Why is it called a hobby?

Recommended Posts

It's been puzzling me for awhile now ... why do they call this a hobby? I always figured a hobby was something old and staid like building model cars. Given that, it's an odd choice to call this a hobby, no?

To me, hobby is a great choice of words. A hobby is generally any activity or interest that is pursued for pleasure or relaxation.

A hobby is something you do for fun. If it wasn't fun, why would we do it?

Going to the movies is also a hobby, something one's enjoy. In our case, it's like going to the movies except, we are acting in it. ;-)

I think hobbies offer something to take your mind off your regular life. They will always keep you interested, with lots of diversity and new (to you) things yet familiar enough that you feel comfortable and secure.

For example, bottle cap collecting. First you start with some you find on the street corner near you. Then you move up to finding exotic ones on the 'net or trading with friends. Eventually you discover there's a whole world full of different caps and the options are endless. Should you collect only local ones? Only ones that are wrinkled from being opened with an opener? French ones? European ones? Large ones or small ones? Maybe you just collect randomly with no real focus....

This place qualifies as a hobby I think.

Depends on whether you get others to rub or not - left or right by yourself, not so much. Left or right by Sue, Debbie, Natasha, Stephanie... well, you get the point.

When it gets to the point that one can change hands and gain a stroke, it's time to take up a real hobby!
