I personally have never considered having a tat done. It's just the generation I come from. I understand those who have a passion for body art. I have my own passions, but they don't include ink (oh well).

 

But, where does the scale begin or end - would anyone consider skull implants or teeth shaping. I think work like that has got to be an artistic/personal statement, but at what age does interest in that end?

 

What got folks interested in body art? Good experiences, Bad experiences?

Is it a chick thing now?

I've seen mods on people in their 70's. I don't think this type of thing has an age restriction.

 

And it's certainly not restricted to women either. Plenty of guys have body mods.

My interest in tattoos specifically has mostly been purely aesthetic--my body is a canvas and I'm going to cover it in things that are beautiful/mean something to me.

I think it's great for anyone to have ink, no it's most deff not a chick thing.

way too many guys are getting inked for it to be considered a chick thing.

but, most chicks looove good ink. thats why they get their own.

Piercings other than the ears or belly button are a complete turn off to me especially nose ring, monroes, ringlets or lebrets, but a small star pin in the nose is ok not to big just nice an danity.

I don't think that tattoos are necessarily an age thing, nor primarily a woman thing. I am certainly male and certainly getting up there in age and 5 years ago got my single small Canadian flag.

 

I have seen people with tattoos for whom the tattoo was meaningful to them for a specific reason, and that is pretty cool. Others use tattoos simply as an art expression.

 

I also have to say that I must be a wimp because my one and only will be the last! I cannot imagine going through the process of having the full arm or leg bodyart that we see now much more commonly.

 

When I see the pics here of Sara, Angel and Cleo, I think to myself that these women are WAY tougher than I am :)

 

However I am also learning to appreciate the use of bodyart as a way of expressing oneself more than I ever have before.

I personally love my body exactly the way it is and I have no desire to change it. I will not get any more piercings, no tattoos, no implants, no hair dye. I respect the choices others make. Your Body Your Choice!

Well I grew up in an age when it was men who were in the military, or criminals, who had tattoos done, woman didn't have tattoos done. BTW this isn't judgemental, just back in my day, that was the way it was. Now, one thing about seeing ladies is seeing how tattoos can be very attractive on woman (and with one of my favorite ladies it's fun exploring looking at them, and for any new ones)

Would I get a tattoo, or a piercing, no. Just not me. But that's not saying it's wrong. It's just something that should only be done if the person feels it's right for her or him

My "modifications" or beautifications started off first as a rebellion from my parents, then as a way to be both avoided and as a way for me to stand out.

 

I began with piercings, slowly filling up my ears, *(My parents are VERY conservative, so I had to slowly work my way into things, mostly without them knowing.) Once I moved out, at 16, I had free reign so it was then started on the body piercings. I had my nipple done first when I was 16, and my belly button. At 18, I went to the tongue, and lip, and so on. I slowly shifted through piercings, removing them as they become cumbersome or got in the way. *(The eyebrow looked funny on me, and the barbell in my left nipple got caught on my bra all the time. The tongue piercings threatened to chip teeth, and the lip ring hampered my from playing the flute, so I personally chose to remove those.) I think honestly, I grew out of the body piercings.

 

At 18, I got my first tattoo. Now my family has no tattoos AT ALL and my friends didn't either, so again it was a way for me to stand out. I have a huge hypothesis in the environmental/biological birth debate. My adoptive parents have NO tats whatsoever... No one in the family does except me (and now my little brother). When I met my birth mother, she has a lot of tattoos, one of which she got while pregnant for me. I wonder if the biological predisposition to tattoos comes from her...

 

My first tattoo was a minor one, a small heart, over my heart. The second tattoo, that's where I evolved. My second tattoo was the first instalment of my full back piece. Then I started on a horrible tribal dragon sleeve to cover some scars. My tattoos were dark and poorly done, but at the time, I think that my tattoos were a socially acceptable form of self-mutilation, I liked the pain, and the dark "scary" tats kept people from talking to me, which at the time, I liked. I was a different person back then...

 

Now, why the cover-ups? Why re-spend a small fortune on more and more pain? *(Which I hate btw... I can only sit through an exact hour of tattooing, no matter where on my body.) I grew tired of people asking me what my tattoos were and I met one of the best artists I've ever seen. He's finished all my tattoos so far and we are still planning a full leg piece. Now, my "good" tattoos attract people to me, which I love. :) I like the looks, attention and when people yell: "Hey, nice tats!". *(I make fun of people sometimes and say: "Did you just say nice tits??? Hahaha!) I love knowing that while I'm walking by, someone is watching me, silently, or not so silently, appreciating the art that I walk around with everyday.

The mods and art that I've had done to my body are a map of my life, a history that you can run your fingers over, remiders of people, places and intencity. There's a little ink and many cuttings most of which have fadded to almost nothing or are gone compleatly now. The cuttings are mostly done with a scalple by a dear freind of mine, she cuts flowers and poems and chakras into me. There are scars on my inner thighs and ribs left by a lovers nails 2 years ago dureing a tryst at a club. I wouldn't trade those for anything. The piercing between my eyes on the bridge of my nose tells whom ever I'm talking to volumes and there is no denying that it's there or covering it up because that's how I try to live my life, with out hideing.

My friend with the scalple is working on a set of irons to brand some words into my back. We talked a lot about there meaning and how best to set them in my skin so that they would stay for a long time.

I live in this body, I work with it and I love with it. One day when I'm old and can't speak for my self any more my skin is going to carry the story of a life well lived for me.

Like Sara I started body modifications as a rebellion...I had my lower back tattoo done the day after my 16 birthday because I could and I knew it would piss my mother off. At the time I thought it would be my only one...I got addicted to them like so many other people.

 

piercings at my eyes seem more like self-injury then tattoos, they hurt way more even if the pain is just for 1 seconds. At this date I have a total of 10 piercings and will probably add some more with time. I have my belly button, both nipples, my tongue, a nose stud, 4 on my ears and one industrial. I plan on having one on the crunch of my ear, maybe a labret one day and some dermal...

 

I got my second tattoo on my left shoulder, it`s a bondage angel...It does have his meaning that I won`t explain here....

my third one I had it done this January and it`s a quote on my right ribcage(holy hell it hurt as fuck)

my forth one is a big flower piece to cover some scars on my left tight...

 

Now those that I have plans are....a sleeve on my left arm of the movie The Last Unicorn....I know I want one on my feet, a small one that will probably be done this week actually:p and I will see for later on for more...

 

For me, they are a a way to express myself, claiming that this body is MINE and mine alone. I know that my mother really hate them and doesn`t want to see me anymore because of them. It`s kinda sad, but why should I be ashamed of something that I love and part of me? It may sound brutal and barbarian to suffer a couple of hours at the time to have some ink and metals injected in your skin, but it`s a way to scream to the world who you are. It`s a way to express something that really mean something to you, on your skin that you will always carry around no matter what.

If I may weigh in on this...I have no piercings, implants or tattoos (ok, one!) And although I love the badass look of of those things, it just isn't me. Now as I look around me, I see that my decision put me in the minority. I like that. I feel like I stand out sometimes because I don't have any mods or tats or implants. Vive la difference!

Have to agree with you Soleil. Everyone has to do what is right for them.

Some ladies (and gentlemen) can carry off having piercings/tattoos/implants while others can't...it is IMHO a reflection of that person's personality.

Me, the only tattoo I ever get is if a pen explodes on me LOL

But I certainly don't judge anyone for having piercings/tattoos/implants. Just something I can't see myself ever doing

Wow November - You have stones with diamonds!

I appreciate your sense of adventure in exploring things to do with your body. I have the same sense of curiosity with other (but less permanent) things.

 

I don`t think I have the fruit to go through with tats or scars or branding...but I do have some involuntary piercings that I have to live with.

I got my first tattoo because I had just moved back to Canada after a few years and wanted to carry the flag with my always, so I have that tattooed.

 

My only rule is mine are never visible in public. When I put on a suit and go to work you would never know I have them. Maybe it's just me, but where I work any visible stuff stops your career.

I love tattoos and piercings on other people. More extreme modifications too. Yes, some I find funny or distracting to look at (ear lobe stretching with out the jewelry in it and neck tattoos), but I like most of it on both men and women. Some of it is quite amazing and beautiful. Some of it I find very sexy and arousing. In fact, I am quite attracted to people with tattoos - especially if they have a geek vibe to them. Its such a sexy mix to me. I can think of a few clients who took off their Brooks Brothers suits to reveal tattoos which made me smile.

 

For myself I like them too, but fairly discreetly. I had my ear lobes pierced in our traditional western manner when I was 12 and all through my teens and twenties I thought that would be it for me. Doing something else in a permanent way seemed too committal to me. I couldn't decide on what to get, much less where.

 

Then I had a bit of an early midlife crisis and felt a desire to do something else. I got a stud put near the rook area of my right ear. It is true you can get a high from it. It made me feel so good. It only hurt when I slept on it during the healing stages. I was tempted to get more but decided to take my time. I have an artist friend who gets a new tattoo of her own design every 2 years and she recommended I wait a bit and let inspiration not adrenaline drive my choice. It would be more meaningful that way.

 

As for tattoos I got my first ones last year after much thought and consideration. I was told it would affect my work as an escort, that I would lose clients. I love having as much freedom as possible. I have created a life around this desire. To have my work determine what I could do or not do with my body did not sit well with me. I decided if there were clients who no longer wanted to see me because of ink then so be it. I see them for an hour or two. I am living with this body and my sense of self until death. That has to be my ultimate consideration.

 

I know it sounds dramatic, but the way some people talked about tattoos and escorts it seemed life or death, but that didn't seem to happen. I still dress in the same and carry myself in the same quirky yet sensual manner, but I just have a few little extra markings on my body. They are an expression of what I was going through at that time and I love them as a reminder of it as well as aesthetic decoration. They are small but meaningful.

 

I am thinking of getting another piece. Maybe it will be this year. Maybe the next. I have been pondering this one for 18 months already so it might be time.

 

By the way I do remove them from photos because they would make me very easily identifiable. I am out to a few close friends, but for security reasons I prefer to keep a low profile. I would not want my landlord for example to know what I do. I have heard too many horror stories.

Holy crap, too chicken to get re-pierced but you're okay with the idea of branding. I get the feeling you've got a much higher pain threshold than I!

I think i'm finally calling it quits with the piercing as well. I don't want a tackle box face and i'm still a bit gun shy after what happened last time I was freshly pierced (seriously, who punches someone in the EAR?!)
