By such an age, average testosterone levels in men have dropped about 10% from their more youthful peak. The study's results may well have been somewhat different, and perhaps less "surprising", had the average age of men in the study been, say, 25 years of age. Another of the criteria for selecting the participants in the study was that the couples had to be in a stable committed relationship; the median relationship duration for the couples in the study was 25 years. So the men (and women) were pre-selected to be happy with whatever they were getting or had settled into, in such a long-term situation.
