  1. Sure. How about the 11 women's groups that Harper defunded in one week's time back in June? or how about the defunding of Sister's in Spirit, a grassroots organization dedicated to raising awareness about the missing and murdered Aboriginal women in this country? or how about the government's stance on sex work? That it's not the government's "obligation" to "protect" sex workers from a "dangerous" profession of their choosing? or how about his lack of action on climate change at international meetings? shall i go on?
  2. I don't really know where you got the impression that me posting this was somehow pro-liberal. To be frank, I think all parties misrepresent the beliefs I hold of what it would look like to live in a more just world. I was merely pointing out that the Harper government has destroyed much of the gains that social movements in this country have achieved and have been working on for a long time. I don't think the Liberals are much better and I'm not sure why everyone keeps playing this game of 'either or'. It's quite telling of both our political system and our electoral system. Sky
  3. I didn't post this in the election thread because I feel like this should stand on its own and don't want it to be lost in the midst of a-gajillion posts. http://shitharperdid.ca.nyud.net/ xoxo Sky
  4. I watched about 20 minutes in total (parts of the immigration question, parts of the law and order question and parts of the health care question) and had to turned it off several times because of how enraged i got. Question for "Canadians": How are these d-bags even allowed to be 'leaders'. I feel like I'm watching 4 clones of one person arguing with each other. Sigh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. "One of those girls" I always wonder why people choose to see escorts if they think so low of us... I've had a few clients make similar comments to me (while in session!), not many but a couple and I can't help but *eye roll*. Love to you V!
  6. Do you want one? I can prob post something on FB and all my friends are in exams and at least one is bound to opt outta going.
  7. HILARIOUS-- He starts twitching when he realizes what the song is about. xoxo Sky
  8. Also, "If voting changed anything, they'd make it illegal" Emma Goldman On the other hand, I still see the importance of voting....for now.
  9. haha i meant the way in which politicians kind of bring their politics into the center during elections so that they can appeal to majority votes. essentially they aren't staying true to the politics that they actually carry.
  10. Not sure if you've followed many cases in which officers have been charged with offenses against the public but the pattern usually follows that they are NEVER convicted so don't worry, this dude will run the streets free some day soon. Officers have this absurd brotherhood in which the union will defend them to their death and other officers will NEVER testify against the person on trial. It's ridiculous! So much for no one is above the law. And I will also ask you if you ever question the way in which many cases in which the perpetrators are "regular citizens" will have their day in court. I feel like when these things involve police officers, everyone is quick to jump to their defense. Again, I don't know, I'm just posing the question.
  11. It was never stated that this isn't the case... all he said is that the issue is not specific to sex workers, there was no underlying gender implication.
  12. The Ottawa police have the lowest rates in all of Canada for investigating sexual assault allegations. Last summer the Carleton University administration issued a statement on the rape of a student in 2007 saying that she should have taken precautions to ensure her own safety and therefore it was not the University's fault. Just a couple of months ago there was an incident in which the Ottawa Police called a 16-year-old girl's allegation of sexual assault a "hoax" Everyday in Ottawa, 50 women are turned away from women's shelters. Now, if the Slutwalk is not relevant in Ottawa, I don't know where it is relevant. As someone who works as a sexual assault support worker, I can assure you that this event is very relevant here. I can see how it's hard to make the connection here, but it's relevant nevertheless. Sky
  13. Totally Agreed! (Thank you Andrea Smith!) Ok, I will stop derailing the thread and back to Slut Walk Ottawa!
  14. Nathalie! I'm also a prison abolitionist! Yeah, I know the organizers and let's just say... Some of my close friends tried to jump on the organizing train but then were pushed out a bit because they were too "radical" (sigh). But yeah, i've been doing a lot of reading about prisons/sexual assault and the research will show time and time again that more incarcerations/harsher penalties do JACK SHIT to lower crime rates (particularly sexual assault crimes) and I'm pretty pissed off that these people who are organizing are taking this perspective. On the other hand, the mainstream prison abolitionist movement has failed to provide the anti-violence movement with viable alternatives for dealing with these awful crimes! Bleh Sigh sigh sigh! BUT! I will be marching as a slut and wearing all my pride that day too! Additional Comments: THIS JUST IN: Folks will no longer be marching to the courts. And the demands are: "to have an introspective analysis into the systemic cause of gendered violence"
  15. i whole-heartedly agree! although there are some that are less pre-occupied with sex, though, this still seems to be a common trend!
  16. For sure! I am referring more to the irony that most of the people who I've met who are doing thongs that the church wouldn't necessarily approve of came From the catholic school system! Posted via Mobile Device
  17. As I meet more people considered to be "deviant" in our society (sex workers, leftist-hippie-anarchist activists, people doing sexual health education, queer-identified folks) I am realizing that a lot of these people went to Catholic schools when growing up. This is hilarious! I trace back my tendencies to resist authority and challenge the status quo to when I was a kid and would be kicking the seat of the person in front of me while being forced to attend mass, and to call bullshit during my religion classes when talking about things like abortion, and putting on sex-positive/queer positive assemblies in my all-girl-catholic-high school (and almost being suspended for this!). It seems that, in my experience at least, Catholic schools breed rebels/ "deviants"/ aka awesome people! So, how many of you attended Catholic schools and did this shape the kind of person you are and the kinds of activities you like to do? If so, did you turn out to be a "rebel" in the eyes of the Catholic school system? Share and laugh away! xoxo Sky
  18. hahahah!!!! http://wrongnumbertexts.com/post/4086613445/worst-pick-up-line-of-all-time
  19. Well, I will likely be voting for the best candidate in my riding. He's actually pretty good and he supports a lot of the grassroots initiatives I'm part of. But I still think this system is broken and breeds power trips and corruption and lies and neautralization of candidates.
