nacho 100 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 I'm not sure if this is the right place for this question, but I can't find a Winnipeg specific discussion area. I want to get some Crown Condoms when I get to town on Friday. Are they sold in drug stores? sex shops? or general merchandise stores like Walmart? Sorry Mod's if this is in the wrong place, but after I learn the answer, feel free to delete the whole thread. Thanks a lot.
mod 135640 Report post Posted May 15, 2008 No, this is fine. This is the recommendations and discussions area for Winnipeg so you are in the right spot to ask a question like this.

Elle 1961 Report post Posted June 2, 2008 I hope you're not planning on using those hobbying. Those things break like crazy. They used to give em out at the local clinics, but then they switched to other brands.

Elle 1961 Report post Posted June 3, 2008 That's hardly an endorsement of their efficacy. According to AIM medical, an org. responsible for maintaining records of std testing, the porn industry has about a 7% HIV infection rate at any given time, and about a 30% infection rate for Chlamydia. The reason they use these condoms is because they are so thin, you can hardly see they're wearing one on camera. Edit: AIM's website is down right now, so I can't access the page where I got those stats from, but this is a link to an interview with Dr. Sharon Mitchell, AIM's founder where she discusses the STD rates they have http://www.courttv.com/talk/chat_transcripts/2001/0723mitchell.html
halfbelgian 101 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 I wasn't making any claim about their efficacy. I would be grateful to find where you get your information about their quality as my googling of "condom testing" yielded no useful results in this area. Thanks for the link, it's a very illuminating interview. Interestingly she characterizes the rates of infection in the adult movie industry (2001) as: A very small percentage. Less than 7% HIV, and 12-28% STDs. (my emphasis) And further: Court TV Host: Those are all pretty high percentages, though? Sharon Mitchell: Not when you consider that 700 people per month in the San Fernando Valley are working with each other. So perhaps in this view, considering the risk of infection, the condoms being used are pretty effective. On a related issue, when Consumers Reports tested condoms in 2005 all major brands looked at were found to be reliable(Crown brand weren't tested it seems) but the worst were the ones given out free by Planned Parenthood in the U.S. There is some criticism of the testing methods as not simulating "real world" experience. I'm sure volunteers wouldn't have been difficult to find. ;)
Elle 1961 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 She does seem to be down playing it. Personally I find those stats frightening and reflecting a rather blase attitude towards STDs in the industry, considering that the Nevada brothels have at least as much F*#$ing going on at them, and they have never had a single case of HIV transmission since they started testing in 86, and other STD infections are seldom (no more than 4 or 5 a year). halfbelgian 101 Report post Posted June 4, 2008 Thanks Elle and a source for that info would be welcome. It might be said that the brothels would have more of a reason to down play infection rates than the adult film industry as they have to attract customers to them. An old adage is there are "lies, damn lies and statistics". IMHO stats about rates of infection are only useful as a comparative tool, so per capita/per activity as it were, how does the rate in the porn industry compare to the general public for example. I'd be interested to know if there's any research in this area. And I'd still like to know your source for the unreliability of the crown condoms if you are able to share. nacho 100 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 And I'd still like to know your source for the unreliability of the crown condoms if you are able to share. Me too!! I haven't ordered any yet, but still plan to. A great many of the hobbyists in Montreal swear by them. Male and Female. Breakage factor? Need more proof I guess. A large number of Montreal hobbyists swear by Crowns, and in the threads I've read and the folks I've talked to haven't reported any higher than average breakage. I still plan to order some, and of course if there is objection from the lady, I'd use her preference. But, your response, Elle, does provoke more research. Thanks for your reply. PistolPete 61421 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Interesting discussion, never came across Crowns...have you heard of Kimono..they are also ultra thin can be found in sex shops
halfbelgian 101 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Interesting discussion, never came across Crowns...have you heard of Kimono..they are also ultra thin can be found in sex shops Yeah they are even thinner than the Crown's. The reviews I read were pretty positive but mentioned lots of lube was needed. The Crown "Skinless" ones got close to universal praise from consumers on www.condomdepot.com with the proviso that perhaps more lube than other types might be needed as well. C**** C***l 155 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Personally, I'm a huge fan of atlas condoms both on clients and toys...they are very thin and do require more lube...but Koloss Vitalub is awesome...my favourite anyway....and made in Canada....as for the crown condoms, I am going to order some to check out...it's always nice to be able to offer a choice :D
nacho 100 Report post Posted June 11, 2008 Way to go Syndee, on site research!! I'm ordering mine today as well. Looking forward to comparing notes. Thanks for heads up on the lube. Is that really tasty flavored lube good for this purpose too. Can't remember the name of it, but it's really cool stuff. Can't find it in the lower 48, so I may have to import some next trip up. Oh on the crowns. If it hasn't been pointed out. condom depot is $5.99/dz. condomainia 11.99/doz. DUH
nacho 100 Report post Posted August 21, 2008 Just thought I'd revive this thread for a bit and to pass on some personal research. Crowns are good! I like 'em a lot! My lady liked the pretty pink color and I thought they are for sure more sensitive. I got mine at condomdepot.com where they are twice as cheap as condomania.com. Discreet wrapper and mailing was free.
