Hijacking threads....not cool

Recommended Posts

Guest s******ecan****

Since this subject came up on another thread I'll post a seperate one. Hijacking threads is a problem on most forums or discussion boards. I truly believe that in the vast majority of cases the hijacking is not malicious, often its just someone's attempt at humour or someone inserts a bit of unrealted information in a post which leads to a reply and so on and so on.....

I'm not advocating hijack police (thread marshals? lol) just that everyone try to be aware of the hijacker in us all (I confess to having done this myself).

I think its also particularly important in certain types of threads. For example hijacking a lady's schedule or announcement should be absolutely off limits as this is her/his livelyhood.

Other examples are threads where someone is seeking advice or feedback about a situation that is important to them (after all they took the time to create a thread).

Some hijacking is just going to happen but maybe we could just all agree to be more sensitive, and also be open to recieving a gentle reminder from anyone about a "hijack in progress" so we don't have to ever escalate this to the level of the Mods.

Hopefully this thread won't be hijacked

I agree with your post, but in responding to a lady's announcement, should not be absolutely off limits. Men like to hear a touring lady is coming to their city, and should feel freely to express their pleasure to her.

I know the main concern why this is brought up,and it has happened a couple of times with a member, that goes off in another direction other than the topic of thread discussion, now that I agree with.

The following post which Cleo has announced some great information to us in Ottawa. We should have the opportunity to comment or in fact congratulate that person, it is showing conviction, care and humor.

Yes I have done it so as everyone else, and in fact the ladies do not mind it,as it bumps their thread and is viewed more often, and that itself is a great business venture for all parties involved.

And I love all of the comments in my announcement thread! I think the OP though was referring more to someone taking over an announcement to turn it into something completely different - like if someone went in to my announcement thread and started talking about how much they hate the east end or something, and turned in into a conversation like that. Because that would suck. But posting pictures and talking about boobies is fine (with me at least!)

So this one time at band camp....

Haha, sorry, I'm just kidding.

I agree with you guys on the hijacking of threads. However, I do personally enjoy when random, hilarious banter ensues from one of my threads, but that's me. I think maybe it also depends on the severity of a topic maybe...

I'm not saying it's right, but I'm sure that my randomness has hijacked a few threads before and I never realize if I do it. I don't think some people do it on purpose, it is annoying, but I know I'm responsible for doing it unintentionally at times. I think it might stem from people responding to one post, rather than the theme of the whole thread.

However, on that note... I'd much rather have my thread hijacked, than my plane. ;)

I agree Cleo, but I really have not seen that happening a whole lot lately. If the member steers off course to the original topic/announcement at hand that is of course not cool.

I think we've all done it. But a reminder to everyone to keep it in check is a great idea, so hopefully people won't get offended if it's brought up in a thread!

I do nor know exactly what Scott had in mind with this thread. But I suspect that the examples Pete, Sara and Cat brought up would not fall under hijacking.

To bring up a hypothetical example of hijacking would be a thread devoted to the beauty of female breasts, and a poster starts to rant about the adequacy (or lack thereof) of Canadian men. This example is purely fictional and is only meant to illustrate the meaning of hijack.

Excellent example below, and I did not think the sample I posted above would fall under hijacking, thanks Wellie.;)

I know you can't resist kittens, Cleo:

Getting back to the topic at hand...yes, I have noticed a lot more hijacking lately.

The only thing that comes to mind is: self-abosrbed!

I completely agree, I don't mean it should be off limit to respond, or comment, what I was referring to would be to hijack her thread and get the subject of her tour totally off track.

An example could be a lady posts her schedule, somehow it becomes a debate about hotel policies or a competition to see who can find the most outrageous seagull photo and the next thing you know the thread is five pages of comments that have nothing to do with the lady or her tour.

Seagulls are off topic?

I agree totally, and probably guilty of allowing myself to comment on a side track. What I find myself doing sometimes is replying to an offtopic comment, for example on another board someone is looking for a specific body type, age range for an sp. The OP is given a couple of suggestions. One sp pops in to say thanks for the reco. Then HighJackGuy pops in to say how that particular sp has restrictions he didn't care for and he has been able to see other sps for less that her hourly rate. What he does not do is provide the names of these other sps, or if they meet the criteria the OP was asking about. What he did do was highjack the thread into a disussion of a particular sps rates/services and how (even tho he booked 2 appts with her) these rates/services were not to his taste lol.

Having had this happen recently turning my 1 post ad into a 5 page debate as to whether my new policies for new clients were right or wrong...I completely agree. If someone wants to contribute positively to a lady's ad posting, thats fine, and yes, gets it the welcomed attention it deserves...however negative debates in a lady's ad do not do anything in her favor, even if it is bumped to the top of the page.

I do agree with this thread... and will not highjack it. I promise. Even though I do like toast and boxer shorts... where were we... ooohhhhh yes... the thread.

A couple of really valid points have been raised. I do think that a provider's thread is sacred, that is in this respectful environment, if contributions are to be made either in support or as an humourous aside, it should be done. I certainly have not been immune to adding a few points here and there.

For the provider thread, in my humble opinion, if there is a glaring error or omission, communication should be done by PM rather than pointing out the mistake as a response. No one wants to be made to look like an idiot in their own thread (present company excepted.) Everyone likes good-natured fun, but no one likes to feel the fool.

On other threads, we all run the risk of twisting something that started out wonderful or meaningful and compromising it by adding our own personal tastes. That is a risk that we do take when launching a thread; the fear that it will spin out of control into a deplorable debate that splits the board.

The solution? Bring it back. Get to the original point. If you feel the need to get tangential, create a new thread.... this is a discussion board. You can reference the offending post by copying the thread or you can merely copy and paste the text that has your hackles raised (oooooooh I have been waiting to use the term "hackles" for such a long time... but I digress.)

See... I can comment on a thread without pictures!!!!

Shit... can't ...be.... done

Where did you find that pic, Old Dog? But I digress.

I understand the concept of hijacking, of course, and the points raised here, but threads evolve, and go in unsuspected directions that don't necessarily correspond with the original poster's intentions. That's the nature of conversation, especially one involving lots of participants.

Does the original poster "own" the thread? No, threads are thrown open as an invitation to talk, and talk has its own dynamics.

I do agree that sp announcements are not the place for debates and random discussion, but I have trouble thinking of general postings as liable to being hijacked. We're a community that talks to each other, in unpredictable ways, and that's good.

I agree with cato. But I also think that cerb is supposed to be a positive supportive place. To me turning a positive post into negativity is just rude. I also believe that some people( not all) hide behind humor. If you have nothing nice to say just don't say it. It's simple to me. Not that I don't like a good joke. I also have to agree that what happened to Annessa was just wrong. As she has always presented herself as a classy woman and escort. When you hijack threads that people put out it is very unwelcoming. Maybe we would have more participation from new members. If we could all voice our opinion in a positive way. Remembering to have an open mind. Also remembering that it take all kinds to run this world. Just because you may not agree with the topic, means you have to turn it into something else or even be what I call catty.

I have not had time to read all the threads but I have a good idea of what is going on. I just need to say a few things..

1) NOT ALL OUR MEMBERS ARE FLUENT IN ENGLISH. I am saying this as some of the members misunderstand things and don't really have a grasp on slang

2) LOTS OF NEW MEMBERS. Many of us have been using these boards for 10+ years and easily forget that a learning curve exists with new members (Especially those who are not computer savvy) Forum etiquette is not something everyone knows so please instead of FLAMING someone for hijacking a thread take the time to explain to them what they did wrong. I have found the 9 our of 10 times the thread hijacker has NO IDEA what they did wrong.

3) UPHOLD THE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY. Have some compassion, Patience and good will goes a long way

Finally... some of our members over the years have been a little eccentric, some are very grounded and some are very "normal" (and I am struggling for a better word than normal or average as that could be offensive).

What I am getting at is... when you mix all these people together you are going to see clashes in personalities. Your going to see people with mental instabilities, your going to see people with language barriers, alpha's, passive people, clicky groups of people, etc... but we all have a common bond and that is what everyone needs to focus on.

Be nice to each other, accept the differences and instead of flaming someone for doing something wrong.. help them if you can, teach them what they are doing wrong... help them understand.

For some people they just don't learn these things easily... and attacking them is not going to help matters in ANY WAY.

Either ignore them or when they do something wrong click the REPORT THIS icon and ask me to speak to them. If what they are doing is disruptive I will speak with them.

Eventually I will ask them to stop posting in the discussions area's and to just read the site as they are usually unknowingly disrupting the site.

If you flame them, call them out, complain about them in public, yell at them, etc... your not helping and your not being very nice. That is not what this community we have is about right?

Very well put mod. Nice to read comments coming from your perspective.

While I am farly new to this forum, I am not new to the world of other

Online forums. Other forums (car, investment, sports etc.)

can get downright nasty toward certain members.

But I have been impressed with the sense of "patience" the members of this

board have shown toward the "HiJacker". I don't really think

she has been flamed...not like she would be on other forums.

Congrats fellow members on keeping it "Nice".
