Rob Ford
qwertyaccount replied to Nicolette Vaughn's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
I live and pay taxes in Toronto. The "tax and spend" mantra was rampant and special interest groups ruled the roost. Ford's fiscal polices are hard to knock. His personal life, well that's a different matter. He does need to seek help and clean up his act. The press loathes him, as do the city councillors -- they have since the day he was elected and have been on a continuous witch hunt to find fault with the man at every opportunity and publicise it as far and wide as possible. If I was in his place, having to deal with the non-stop attacks and a council that enjoys voting for whatever Ford is against, I would probably be drunk half the time too. You're right Nicolette, he should have kept his mouth shut -- every utterance the man has made has been examined with a microscope and anything with an inking of being improper was taken out of context and used as the "sound byte de jour". As far as his job, if he was able to accomplish what he has dunk and on crack, let me know what kind he likes so I can send him a case. Council, instead of stripping his powers and effectively giving them to themselves, should have called a snap election to allow the people in charge, the residents of Toronto, decide who they want running the show. No publicity is bad publicity -- just ask Charlie Sheen, Drew Barrymore, Bill Clinton, etc. Most no one thinks any different about Toronto than they did before, if they even knew Toronto existed. If anything, the attention is helping put Toronto on the map and will probably end up increasing tourism. How do you think of Washington D.C., the capital of the United States? Their mayor, Marion Barry was videotaped smoking crack cocaine, arrested & jailed for 6 months in a federal prison. After his release he was elected to city council and then back to mayor. -

Most of us wouldn't be able to use the "Bill Clinton" defense :) When Is Sex Not "Sexual Relations"? By Richard Lacayo When Bill Clinton gave his deposition in the Paula Jones case, he said he had never had "sexual relations" with Monica Lewinsky. But Lewinsky has reportedly testified to a number of acts that most people think of as sex. Can both statements somehow be true? Is it possible that the two of them had intimate contact, yet Clinton still did not perjure himself? In the intricate world of the law, a world of hairsplitting distinctions where the President is famously at home, it just may be so. Here's why. At Clinton's deposition, Jones' legal team asked Judge Susan Webber Wright to approve a very precise, three-part definition of sexual relations. Clinton's attorney Robert Bennett objected to the whole definition, but to the last two parts especially, as being too broad. Wright agreed to disallow parts 2 and 3, leaving only the first, narrowest definition of sex in place. With that, Clinton may have been given the room to offer a technically "true" denial to the question of whether he had sex with Lewinsky--even if she happened to perform fellatio on him. The truncated definition characterizes sex in terms of a checklist of body parts, including the genitals, breast and thigh. Oral sex would not necessarily require the President to touch anything on Lewinsky that appears on that list. Strange as it may sound, under one reading of the definition, Lewinsky could have been having sex with him (because she was "touching" the President's genitals) while at the same moment, he was not having sex with her. (At the deposition, Clinton wasn't asked if she had sexual relations with him, just if he had them with her.) Isn't the law a wonderfully intricate device? There are problems with the legalistic defense. For one thing, if Clinton and Lewinsky did have oral sex, is it really likely that he did not touch any body parts mentioned in the Jones definition? (Lewinsky has testified that Clinton fondled her.) And because that definition says that a person engages in sex if he or she "causes" contact with the genitals of "any person," it could be argued that Clinton caused Lewinsky's contact with his, even if he did not otherwise touch her. He could reply that she was the cause, or at least the active partner, while he was merely the passive receiver, but that makes him seem like either an implausibly shrinking violet or a very cool customer. Beyond all that, Lewinsky's secret grand-jury testimony may simply be so detailed and explicit that it leaves no room for loopholes. Even if the word-wiggle keeps Clinton out of the perjury trap, it won't help him politically because it doesn't account for his Jan. 26 televised insistence that he "did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky." When he spoke before the cameras, the lawyerly definition of sex wasn't in force. And in a recent TIME/CNN poll, 87% of those questioned said that oral sex was, well, sex. Hiding behind the ultimate tortuous legalism could help the President get through his testimony, but it won't pass the laugh test with the American people--which is why Clinton won't be parsing the meaning of "sexual relations" in any public statements. --By Richard Lacayo. -
I appreciate your safety concern. There are many hotels near me that I wouldn't want to visit during the day, let alone a lady alone at night. Many truck stops are very clean with lots of security -- there is often tens of millions of dollars worth of trucks and cargo on the lot. Sleeper cab trucks cost more than a lot of houses and many drivers earn more than a lot of office workers.

Classifieds System ... and why?
qwertyaccount replied to mod's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
Thanks for the link Alexxxis. I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree especially early in the morning; I read about the beta classifieds but until you posted the link I couldn't find them. Mod: Perhaps one of the "Sponsors list" items that are on the right side of the page could be used as a quick way of adding a temporary link to make it more obvious and easier to use which should encourage more people to use it. -

Probably just clock drift and the NTP (atomic) time server that the webserver is configured to use is near impossible to reach (like time-a.nist.gov), so the time hasn't been corrected in a while. This time of year because of daylight savings time some NTP servers can be extra hard to reach. On the other hand, realnicehat has an excellent theory. I can't remember, do we take the red or blue pill?

Being single, never married and with no kids I surely don't fit the "standard" that most think exists. My father has even asked on a few occasions if I was gay. Several of my married with children guy friends say that they are jealous. The balance of my guy/gal friends are silent on the issue or think I should marry and have kids. Look how happy Al and Peggy are: At first I thought misery loves company, but decided long ago that no friend would knowingly wish misery on me. I then concluded that people like for others to be just like them, one-upmanship and "keeping up with the Joneses": -If someone replaced their 34" tube TV with a flat screen, you should too -If someone has a 60" big screen TV, you should too -If someone is married, you should be too -If someone belongs to the iCult, you should buy apple stuff too even though there are many better, less expensive no strings attached alternatives. -If someone drives a Toyota, you should too -If someone drives a pick-up, you should too -If someone has 3 kids, you should too -If your big sister has 3 kids, you should have 4 Society also seems to expect the following cycle: -Going to college -Getting married -Buying a home -Having kids -Sending your kids to college -Paying for your kid's weddings -Giving your kids money to buy a home -Babysitting your grandchildren -scrimping & saving in retirement, not spending money & enjoying life, so you have more money to leave your kids and grandchildren. I'm happy the way I am, doing my own thing on my own terms and enjoy coming home to a place where everything is exactly the same as I left it. I can't count the number of times I've asked for the return of tool that I lent a friend only to hear "My wife/kids put it away and no one knows where it is". Off to the hardware store I go again. -
People in the '80s were able to let loose and have a great time acting silly at a party without any fear of a photograph or video being immediately, or ever, being shown to everyone on the planet. > Almost no one carried a film camera or video camera - too expensive, bulky and heavy. Theoretically, women could carry a camera in a large purse, but why would they. > Film cameras had limited shots and pictures were expensive to develop and duplicate, instant polaroid film was expensive and difficult & expensive to duplicate. Handing out copies of photos was a pain in the butt, post-mailing them was expensive and a bigger pain in the butt. > Video cameras were very expensive, big, bulky and heavy. Duplicating video tapes was slow and expensive. Showing a video required a VCR and TV. Rob Ford surely misses the '80s.
