Slipping under the radar: uOttawa researchers study third parties in the sex industry By Sabrina Abraham http://www.gazette.uottawa.ca/en/2013/04/slipping-under-the-radar-uottawa-researchers-study-third-parties-in-the-sex-industry/
Weâ??ve all liked some managers and disliked others. In the latter case, we may have thought of going off and starting our own business. This can be great. To get your clients, you may need a website to attract them and a receptionist inviting them in. However, regardless of the service you offer, starting a business almost always means finding third parties to help manage, organize or provide a service of some kind. According to Chris Bruckert, professor in the Department of Criminology, and her doctoral student Tuulia Law, this applies anywhere in the market, including in one of the most clandestine of trades: the sex industry. In their newly released report, Beyond Pimps, Procurers and Parasites: Third Parties in the Sex Industry, Bruckert and Law look at third parties in the incall and outcall sectors of the sex industry. The image that may come to mind at the mention of the term â??third partiesâ? in connection with the sex industry is that of a violent and abusive pimp. This media stereotype is one that Bruckert and Law challenge. A third party, defined in the report as â??someone else involved in the transaction that is neither the client nor the worker,â? may be a person anyone in mainstream business would call uponâ??a manager, contractor, mentor or colleague. â??In the sex industry, all these people are criminalized,â? explains Bruckert. â??Basically, the law says that if you are providing services for someone to facilitate their business or if your service would not exist if it wasnâ??t for the prostitution, you are living on the avails. It is really straightforward, [and affects] all these people: drivers, photographers, security and contractors.â? In 2009, Bruckert and Law received funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada to conduct their research. The report is based on interviews with 50 third parties and 27 sex workers in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. â??Most of the third parties we spoke to were actually women,â? says Law. â??And the majority of those womenâ??even some of the men we spoke toâ??were or had been sex workers.â? Law and Bruckert explain that contrary to common belief, sex workers often expressed positive feelings towards third parties. â??One of the reasons why sex workers work with third parties is because it is safer. There is someone who knows where they are, has information about the client and has done screening,â? says Bruckert. She goes on to explain that â??the report doesnâ??t come out saying that third parties are all wonderful bosses or associates, but what it does say is that third parties are really important to sex workers. We have a situation in Canada where sex work itself is not against the law but everything around it is criminalized. This works to the detriment of sex workers.â? I love it all! Especially the stuffing. And the dark meat! My mom makes the best turkey dinner. And her gravy is legendary. My favourite part though is the leftovers she gives me to take home so I can make hot turkey & stuffing sandwiches for the next few days. Yummmmy! -

Bought a couple new goodies for my new place/early birthday presents for myself! :) Two new TVs! Finally got rid of my old shitty ancient relic tube! Splurged a bit on a sexy 50" plasma for the living room and a nice little 32" LED for the bedroom. So excited!

Cleo & Monique are exactly right. I haven't had a no-show since 2012, and even then I only had 2 when I first started working independently because I was learning how to screen & book, and still figuring stuff out. It took some trial and error to perfect my processes and now everything is all gravy. We see these threads all the time and if something's not working for a lady and she is having lots of problems, she should consider taking a look at the way she is operating and make some changes, if necessary. Everything can always be improved! And I'm with Monique about being selective about my guests. I think that's why I still love this job so much. Quality over quantity! :)

Mens body wash
Sweet Emily J replied to Meaghan McLeod's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
I keep a few different varieties of men's body wash in my restroom. The best one in my opinion and also the one that my guests seem to use most is the "Dove Men's Care: Sensitive". It's labelled as "Unscented", however it does have a very mild light scent (I have a super keen sense of smell), but nothing compared to some of the other options. I agree that it is actually pretty hard to find unscented men's products, as I have looked high and low, and this is the best one I have found. -

The real highlight of my day today was a long-awaited first time meeting this morning with a wonderful gentleman, which worked out perfectly to be a fantastically orgasmic & super hot awesome good time. ;) After that I took my full spare change jar to the "TD Coin Counter" to empty it & start over, and I got back $376! Not too shabby! That was followed by a well-deserved delicious home made lunch of steak & eggs (beef tenderloin, over easy organic freerun brown eggs, bell peppers, onions, fresh jalapenos, aged cheddar - YUM). Now I am thinking about an afternoon nap... Pretty friggin' awesome day so far!! lol :)

The "play on words" thread
Sweet Emily J replied to Gabriella Laurence's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
I don't know if this falls in line with "play on words", but I saw an ad on BP the other day for a lady that was advertising herself as a "beautiful mix of chinese and cockasian". Twice in the same ad. Maybe it would have been a funny play on words if it was done on purpose, and not by accident. I feel bad for poking fun, but seriously, proofread & spellcheck your shit, people. -
I was inspired by cat's mouth-watering post from earlier on the Sandwich thread, so I made my own version of bacon and egg salad, on a flax seed bagel. :) Also a side of sauteed asparagus, baby spinach & garlic, with a delicious cold glass of milk :) Yum.

The world's first Bitcoin escort agency Bitcoin brothels are here. Birmingham, UK based escort agency Passion VIP now accepts payments in Bitcoin - making it the world's first. By Violet Blue http://www.zdnet.com/the-worlds-first-bitcoin-escort-agency-7000021209/
Would-be clients of upscale escorts in Birmingham, UK now have way to pay for escort services that's just as discreet as cash and more secure: Bitcoin has officially entered the realm of sex work. The world's oldest profession met the world's youngest currency as escort agency Passion VIP announced it now accepts payment for its adult companionship services in bitcoin. Located in the second most populous British city (after London), Passion VIP is hoping the introduction of bitcoin payments will open up a new market by giving clients an alternative payment method. Passion VIP (birminghamescorts.co.uk, site NSFW) told us, We felt there were probably a lot of people out there who had Bitcoins and no way to really enjoy spending them. Accepting bitcoins seemed an obvious extension of our own interest in the currency. Bitcoin is called the currency of the Internet: it is a new, peer-to-peer exchanged, decentralized electronic form of cash that can also be described as a "cryptocurrency." It is independent of any central authority, and bitcoins can be transferred through a computer or smartphone without an intermediate financial institution. In a recent announcement, the plucky UK escort service added bitcoin transactions to its online pre-payment menu. Order companionship, pay in Bitcoin Customers can now order up the companionship they desire and pay in bitcoin on Passion VIP's website. Clients simply contact the agency's receptionist to say they want to pay with bitcoin, confirm the booking times, and then send payment via Passion VIP's bitcoin address (Passion VIP's cryptographic public key) on its NSFW Bitcoin Escorts page. Its "Bitcoin Escorts" page also has a handy scannable QR code if clients want to speed up the transaction. The page also includes basic information about bitcoin transactions and links for people who want to learn more, or open an account. The savvy UK adult business explained, Clients who already hold bitcoins can use them immediately. Those who aren't familiar with the currency will find information on our website on how to buy and trade in bitcoins. Once the client's payment is processed, Passion VIP calls the client back with a confirmation and the date is set - with no one worrying about payment, theft or counterfeit on either side of the transaction. The workers also can't be forced to return the money even if under duress. It could also make it difficult for police to prove that sex was had as a result of a financial transaction. Additionally, with Bitcoin, clients don't run the risk of an odd-looking transaction from a foreign country appearing on their credit card bills. In this business model, it stands to reason that Bitcoin could make high-risk work such as escorting less dangerous and more businesslike. Passion VIP told ZDNet, There are several advantages for both escorts and clients. For clients the advantage is that it is totally anonymous. You could argue that cash is anonymous too, but not in the same way. For the escorts it's an easy an anonymous way to accept payment and unlike credit cards there are no chargebacks, which have been a huge problem for escorts and agencies in the past. It also means that escorts are not handling large amounts of cash, reducing the risk of theft or robbery. Few personal details are exchanged when using Bitcoins; it's simple and efficient and a safe method of payment. Passion VIP has a stable of fit male and female companionship workers, all available for in-house services or outcall visits - but the service is careful to state on its website, "Please note that this is not an offer for prostitution. Money exchanged is for time and companionship only." In the UK, the exchange of sexual services for money is legal - but public soliciting and owning or managing a brothel are crimes. For ordinary payment by cash or card, each Passion VIP escort has different rates on their individual profile pages. Bitcoin rates are higher. The agency's bitcoin rates list two separate categories distinguishing premium companionship from standard, with higher rates for more exclusive companions. The cost for one hour of a "Standard" lady's time is 2.5 BTC, 90 minutes is 3.75 BTC, a dinner date is 5 BTC, an overnight will cost you 14 BTC, and additional hours are 2 BTC each. One hour of an "Elite" lady's time is 2.75 BTC, 90 minutes is 4.75 BTC, a dinner date is 5.25 BTC, an overnight will cost you 15 BTC, and additional hours are 2.25 BTC each. At current Bitcoin exchange rates, that puts an hour with Standard companionship at $309.75 (£192.62), and $340.72 ( £211.88 ) for one hour of Elite time. In domestic currency, Passion VIP's Katarina is £150/hour, Mike is £120/hour, whereas Elite Alannah is £160. And with one bitcoin exchanging for 1 = $123.9 (£77.05), asking an Elite to spend the night will run a steep $1858.50. Like sex work and similar forms of paid companionship, the Bitcoin currency is controversial for a number of reasons. Both share an unstable market, covert operation and the need for relative anonymity, and neither are widely accepted as "legitimate" in their categories (work and currency, respectively). However, bitcoin is a lot younger than the "oldest profession" - the protocol was created in 2008 and the currency's network was in 2009. â??I think of bitcoin as the local currency of the Internet. As a local curency it reinforces the community weâ??re trying to build,â? Kahle said â?? Reed Sturtevant (@reedsturtevant) September 26, 2013 Bitcoin has been mildly popular as currency for adult online "cam" work in the past few years, where clients pay for live adult entertainment - usually shows or sexual interaction, and with individuals rather than agencies - performed via webcam. The most famous example is Reddit's NSFW community, Girls Gone Bitcoin (/r/girlsgonebitcoin, NSFW). In this subreddit forum, people - mostly girls - show skin while flashing a FirstBits payment address or QR-code where viewers can deposit their "appreciation" in Bitcoin. Since then, amateur couples on "Cam4BTC" and various other adult performers have posted to Girls Gone Bitcoin when they offer live online sex shows in exchange for bitcoins. LadyBytes, the female Reddit member who started Girls Gone Bitcoin said she wanted to start it to teach more women about bitcoin, and: (...) I also saw the potential for employment. Work anonymously... No taxes, no work visa? Yes please... She told Bitcoin Magazine, "A lot of people donâ??t know what Bitcoin is. My response to them: Get used to it, this is the future of porn."
Canadaâ??s hypocritical prostitution laws By Tim Denis http://www.wellandtribune.ca/2013/09/16/canadas-hypocritical-prostitution-laws
A new poll has found that 60% of Canadian men approve of decriminalizing prostitution, compared to just 38% of women. As a purely sexist proposition, that in and of itself shouldnâ??t come as a great shock. There were a few surprising things in this snapshot of our thoughts on Mrs. Warrenâ??s Profession, though. The survey found support for legal prostitution was higher among all Canadians over the age of 35 â?? much higher than the 18- to 34-year-olds. Sort of runs counter to the popular perception of a liberal youth growing more conservative as they age, doesnâ??t it? Support for prostitution was highest in Quebec (54%) and lowest in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (23%). The federal government had to deal with this thorny issue again in the past year and launched an appeal of the Ontario court ruling that struck down Canadaâ??s age-old prostitution laws. The age gap in this new study is interesting for a number of reasons. You would think that a younger generation would be more tolerant as it is about a number of current issues like pot use and same-sex marriage, yet the opposite seems true. We could, I suppose, chalk that up to the experience of age. The very experience that would know that what weâ??ve been doing all these years doesnâ??t work. That just adding more charges and jail time doesnâ??t do anything except drive the problem further underground where it becomes harder to police and much more dangerous for those involved. We have an extremely hypocritical set of laws surrounding the selling of sex in Canada. Prostitution is legal but making the deal for it is not. When arrested, the hookers generally get time and a record; the johns (who drive the demand) have the option of paying their way out of it by going to a weekend course and having their records expunged. Itâ??s another sign, though, that this generation has looked at their parentsâ?? liberalism, their parentsâ?? and grandparentsâ?? hippie-dippy past (to quote George Carlin) and found it wanting. So why is the older generation more tolerant? Itâ??s curious. Seems that the boomer â??make love not warâ? group has spawned a new generation that is more Glenn Beck than Walter Cronkite. And while we, the boomers, became somewhat more conservative as we got older, I wonder if this new crop of Alex P. Keaton devotees will get more Liberal as they approach middle age. Just curiousâ?¦. P.S. If you donâ??t know who Alex P. Keaton is, then you are the generation Iâ??m talking about.
More Harm Than Good By Maggie McNeill, The Honest Courtesan http://maggiemcneill.wordpress.com/2013/07/18/more-harm-than-good/
No people do so much harm as those who go about doing good. - Mandell Creighton Iâ??ve often written about how important allies are in the struggle for sex worker rights; itâ??s why I call for them to speak out every Friday the 13th. One of the reasons is that weâ??re an awfully small minority, and another is that we need third parties to fend off the inevitable circumstance ad hominem accusations: "â?¦weâ??re often accused of distorting facts to make ourselves look good, and no matter how assiduously we work to present a balanced view this is a natural and credible accusation against anyone who advocates for some issue which directly concerns her. Thatâ??s why allies are so important; itâ??s much harder for the prohibitionists to shout down people who donâ??t have a dog in the fight, but merely support prostitutesâ?? rights on moral grounds." I think male allies are especially important, because the majority of men have directly paid for sex at least once and a sizable minority do so regularly, yet one wouldnâ??t know it by listening to the public discourse; vocal male allies help to give other men the courage to speak out. Unfortunately, both male and female would-be allies tend to undermine our cause with depressing regularity. Some of them do this inadvertently, by failing to check their facts with sex workers and thereby buying into prohibitionist talking points such as the myth that â??sex traffickingâ? is a huge problem, the naïve belief that the police can be trusted to â??manageâ? sex workers, the lie that legalization increases â??traffickingâ?, the ill-considered notion that licensing and registration decrease exploitation or the demeaning canard that we have more diseases than other non-celibates. Some make good arguments against criminalization, but feel compelled to insist that they disapprove of sex work, or opine that we live an â??immoral lifestyleâ?, and theyâ??re only defending us on principle. And some even vomit out agency-negating poison like â??People donâ??t choose to become prostitutesâ? or â??they should go after the pimpsâ?. But even the ones who commit none of the more egregious errors and insults will often use the incredibly-insulting phrase â??selling their bodiesâ?; I recently saw an essay in which the writer (who was clearly pro-decriminalization) used the phrase â??rent out their bodies for sex.â? And because that incredibly stupid expression is so very common and so incredibly insulting to literally everyone, I think itâ??s high time we purge it from polite use, preferably with fire. My most succinct argument against the phrase was probably this one I made on a newspaper story some time ago, and would never have remembered had a reader not immortalized it on Tumblr and recently tweeted the link: "The claim that sex workers â??sell our bodiesâ? is not only logically absurd (I was a prostitute for years, but my body is still right here with me), but totally sexist because it is based on the notion that a womanâ??s sexuality is her entire worth. The belief behind this expression is that since a woman has nothing of value to offer except her sexuality, if she â??sellsâ? that she has â??sold herselfâ? and there is nothing left. The fact that anti-sex worker activists use this expression so often says a lot about them." This is of course the same pernicious and demeaning concept of a womanâ??s worth which lurks behind the horrible belief that rape is a â??fate worse than deathâ? from which a woman can never, ever recover. Those who prefer my mocking idiocy to getting sort of feministy over it may like this more outre demolition of the phrase from two months ago: "Itâ??s almost as though some people actually believe that after one transaction whores become spiritual beings (after all, when one â??sellsâ? something the buyer generally takes it with him when he leaves) who then, presumably, reincarnate like the Dalai Lama and return to the brothel to â??sellâ? their instantly-grown, identical new bodies again. One wonders what happens to all the old bodies, however; I reckon once the men are done with them, they flush them down the loo like unwanted goldfish or â??child sex slavesâ?." Now, my objections to the word â??sellingâ? donâ??t apply to the word â??rentingâ?, but the use of the word â??bodyâ? to mean â??servicesâ? conjures a whole host of issues on its own. The idea that sex requires only a womanâ??s body and not her mind is just as absurd as the â??sellingâ? part, and insults both whores and clients: whores because the very real talents and skills we bring to our craft is ignored, devalued and reduced to mere physical presence; clients because it essentially casts them as necrophiles or desperate men who can be wholly satisfied with inert dolls. Any woman who believes that men are satisfied with a girl who does little more than show up has some deep issues with men, and any man who believes itâ?¦well, letâ??s not go there. Itâ??s clear that neither of them has ever read a review of an escort who acts that way, and equally clear that such beliefs say far more about their own expectations (if male) and bedroom behavior (if female) than about the sex workers and clients they insult and demean by the use of such expressions. Allies, we really appreciate your wanting to help us, and Aphrodite knows we really need your help, especially these days when the crusade to exterminate us is running hotter than it has in a century. But if youâ??re going to spout prohibitionist propaganda, stop short of saying that our work is valid work, refuse to respect our agency and choices and use moronic expressions which perpetuate harmful, ignorant stereotypes about us, our clients and our associates, itâ??s probably better if you just go away and keep your mouth shut, because youâ??re doing more harm than good.
