EDMONTON â?? A petite woman in pink plaid shorts and white tennis shoes approaches the Jeepâ??s window. Sheâ??s sweet and polite. Sheâ??s also limping.

Kari Thomason sits in the driverâ??s seat and chats with the limping woman. Theyâ??re friendly: Thomason compliments the womanâ??s new hairstyle before asking about her leg. The woman, who works as a street-level sex worker, said a man she was with became angry when he ran out of drugs and attacked her.

At one time, the woman might have been willing to report the â??bad dateâ? to police so charges could be laid. But Thomason, co-ordinator of Edmonton sex worker outreach organization SNUG, said reporting has become a lot less common since a new federal prostitution law came into effect in December 2014.

â??They donâ??t want to report to the cops like they used to â?¦ theyâ??re fearful of johns coming back to finish the job,â? Thomason said.
