For many of us working in offices, we produce work by a due date. But for those of us working in Ottawa, the term "Deadline" is often used to all sauces. But what is really a "Deadline"? The true origin of the word Deadline seems to be debated, but it first appeared in 1864 in the States, in a report about a military prison made by Col. D. T. Chandler and also in another report by Confederate captain Walter Bowie. This reports were made after prison inspections which describes the Dead-Line as: "On the inside of the stockade and twenty feet from it there is a dead-line established, over which no prisoner is allowed to go, day or night, under penalty of being shot." While today, the word should be used to express a date by which, if we miss it, has dire results: failing a class, not getting a diploma, loss of revenue if we don't submit a contract or a bill in time, etc... Of course, where i work, it's all deadlines with no real dire results ... so few deadlines and a lot of due dates ..... :-)

Favorite things to do in Montreal
Mister T replied to Cleo Catra's topic in General Discussion Area - all of Canada
Ah yes, shopping, especially clothes. Clothes shopping in Montreal is much better in Montreal than here in Ottawa. Simons, on St-Catherine always has a good selection and good prices for both men's and women's clothes. Got some great pieces (both for me and a lady friend) very recently. "Promenades Cathedrale", an underground shopping mall, under a small church, has LOTS of small stores, and you can get easily lost in meandering around. St-Denis street also has lots of nice little stores. Two that i like (between sherbrooke and the Square St-Louis): Rio-x20, a "punkish" store that carries lots of shoes, and serves as my supply of Doc Martens shoes. On the more fun side, and completly related to this board, there is a store (still on st-denis) called "La Capoterie" - yes, it's a condom store for those who are familiar with the french term ... ;-) -

Couldn't agree more with you Nathalie. Well put. With a first meeting, will we connect well? Especially when we've been communicating via PMs, chat, notes on profile's wall etc ... well, that makes the first visit ... whorthwile (you know the feeling that you "cant wait"?) Even with ladies i have met, i always get the "jitters" .... seeing the smile light up when the door is opened, the following hello, hug and kiss, the catching up, seeing how we met how the flow of things will go .... That feeling is always there.

I was listening to radio over the weekend and stumbled on a bit on history. As they went on, they were talking about the conquest of the far west. As pilgrims went across the southwest deserts, they realised they needed rugged clothes to last the elements. Levi Strauss, a german emigrant, (levi being an englisised name), found cloth from France that was used for sails. It came from the city of Nimes, which is a landlocked city. At the time, the city of Genoa - Gênes in French - was the major port being used to ship out of Europe. As Levi received his first shipment of cloth, the box only indicated in french " de Nimes, bleu, Gênes" (city of Origin, color of the product, and the sending Port, as usual on shipments at the time). So in the receiving port in the states, it got "anglisized-pronounced in english" as "Denim Blue Jean". So there you have it, the origin of the name of the pants we love so much.

I have been to Chez Parée, on Stanley street, right of St-Catherine street in the "downtown core". Its a reputed club, smallish and well set-up. The ladies are gorgeous ;-). Dances are less costly than in Ottawa (if you plan any). I found the staff friendly, mind you i arrived well dressed (suit jacket, good shirt etc..). Plan on having some small bills on you (fivers), as access to the booth, if you choose to go, costs 5$. If you tip the guy the guy that shows people to table, you'll likely have a good seat. A dancer friend worked once in a while to the Kamasutra, who is i'm told the competition to Chez Parée. Kamasutra is on St-Dominique, between Sherbrooke and Des Pins. I havent had the chance to go there but i tend to trust her opinion on this. Both clubs have their website as well. Do not hesitate to PM me and i'll try to answer your questions as best i can.
