Multiple people charged following Calgary prostitution stings

Thirty-six people have been charged following two prostitution stings in Calgary.

Police say the first operation took place over four days in March and targeted the consumers of street sex trafficking on known problem strolls in the Beltline and Forest Lawn industrial area.

A total of 32 people were charged with obtaining sexual services for consideration over the course of the sting.

The second four-day operation took place at the end of June and saw police target offenders attempting to purchase sexual services online from underage women.

Four individuals were arrested during the operation and each were charged with one count of obtaining or communicating in any place for the purposes of attaining sexual services from a minor.


In a release issued Tuesday, police described prostitution as a â??complex issueâ? that requires a collaborative approach among law enforcement and social service agencies.

Police say itâ??s estimated that 90 to 95 per cent of prostitution occurs indoors, facilitated by the Internet.
