Adviced needed, My leg in a Cast
mrrnice2 replied to someguy's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
As a person who has had significant crutch and wheelchair time in the past, a few suggestions. With the crutches, don't put weight on them with your armpits, ever. Use your hands to support your weight and in a couple of days they will toughen up. It will be more comfortable for you and the hands give you far more control. The motion or swing of your body once developed becomes an aide as momentum and physics play a role. Biggest caution of all is to watch out for water on most flooring surfaces. The rubber tips on water turn the crutch into a slide, immediately with no warning. A wheelchair presents its own issues, however for safety treasons may be a better option for you. Accessibility is always an issue, even in buildings that are supposedly accessible. Ramps are not always to standard, and the lip across a door frame becomes a major hurdle at times. Good luck and once you master the technique see an SP as a personal reward. Incentive. :) -
That does suck Steve, and we feel for you.

This Day in History - "Da Da Kanada"
mrrnice2 replied to a topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
I recall it so clearly but with a long lingering disappointment that I was one of the few Canadians that did not get to see it. I was at football practice. :( -
I have been fortunate in not having had to invest in expensive attire for my work career as usually simply wearing a dress shirt and tie or something casual was very appropriate. That being said there is a time and place for a dress suit and an initial investment in quality pays off not only in longevity, but as well, simply put, quality looks good. One more example from the real world that you get what you pay for.

Finally I have a word to contribute that I think was not introduced previously. I am laughing as I write this because a short while ago I wrote a note in the highlights of the day thread saying about helping someone finish getting their winter wood inside. An SP saw it and wrote me a note and used Wood as her subject heading. I knew what she was going to refer to but the subject heading brought the other meaning to mind. She is probably writing me now saying to get my mind out of the gutter. :) So, I contribute Wood.

I helped my brother to finish getting his winter wood inside. That always results in a great feeling of accomplishment. As well, it is only noon, the sun is shining and I am looking forward to the rest of my day. :)

Things that don't make sense
mrrnice2 replied to Emma Alexandra's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
What does not make sense is how an NFL player like Michael Vick can get two years in prison and an NFL suspension for being involved with dog fighting, (and NO I am not supporting that), yet other NFL players are caught with underage girls, carrying weapons, abusing their SO's and get no penalty at all, legal system or otherwise. There are a multitude of legal things that don't make any sense at all! -

Congratulations Gabriella. I always enjoy reading your posts as they vary so much - from well thought out comments on serious topics, to totally hilarious contributions, to poetry and erotic writing, and everything in between. Thanks for your Cerb contributions to us and for your help to me. -
Charitable Donations
mrrnice2 replied to Megan'sTouch's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
Good topic Megan and a good question. For many years I donated through payroll, automatic deductions to the United Way. In the Maritimes at least, United Way is the cover organization for many of the charities that used to canvas independantly. Since retiring, I have moved from that to more local charities and they tend to vary. Heart and Stroke and Canadian Cancer Society still have community volunteers that canvas the neighbourhood so those are always automatic donations. One SP that I have met 'adopts' a family each Christmas and I have always left her a donation toward that. Another I left a donation to go to POWER in Ottawa. Actually, at this time, based on where I am at right now, I am considering POWER or a local womens shelter as areas that I might contribute to. There are an infinite number of worthwhile organizations and causes, so it is a difficult, but important decision. I shall be interested to see responses from others here. -
Lee - Listen to Angela's advice and heed the sign. Only a few selected close friends know what happened to me in a former life when I ignored it. :)

Congratulations Angela. Remember, you have a standing invitation. :)

Happy Birthday to Surf Nazis Must Die!!!
mrrnice2 replied to Andee's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
Happy Birthday Surf Nazi from the East coast. -
I started the day with a Things that Suck contribution but can finish it with this. We did not have much of a summer but fall is coming in at 24 degrees, nothing but sun and I picked about 8 more liters of blueberries off of my bushes. Love it.

I clearly recall in an earlier thread that you indicated THAT exact thing as an unfulfilled fantasy, AND you did have a holiday from here for a few days, and..... so I shall say TRUE. :) I am off shortly on my 3rd cross Canada trip in 2011.
-
Good luck to you Emily with your move. No I am not biased in the least of course, as Toronto is a wonderful city to visit, as are Montreal and Ottawa, but the Maritimes as you already know is a place onto its own. I also know that as long as you stay with this business, and even afterwards, that you will be surrounded here by both men and women who are wonderful people and who will welcome you with open arms. Toronto and your life there you will always treasure, but Toronto's loss is our gain, and you will have a life filled with new and different experiences to look forward to. Welcome to your new home. :)

My Record Player... yay and nay!
mrrnice2 replied to a topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
(Part of me just wants someone to say, I have an old amp and speakers I'm not using and would love to make your day  YAY!!!) Oh Sara, we have to talk. Records yes - you like goldie oldies? An amp, I think so, let me look in my attic. I'll be in touch, or let me know a bit more about what you would need to hook it up. -
Going out on this gorgeous morning to do something as a favor for a friend and parking in a parking lot, all by myself. While inside a 3/4 ton truck backs into the side of my virtually new car caving in the whole back door. Grrrrr.. But the sun is beautiful.:)

Happy Birthday Isabella - To a lady who brings sunshine with her wherever she goes.

Meg, I will say false to that one. Seems to me you have written about being shy, so THAT would be very hard for a shy girl to do. But then, incentive counts too. :) My first ever trip outside of Canada only happened when I was 52 years old to the Dominican for a winter holiday.

What are some phrases or sentences that when you hear them, you KNOW that what they REALLY mean? Two examples from me. As a teacher I knew that when a parent came in and said, " I know that my son is not an angel, but .....", that as soon as I heard those words I was dealing with a totally non-supportive parent. Or, the worst. When you read on a box the words. "Some assembly required". It really means that to put that BBQ together or worse still, the Barbie Boat, that it will consume many hours of your time.

Waking up to a forecast of clearing and sunny and warm and it is still seriously raining at 4 pm! And, spending over 4 hours shopping did not help a bit.
