I want to move to Whitehorse or Yellowknife, have wanted to for years now. But the rental market scares me. There is nowhere to live, it seems. Do I have this wrong? Is it possible that the housing market is really that impenetrable? Does anyone know? thanks! xoxoxoxo Winter Lover ps I should clarify: I've searched every rental website available. It appears that both places have small numbers of apartments, so it doesn't take much to swing the vacancy rates (and, therefore, presumably the rental markets). The vacancy rates seem to be trending downward the last little while. Vacancy rate in Yellowknife in Oct 2010 for all apartments was 0.9% (16 available units out of 1765), Bachelor apts were 1.6% (1 available unit out of 61, ha ha). Avg rent for bachelor was $1006: http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/odpub/esub/64523/64523_2010_B02.pdf?fr=1303838531375 Vacancy rate in Whitehorse (only buildings with 4 or more units were surveyed) in Dec 2010 for apartments was 1.3%. Andee 220524 Report post Posted April 27, 2011 Have you tried contacting any real estate agents in those areas. Sometimes they will broker rentals for people. A friend of mine did this years ago when he moved to Grande Prairie for awhile to work up north.
