Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Original by Leonard Cohen - which is absolutely amazing on it's own!

Elwood - Sundown

Original by Gordon Lightfoot - I think it's interesting to note the song is rumored to be about Cathy Smith his girlfriend around the time he wrote this who was later sentenced for delivering John Belushi a lethal dose of Cocaine and Heroin, this has not been confirmed by Lightfoot.

George Winston - Riders on the Storm

Original - The Doors -some of you may have read my post Riders on the Storm, it's one of my favorite songs and I listen to this classical arrangement almost as often as I do The Doors version.

Nouvelle Vague - Making Plans for Nigel

Original by XTC - Nouvelle Vague is a cover band, I could have chosen any of their songs but was in a "nigel" mood today, they have some very interesting covers though. There seems to be a ton of bands that make a successful living off 'loungey' covers.

Alanis Morrissette - My Humps

Original by Black Eyed Peas - one of the most ironic covers I've seen, just brilliant! I was never really an Alanis fan but when I see something like this I realize that the hamster is running in his wheel.

Camp Freddy - Good Times Bad Times

Original by Led Zepplin - Camp Freddy is a cover band it's core members are Dave Navarro, Billy Morrison, Matt Sorum, Donovan Leitch and Chris Chaney (I had to look that up!) and they have special guests for each show as well.

Cat Power is amazing! I love the man in black's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "hurt". And pretty much everything on A Perfect Circle's Emotive album, especially the cover of Lennon's "imagine". And Apocalyptica. They are gods of the cello.

Yep, someone sent me that before. I prefer the Alanis one but I know a few people that preferred the Peaches version (and more than a few that preferred the original). :)

I can't believe no one has mentioned Joan Jett doing Crimson and Clover yet, I lovelovelove that song, the original and her cover.

Also:

Marilyn Manson's cover of Personal Jesus, even though I'm not really a fan of his.

Because the Night by 10,000 Maniacs (Patti Smith originally, also amazing)

Lily Allen's version of Britney Spears' Womanizer is pretty awesome.

Mr. Tambourine Man and Turn, Turn, Turn - The Byrds

And the entire 'Girl Versions' album by Emm Gryner (especially Pour Some Sugar on Me, if you haven't heard it GO NOW!), and Tori Amos' Strange Little Girls album.

Also I second whoever it was that nominated The Sundays version of Wild Horses, soooo wonderful!

Can I also nominate some of the WORST covers?

Britney Spears - I Love Rock and Roll

Madonna - American Pie

aaaaaaaaand CELINE DION doing Shook Me All Night Long. Really, did this have to happen??!!

Thats all I've got for now :-P

I have a confession... my grandparents on my dad's side were two of the most disagreeable people on the face of the planet.... their names??? Clifford and Clover... so that song became their anthem!!!

Yup, used to get the SST catalogue and spend all my money at Shake Records.

Vast improvements? They changed "Goodbye Earl" from aural torture into a great tune. I liked what they did with Sloop John B too, starting it with "Teenage Lobotomy". Something they didn't improve on? This.

Granted, *anyone* is better than Rod Stewart

What's this now? Someone who's heard of Husker Du? (I can't do the little umlauts)

I was tempted to put a few Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, but since everything they do is a cover, I elected to leave them out.

Oh and because it just came to me, are there any covers that you feel are better than the original?
