For me it wasn't. All it took was a shit load of liquor and my nutbar cousin being in town... I don't advise that route for a first tattoo. Something for your mother is a beautiful sentiment though. I lost my mother as well, and even though I had the core idea for a memorial tattoo, it took me a few years before I was able to settle on the perfect design. There's no sense in rushing something that's so personal and close to the heart.

I was in High School, It was the first time I had ever seen the television in the student lounge tuned to CNN. It was surreal to look around and see everybody's varied reactions, that's what I remember most. Teachers mouth's agape with horror. Young, callous idiots trying to pretend they weren't affected. Other young people looking confused, and frightened, especially by the reactions of the adults in the room. It certainly was a metaphorical two by four to my enclosed little teenage world. It was also one of the first times I pulled my head out of the sand and really paid attention to the news and world events. I think I need a nice smoke and a cold beer...
