  1. Ever notice how the English language is filled with words that are considered to be offensive that have histories of discrimination and marginalization? Examples: the r-word (r#t@rd- oppression of people with disabilities), f@g- opression of queer communities, n-word, oppression of black folks, b!tch-oppression of women... Also notice that a lot of the words in English language that are offensive are also body parts? Examples: ass, c word, d!ck etc... This is a reflection of our anti-sex anti-body culture. (The F-word originally meant "to have sex" and now it's one of the most offensive words in the language) A language can tell you a lot about a culture. (Think about how many words we have for money in the English language? Now think about how many words we have for community?) I used to be obsessed with etymology (the study of the origins of words). Type in any word here and see where it comes from and what it originally meant: http://www.etymonline.com/ This book called '''' was really awesome when I read it. For those of you interested in it: http://www.ingalagringa.com/''''/, there you go! Sky
  2. Young people have been fueling social movements for a long time. It's so frustrating to hear people talk about the "apathetic youth". I'm sure there are just as many apathetic adults as there are youth, no need to be ageist. Glad you were all here to hear my rant haha. Love this video! Sky
  3. @ Gobofraggle That is so important to have: someone to listen to you. Im so fortunate to have so many listeners in my life. Im glad things are better now!
  4. I attended an amazing workshop this past weekend. It was a training for facilitators of workshops (I attended it because I will be facilitating a workshop on self care in the coming weeks and another one on consent and escorting the week after that). Anyway, something that I realized, which is so obvious and yet so overlooked, is the power of thinking about the positive things in our lives. Often, at least in my life and my immediate circles of friends, we are quite self critical and pessimistic (and rightly so seeing as life can be quite harsh at times). Nevertheless, positive reinforcement in our lives is definitely one of the many ways we can attempt to maintain a certain level of happiness and provide ourselves with the means to be able to care for ourselves to avoid burn outs, depressions and overwhelming exhaustion and sadness in general. This thread's purpose is to allow you to tell the CERB community about one good thing that has happened to you in the last couple of weeks. My hope is that this thread will be lively for quite some time and people can use it to share their positive experiences with others on this site. It doesn't have to be CERB related or SP/Hobbiest related. Anything you want, really. GO!
  5. In regards to not being able to answer the phone when your SO is around and you're late for an appt, can't you just turn it off? Or send a quick "sorry" text and then turn it off? There has to be something you can do to meet us half way on this one! Sky
  6. Ahora's Zak's Diner when you're up late Cafe Nostalgica (Ottawa U campus, a billion vegetarian options)
  7. Being a new CERB member, its actually very convenient for me that I will be able to meet so many people that are part of the CERB community in such a short time. Looking forward to it! Sky
