with its nearest tower at any given time, and the cellphone companies keep logs on which phone is associated with each tower at any given time. That doesn't pinpoint your exact location, but it's not bad, especially in urban areas. And even when they're turned off, phones STILL periodically touch base with the nearest tower, so your cellphone provider still knows roughly where you are. The only way to avoid that is to remove your cellphone's battery - which, let's face it, most of us aren't going to bother to do.

To be honest, this kind of thing is the main reason why I don't tend to request particular things in advance. Yes, there are particular things I like, and I'll definitely go and see someone who I think it likely to provide those things... but I much prefer to let any given encounter play out however it happens to go at the time. And yes, that does mean that I'm not going to tick all of my favourite boxes every time I see someone... but that's OK. If someone's good enough at X, then as far as I'm concerned she can keep me happy without doing Y and Z at all, even though Y and Z are things I generally like. And yes, I'll go back and see her.... again, and again. Unfortunately. If my mechanic left my car in as good shape as SPs leave me, life would be much better...

This is just generally awesome.

It can be hard to tell the difference, though. I generally plan things ahead, but quite often that planning is something like, "OK, I'll take off from work and see X for an hour if I can." Under those circumstances, I'll never book in advance (because the risk of cancellation is too high to justify messing anyone else around), and I accept that when I call and ask, "Is X available in half an hour's time?", I may well not get the answer I'm looking for. If I'm going to see someone in the evening or during the weekend, I'll generally plan in advance, because it's easier when work is less likely to get in the way (or can more legitimately be told to take a back seat for a bit).
