I've had quite a few crappy cars. Some crappier than others. If I were to think back on all the crappy cars out there that I owned, I'm damn lucky to be alive.

 

I think it's a contest between a Pontiac Phoenix and a Ford Capri. Both tried their very best to kill me on a daily basis. The Phoenix carburator linkage would freeze up in the Winter and stick (on full throttle). So, I had to ride with both feet on the brake pedal just to travel at highway legal speeds in my neighborhood!

 

The Capri (or Crapi) had a similar problem. When it started (rarely), it wouldn't stop - literally. The brakes were an option on this car....as was the paint. Frequently, the suspension would bottom out just when you needed it most. I could turn it off, and bless it's diseased little black soul - it wouldn't F**king stop until 15min later. Which was ok, 'cuz, if you wanted to stop in at a convenience store, you didn't have to shut the engine off...not that you could.

 

These machines didn't kill me, and yeah, I suppose that makes me stronger (or luckier) - what was your crappiest car?

I must say, I've been lucky in my (not) choice of vehicles.

Out of the two cars I've driven regularly, both have been lifesavers in their own little ways.

My parents' 95 Ford Aerostar, which I drove after my first year of university, was a total boat, but its boatness made it awesome when I fell asleep at the wheel on the way home from a government meeting. I rolled it over 5 times at 100kmh and came away with nothing but a little scar from the shattered windshield on my knuckle.

My dear Lurch was a 95 Ford Escort. He lasted me 3 years, during which time I went to Banff and back 3 times, with numerous trips to Regina and wherever else I felt like taking him. The muffler was burnt, the driver's window would not go up without an unworldly amount of "encouragement" (read, literally pushing it up while you leaned on the power window, and it made a horrible protesting noise), and the cruise control was broken, which was less than optimal considering I drove it long-distance rather often. However, this car stood up to a fair accident too...I totalled Lurch and came away clean but for a decent scar (mostly still a scab) from the airbag deployment.

I remember when Hyundai first came out. I was station out in Esquimalt, 1990. A buddy on ship bought a new one, can't remember the model now and every time we got back into port my buddy would find new rust starting on his car. We litterally watched it rust away over the 2.5 years I was there.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. When the Hydundai Pony first came out in the 80s, they were dreadful. I knew two people who owned them and said they literally "fell apart.

 

I think they've come a long way in the last 25 years!

the first Lada. When it came out, my folks thought supporting their cousins in Russia would help keep the big nukes from falling. Their mistake, we should have nuked the factory and the asshole who thought bringing Lada's to Canada was a great idea. I went from a souped up 62 Pontiac to a Lada to help minimize the speeding tickets I was getting in high school. Certainly did that, can't get speeding tickets when the piece of crap can't even get out of the driveway. Moved out, bought a 69 Olds Cutless 442 convertable, got lots of "I can't believe you used to drive that piece of crap Lada!!"

PS: you could not make out in a Lada, seats were virtually bolted into place. Still have bruises......

I had a late 70's Mercury Zephyr that had a hood that rusted all along its seams. One day while driving on the 401 the wind got in between and it completely separated sending the hood and sending it up high enough to block my visibility nearly completely (thank god it didn't separate completely and go flying onto the highway).

 

That was my last American car and since then I've owned only Japanese cars.

The worst car I owned was the 1989 Ford Rustang, I think that car must of liked the mechanic at Canadian Tire or he did things to it so it would come back for repair every week. I would have been better to invest $300 to $400 a month on a new car for 5 years instead of trying to keep it alive. I called that car William (Bill), it was a surprise every week with Bill. The manifold, brakes ( front one week and rear 3 weeks later ), gas cylinder for the hatchback, battery, shocks, transmission, brackets here and there, door hinges, alternator etc... the list is so big.

I have kept all the receipt and when I took it to the scrap yard I had invested more money into that car the what it was worth brand new.

The second car was a Datsun B 210.

Hyundai Elantra...brand new (about 4 months old) and the engine went on it. It spent 8 weeks in the shop. When I brought it home, it caught on fire in my garage!!!! I had my friend help push it out and we sat there and watched it burn! Thank god we were in a country setting!

I hope the dealership gave you a discount on your next Hyundai...actually that's a pretty good business model to have. The car self destructs every 4-5 months and somebody, somewhere is going to have a guaranteed customer.

It's a a good thing everyone was okay. I've owned 2 Elantras and loved them both. I certainly hope Hyundai went out of there way to make things good with you. Then again how often does a big company do anything for us.

I see no mentioning of Toyota. It has its serious recall in recent months. Looks like the European and Honda are the safer ones. You do have to cough out more dough for these though. For safety, it's totally worth it.

This is soooooooooo true! It's best for Meg to stay indoor. Even the Ottawa winter can't guarantee car can operate with Meg in it.

Back to the thread. As for Toyota...

 

An ex-boyfriend of mine had an old Toyota pick-up truck that eventually started to rust. We figured out what he used to do the repairs to the floor, when my mother couldn't find any of her aluminium cookie sheets anymore.

OMG -I had a 1977 Datsun B-210 - forgot about that. It was a three speed - my first standard. I had it when I lived in Los Angeles back in the early 80s. It didn't have air conditioning and it rode really rough, but I thought it looked kinda cool. The clutch went on it once when I was way out visiting someone south of LA. Luckily I broke down across the street from a garage and the mechanic came over and got it over the place. It was late, they were closing up for the day. I was 2 hours from where I lived. Long story short, I ended up sleeping at the owner of the garage's house and the next day they got me on my way. His wife was actually pretty cool about letting me stay. Can't believe I took a chance that they weren't some kind of weirdos. Crazeee!

My first car was a Dodge Omni (hatch back). The odometer only had 5 didgets. They didn't even try to pretend that the car might make 100 000 Km!

The worst car I had ever had was a Ford Fuckus opps... Ford Focus. Engine died on me one day. Thank god I was close to home. Worst, worst car ever, ever, ever.

 

Another car I drove ( took over the lease for a year from a relative while they were working in another country) was a 2004 Hyundai Accent. Another piece of junk. Good thing it was on a lease.

 

Also had problems with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Transmission problems only after a short time driving it.

 

The best cars I've ever owned were a 1990 Honda CRX, a 1992 Honda Accord 2 door and a 2000 Honda Civic. I've also owned a 1998 BMW 318i and an older model Porsche and never had problems.

I test drove a Hyundai Stellar from a dealership one time. Got about 2 blocks down the road and smoke started appearing from behind the dashboard. I pulled over and had to roll down the windows to get rid of the cloud. The sales guy had the stones to tell me that was normal!.:roll:

 

Another piece of crap was a VW Rabbit diesel. After the test drive with the salesman, I parked in the dealership parking lot, got out of the car, closed the door and then the horn started up and wouldn't shut off. It was a nice lime green colour too.

Hey Angela. I went through several clutches in my B 210. It's not like I was rough on the car it just liked to eat clutches.

I've been driving Toyotas for 30 years and they are by far the most reliable and safe vehicles I've ever encountered. I owned a Civic in the late eighties that the transmission went at 75K. Had a Datsun (now Nissan) that rusted out badly but my little Toyotas, of which I have owned a Camry, a Tercel, several Corollas, an Echo and a Sienna have been excellent vehicles.

 

If you check all recalls you'll discover that all major car companies have had them.

 

My crappiest car was an English 1957 Ford Zephyr....standard tranny (three on the tree), always in the shop and difficult to get parts. I bought in 1972 and sold it for junk 6 months later.

Of not so sweet memories, the American Motors Hornet. That car was drinking gas like hell, and even the horn was not working.

I had a pos vw rabbit turbo diesel too

Bought it when I was young and dumb

Turbo equated to me at the time speed

Problem with it was I bought it in the summer...diesels didn't like (at that time, don't know about engine technology now) winter...many many times I couldn't get the car started due to the cold

And the oil pressure light kept going off. Every time I took it in, mechanic would say, oh, just a fuse...and "fix" it. Finally, in exasperation (after a few years of this) I took the pos in, told them to just disconnect the oil pressure light/buzzer...mechanics response, we can't do that, it indicates a problem"....well duh, why didn't you fix the problem to begin with

Turned out most oil spraying out, very little getting in the engine...and took it to another dealership...they said needs new engine

Fortunately they verified with the first dealership about all the times my pos was sent in for repair...VW Canada replaced the engine free...I just paid the labour...not the best, but not the worst outcome either

But no more vw's for me
