Guest W***ledi*Time Report post Posted May 24, 2011 From The Sydney Morning Herald, 24 May 2011: http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/lifematters/whats-in-a-handbag-sex-toys-knickers-and-dog-biscuits-20110524-1f1uy.html Sex toys, screwdrivers and spare knickers are among the items regularly carried around in handbags, according to a survey of women. The poll confirmed what most men suspect - women really do carry almost everything but the kitchen sink in their handbags, with many ladies also confessing inner handbag "demons" of envy and pride through an emotional attachment to their favourite bags. Essentials including keys, tissues and make-up were carried alongside sex toys, porn videos, spare knickers, tarot cards, dog biscuits and a piano tuning fork - just in case. The average woman owns seven handbags, according to the poll results. Almost a fifth of women surveyed, 19 per cent, said they used their handbag as an object to hide behind when not feeling confident on a "fat day", while 16 per cent said their handbag was like a "security blanket". And 21 per cent said receiving a compliment about their handbag was the ultimate flattery while a third confessed to feeling envious of another woman with a nice bag. Some women also confessed to carrying sentimental and comforting but hardly practical items, including a son's baby tooth, a daughter's first pair of shoes and their father's watch. Many women also carry mementos such as champagne corks or confetti from their wedding day or a pebble from a beach when on holiday. "A woman's handbag is an extension of who she is and helps her facilitate the numerous roles she plays in the 21st century," said Australian style commentator Kathryn Eisman. "If women are indeed urban warriors, then their handbag is their armoury and ammunition." More than 2000 women were surveyed for the poll by Kellogg's Special K Mini Breaks. "It's amazing to see what women carry around with them," said spokeswoman Sophie Colling. "What a woman keeps in her handbag is a reflection of their life and women who are on the go need to be organised. "Carrying essential items such as snacks in your handbag demonstrate how women are in control of their lives." The top 10 most common items found in handbags were: 1. Keys 2. Pens 3. Tissues 4. Paracetamol/medication 5. Receipts 6. Make-up 7. Tampons/bandaid/other first aid items 8. Sunglasses 9. Snack/chewing gum 10. Compact mirror Ten of the most unusual things found in handbags were: 1. Screwdriver kit 2. Porn DVD 3. Son's baby tooth 4. Daughter's first pair of shoes 5. Intimate toys 6. Tarot cards 7. Vampire voodoo doll 8. Confetti from their wedding day 9. Spare knickers 10. Piano tuning fork
Nicolette Vaughn 294340 Report post Posted May 24, 2011 I don't carry anything unusual like on that list below and like to keep it simple so I can find things when I go looking for them. However, all of my belongings seem to get lost in my handbags since it seems like you could fit the kitchen sink in there. I like to clean my bags out once a week and will throw away things like receipts. 1. Wallet 2. Keys 3, Small makeup case 4. Sunglasses 5. Receipts 6. Bottled water

Miss Scarlett 25073 Report post Posted May 24, 2011 I have different bags packed for different occasions. HAHA 1. Regular purse -- wallet/keys/cell/lipstick/smokes/lighter/glasses/diaper wipes/first aid kit/etc... 2. Work purse -- condoms/lube/massage oils/hand sanitizer/extra outfits/shoes/diaper wipes/first aid kit/etc..... 3. Family outings -- sunscreen/bug spray/sunglasses/diaper wipes/first aid kit/etc..... This way I am not lugging everything around all the time. I have pre-packed bags depending on what I am doing and where I am going. I love to be prepared for the unexpected, and I am sure the lists could go on for each bag. All of my purses look like luggage. haha
Kyra.Graves 23779 Report post Posted May 24, 2011 Okay I'll look as well, my everyday bag is rather big. wallet sunglasses & eyeglasses both in one hardcover case mints x2 gum phone x2 small hairbrush reusable nylon shopping bag pen x3 mineral powder (doubles as sunblock) lipstick x2 hair elastic x4 hair clip (metal) $18.48 in loose change on the bottom empty gum wrappers x6 - which I've now thrown out. My purse tends to get a lot of my garbage, if I don't see a waste basket around I just throw everything in my purse until next time I clean it out. I won't litter so at times I have put some unusual or not generally purse friendly items in there just because it seemed more convenient than holding on to the item and wandering around aimlessly looking for the garbage can that can never be found when you need it. Guest S**a*Q Report post Posted May 24, 2011 I'm of the non-purselike people it seems. I only carry a purse in the summer, as I usually have no jacket with pockets. Sunglasses are on head, or table waiting to be put on head. In my Pink Floyd tote bag (which doubles nicely as a purse) I have: Wallet Phone (x2) and headphones 2 Keys on a chain (If I'm going on a call, I have condoms, otherwise, I don't...) Certain things may move in and out of it, if I find them before I leave, like a pen, hair elastic or lip stuff. If I'm traveling with my computer bag, I have no purse, the 3 things move into the pack sack with the computer and the necessary cabling for it. Guest f***2f*** Report post Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) I suspect if this poll had been done in the States or if some of our ladies answering were in the States we might find mace/bear spray, a gun, a rape whistle.... I knew a lady in San Diego who literally had a brick in there so she could do some damage if she swung it at an assailant. Purses and handbags have always been a mystery to me. My mother always taught me that a ladies purse was a private thing and not to ask her the entire contents or go in her purse under pain of death. I've always regarded them as being awesome repositories of feminine secrets. It seemed she could pull just about anything out of hers on demand. She convinced me when I was a small boy that she even had a rabbit in there!! (of course many ladies today do have a rabbit in there! lol) I remember in the late sixties or early seventies she had a huge purse that was called "A Kangaroo Purse" but my brother and I called it "The Suitcase." I can remember getting on a plane one time when we were going on a family holiday and wondering if they would make her check it. That would have made an interesting confrontation as there is no way they would have wrestled that sucker away from her!!
