What The Heck is going on in the UK
Alexandra-Sky replied to cory's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
"A gun was found at the scene and a spokesman for the independent police watchdog said it appeared the officer was shot first before police returned fire. However, one eyewitness claimed the suspect was killed as he lay on the ground in Ferry Lane" http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23975846-man-shot-dead-by-police-in-tottenham.do It seems to me that even though this man supposedly shot at police, that they killed him while he was lying on the ground after they had shot him down. So really, he was no longer a threat to them at this point, but knowing the police, they killed him anyway. I generally still wonder why people have such large trust in the institution that is the police. There was even a thread going on last week or so about the crap that they do. Well, I'm headed off of this thread. It was nice to have these discussions with you folks. Bed time for me. oh and before i go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBgRd12vzv4&feature=player_embedded -
What The Heck is going on in the UK

To be honest, I can't really comment on whether or not I agree with the acts because of my limited amount of knowledge on the situation. What I do know is that it seems like the phrase "desperate acts call for desperate measures" likely applies here. I can't really imagine why else people would risk their lives to riot if their lives weren't already characterized by things like the article mentions: a huge poverty gap, large police violence against the people. Again though, my point wasn't really that the riots are legitimate forms of protest, but rather that, before we make comments like "they have nothing better to do" perhaps it's good to get some context. -

My point was moreso around the idea that it's silly to just dimiss the riots as an immature act by people who "don't have nothing better to do" and that context plays a large part in any action of this sort. -
This post is SO arrogant! 1. What is with the 'fellas' lingo? 2. People on plenty of fish are the for a myriad of reasons, not just for sex. 3. I would say that the same goes for CERB. While sex is a big part in all of this, I know from experience that there is a lot more to this than just sex and that some people seek the 'other' aspects of these encounters too. 4. CERB and the sex-work industry can more or less guarantee a no strings arrangement which works out well for a lot of folks on here, especially if they are married or want to be discreet. 5. One time sex isn't necessarily always the case for people who find dates off CERB. You can come back and pay again:) 6. It makes me wonder why it is that you're even on CERB when you claim to get all you need and more on POF. Maybe you should delete your account?

There is a context to London's riots that can't be ignored http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/08/context-london-riots Particularly: "Combine understandable suspicion of and resentment towards the police based on experience and memory with high poverty and large unemployment and the reasons why people are taking to the streets become clear. (Haringey, the borough that includes Tottenham, has the fourth highest level of child poverty in London and an unemployment rate of 8.8%, double the national average, with one vacancy for every 54 seeking work in the borough.) Those condemning the events of the past couple of nights in north London and elsewhere would do well to take a step back and consider the bigger picture: a country in which the richest 10% are now 100 times better off than the poorest, where consumerism predicated on personal debt has been pushed for years as the solution to a faltering economy, and where, according to the OECD, social mobility is worse than any other developed country." *we will understand nothing of these events if we ignore the history and the context in which they occur* The UK riots: the psychology of looting http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/09/uk-riots-psychology-of-looting London Riots. (The BBC will never replay this. Send it out) Let's stop assuming the police are on our side http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jul/26/metropolitan-police-arrests-hacking -

I have lots of awesome articles to post when I get a chance but I think that the bottom line is that inequality has reached a peak and that people have had enough. This is their form of revolting. Now, whether or not people recognize this as a legitimate form of resistance is a whole different story and should be discussed further elsewhere. -
Gender Equality and the Economics of Sex

Did you read this in a book entitled "Virgin"? [quote name=SamanthaEvans;252348 But the real value of virginity as a selling-point in such cultures is that a potential husband can be assured that his new bride will not be pregnant by any other man nor will she have any sexually transmissible infections. The enforcement of women's monogamy is always about guaranteeing the paternity of offspring which' date=' in turn, is about ensuring that property and assets will only be inherited by the children of the same man or by his blood relations. Considerations related to women's sexual orientation, sexual preferences and desires have no place in this system because women do not, in effect, own their own bodies or their sexuality. Women do not necessarily make decisions, as a group, about when to have sex or with whom. Those decisions are not made because of women's preferences, but because of cultural norms. .[/quote] Also, they don't even talk about which factors they used to determine which women had more power in different societies (when talking about women who live in more 'equal' societies than those who don't). What are they comparing? This likely relies on really racist and Western notions of the liberated Western woman versus the oppressed, poor woman of the Third World. Bull! -

Gender Equality and the Economics of Sex

Is it just me or is this study and the results really: sexist, racist and heteronormative? And the explanations for the results are not based on fact, but rather pre-conceived notions of gender -
thought i'd add this thread to the many threads of sillyness/saracasm and positivity. So to answer the question in the title: when you write one sentence of your paper and then quickly check back to CERB and refresh your page to see if anything new and interesting is up! let's here some of yours! xo Sky

I am pretty sure that I've heard good things about Phaedrus, but I just can't remember where! Anyway, he is awesome!

I like ottawaadventurer because he likes feminism. (As per a post of mine he replied to). And you know a dude is awesome when he openly admits to liking feminism. (As a side note, in my eyes anti-sex work ppl aren't feminists, they just think they are)

Do you remember my post entitled "when commenting on personal issues"? It is silly to think that people can remove their feelings from debates, especially considering that some of the negativity that you're speaking of has come from threads about our work (sex work). Given how this sort of work is so stigmatized, it affects virtually all aspects of our lives and it therefore very personal to us. I would say the same thing goes for those of you on the other side. I think it's illogical to expect people to remove their personal feelings from debates, particularly when what is being debated is someone's lifestyle.

The angry feminist comment was more so of a general comment playing off of what people usually label me for giving the examples that I did. It was not directed at you per se, moreso in general. I'm quite a proud feminist and therefore was mocking the use of feminism as a negative term by people unlike myself or yourself for that matter.

What evidence, exactly, are you basing your argument that decrim will worsen conditions for sex workers? Also, I'm sick and tired of hearing about how decrim will increase the exploitation of women. Women have been being exploited since the beginning of time: we don't get paid for ALL the labour we do around the house: cooking, cleaning, raising children etc, we get paid 70 percent of what men get paid as a whole, women are being legally trafficked into canada under what is known as the 'nanny program' in which basically their life and legal status is dependant on their canadian master, migrant workers are farming all over rural ontario for the rest of us to eat, and then treated like trash and not paid well and then deported when we no longer need their labour. The list goes on and on. And before you go accusing me of being an angry feminist, you can look up all of what i have just said and find that they are not just my opinion of things, but all of this is indeed factual. If people actually cared about the exploitation of women, they'd be working to ensure that all of what i just mentioned above and more wasn't happening. For those who are against prostitution (which they claim to be the same as trafficking), they don't actually care about all of what i have just listed. What they care about is the sex part...

Weird, she is a friend of mine. I wouldn't say she is abolotionist/prohibitionist. She lets me talk about my work, but you can tell it's not her strong topic but she is always interested in learning, i think! -

Semantics, Perception and Respect

What a lovely post. I mist add though, in response to your comment about not being able to refer to a woman as a slut, that usually when words are reclaimed it's only appropriate for the group who has reclaimed them to use it to define themselves. And so, I think that many others would agree with me here that they would likely be offended if someone used the word slut to describe them unless they were a close friend of the person they are describing. With love, Sky
