International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers -- Halifax

There will be a public vigil for missing and murdered sex workers at Grand Parade, Halifax, Friday 17 December 2010, at 6:00 pm.

 

Organized by Stepping Stone and sponsored by the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women. Linda Carvery will be performing.

 

December 17 is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. This event will be honouring sex workers from Halifax who have gone missing or been murdered. Since 1985, there have been at least 17 victims.

I was working but drove by about 7:30 looked like 70-100 people maybe.

ATV Evening News aired a brief interview with Rene Ross, filmed during the Vigil. Based on what could be seen on-camera, 2T2T's estimate sounds about right.

?We wanted to come together and send a message to the community that sex-trade workers are people too and they?re our mothers, daughters and friends.? Ross said. ?As violence continues to escalate, and the stigma remains, we want to come out?and show everybody that sex workers are people who are deserving of the same rights.?
