CBC unveils online preview of Ottawa "human library" project Posted by Trevor Pritchard on Monday, January 16, 2012 CBC Ottawa has launched this stylish interactive portal to showcase the forthcoming "human library" project that will be unveiled later this month in the city. The Jan. 28 event is being co-organized by the Ottawa Public Library, the CBC, and the Canadian War Museum. It's the first time a human libraryâ??which allows visitors to "borrow" people from different walks of life and have them tell their storiesâ??has been put on in Ottawa. Or as HumanLibrary.org defines it: Visitors to a Human Library are given the opportunity to speak informally with â??people on loanâ?; this latter group being extremely varied in age, sex and cultural background. The Human Library enables groups to break stereotypes by challenging the most common prejudices in a positive and humorous manner. It is a concrete, easily transferable and affordable way of promoting tolerance and understanding. The first human library was organized in Denmark in 2000 as a way to raise awareness about violence. Subsequent events have taken place in 27 countries, including Canada, on different scales. The Toronto Public Library hosted a human library in 2011, with some 40 residentsâ??including a police officer, a bullied student, and Toronto Star columnist Catherine Porterâ??serving as books. The Ottawa event will include potential conversations with a Haiti refugee, a sex worker, an OC Transpo driver, and some yet-to-be-determined individuals. CBC Ottawa will be airing clips from some of the "human books" on All in a Day and Ottawa Morning over the next two weeks â??conversations you can preview by visiting the portal they've put together. For more information on when and where the human library is taking place, visit the OPL's page here.
