  2. I don't think the difference is 40 years. The difference is Texas as opposed to Iowa (or anywhere else in the civilized world, for that matter). The other huge issue here is the criminalization of sex work. The fact that the simple exchange of sex for money is illegal in Texas means that there was no legal contract between them. Usually, if you pay for service from someone and you're dissatisfied, that's a civil matter rather than a criminal one, so even if they walk off with your money you still can't shoot them. You can sue them to get your money back, but you can't call it theft. If the murderer in this case had shot a gardener or cleaner or lawyer or anyone else whose business was legal, he'd have been convicted as no theft could have occurred. But because sex work is illegal... there was no legal contract, so her walking out with the money counts as theft, and it was night-time, and so it was OK - under Texas law - for him to shoot her. I wonder if the prohibitionists who are currently hand-wringing over how terrible this is will acknowledge their own role in making it possible? I doubt it, somehow.
  3. One thing to say on this... if you're going to post pics from a CERB lady's album, it's probably a good idea - as well as just good manners - to drop her a PM and ask first. I trust that everyone who's posted so far has done so :)
  4. And on that note, I can't believe nobody's mentioned My Big Fat Anal Wedding :)
  5. Congratulations (late, but better late than never :) )Here's to the next thousand...
  6. I have mixed feelings about this. I'm not sure whether to be annoyed that they nixed it, or happy that it got off the ground in the first place... -------------------- Brazil pulls "happy prostitute" anti-AIDS campaign Brazil's health ministry has removed a website proclaiming "I am happy being a prostitute." The message was aimed at reducing the AIDS-related stigma suffered by prostitutes in an effort to encourage them to get treated for sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), but it was dropped from the ministry's website Tuesday. Critics argued the slogan promoted prostitution. Health Minister Alexandre Padilha told reporters: "I don't think this is a message the ministry should be sending. Our campaigns orient people how to avoid sexual transmitted diseases." Some lawmakers had slammed the slogan ahead of his announcement. "We are fighting childhood prostitution and here comes a campaign encouraging it," federal deputy Liliam S? said in a recent congressional committee meeting, Reuters reported. Brazil has seen a boom in sex tourism in recent years, the BBC reported, raising concern for state and federal officials. The news agency added that the country will continue with its current campaign called "Not ashamed of using a condom," but will remove references to the "happy prostitute." Brazil will host the 2013 Confederations Cup, 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. The president of the Association of Prostitutes of the city of Belo Horizonte said in January that English classes are being offered to prostitutes ahead of the games. Diseases that can be spread through sex include chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, HPV, pelvic inflammatory disease, syphilis and trichomoniasis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more information on preventing sexually transmitted infections.
  7. Yes, this is horrific. I can't think of a purer expression of contempt for a person than a verdict like that. FWIW, here's quite a good explanation of what Texas law says, and how you can use it to end up with an abomination like this.
  8. Next time I get hurt.... I want the right band-aid, dammit!
  9. Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight But I've never told anybody why, and I'm not about to start now :)
  10. You have a battery pack in your foot? :)
  11. No idea, I'm afraid. Does it happen with another browser? You should have IE, at least, and you could try Chrome. Knowing that would help narrow it down to a browser issue or a Flash issue.
  12. My theory: they had a couple of these...
  13. I think he's just making the argument that CBJ can have some advantages...
  14. Excellent, Cat! Thanks for all your posts... and here's to many more!
  15. I'm fine with pets being around, but... not in the same room during playtime, please. And also not being audibly unhappy about being locked out, 'cos that'd be a serious downer too. Obviously this is far harder for a SP who's traveling; I'm sure it's much easier on a pet to be locked out of one room in the house where they live than to be shut in a single bit of a hotel room they're unfamiliar with. Christy, if you're looking for advice, my 2 cents (for what they're worth): do whatever you want, as far as bringing pets and shutting them away (or not) is concerned; but make it clear in your ads what the situation is (in particular, if they won't be shut away, say so) and then anyone who objects to it can avoid an awkward situation later. You may still get problems with people who can't or won't read ads, but that's not your fault :)
  16. Happy Birthday, Porthos! Hope you're having a fantastic time!
  17. It may just be that imageshack doesn't allow hotlinking (which I posted about in this thread). You'd need to host the pics somewhere else. You could always just create an album here...
  18. Katherine, your wish is our command! To be honest, given the explosive nature of Lee's culinary productions, we had already given serious thought to a powder room or two. We're currently thinking of going with a nautical theme (I trust you'll approve of this, since you're in the Maritimes?). Maybe something modeled on the powder room from HMS Warrior? One thing I'm a little confused about... while researching powder rooms, I've seen a lot of references to magazines. Could someone please explain this to me? I'm sure there are better places to do your reading than in a roomful of Lee's curry, or the consequences thereof...
