Old Dog 179138 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 Dr. No (1962), starring Sean Connery, is the first James Bond film. Based on the 1958 Ian Fleming novel of the same name, it was adapted by Richard Maibaum, Johanna Harwood, and Berkely Mather. The film was directed by Terence Young, and produced by Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli, a partnership that would continue until 1975. In the film, James Bond is sent to Jamaica on an investigation into the death of a fellow British agent. The murder trail leads him to the underground base of Dr. Julius No, who is plotting to disrupt an early American manned space launch with a radio beam weapon. Although the first of the Bond books to be made into a film, Dr. No wasn't the first of Fleming's novels, Casino Royale being the debut for the character. Consequently, the film does not depict Bond earning his Double-0 status, which grants him a licence to kill; instead, it presents Bond as a seasoned veteran, and even makes a few references to threads from earlier books, such as M mentioning that Bond's current gun gave him problems, before presenting him with his more well known Walther PPK. Dr. No was produced with a low budget, but was a financial success, leading to a series of films that continues to this day. Dr. No also launched a successful genre of "secret agent" films that flourished in the 1960s. Many of the iconic aspects of a typical James Bond film were established in Dr. No, beginning with what is known as the gun barrel sequence. The film begins with an introduction to the character through the view of a gun barrel, and a highly stylized main title sequence, both created by Maurice Binder. In his work on film, production designer Ken Adam established a unique and expansive visual style that is the hallmark of the Bond film series.

Reuben Sandwich 13841 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 I enjoy the more recent Bond movies too with Daniel Craig. I thought you were going to write about some Cold War event when I saw the thread title. Also on this date, I stayed late in my grade 3 classroom cleaning the blackboards, just so I could spend more time with my favourite teacher, Miss B...t. mrrnice2 157005 Report post Posted October 6, 2011 What a great anniversary to recall. A confirmed Bond film fan, I have to go with the original, Sean Connery as # 1 but our newest Bond, Daniel Craig is right there as # 2 in my opinion. May this unique series continue for a long time to come.
Gentleman11 10508 Report post Posted October 7, 2011 As a big Bond fan (and without Googling), I recall that Ian Flemming (author of James Bond) was a real life important member of Churchill's underground spy network. I have read and reread William Stephensons's(spelling?) " A Man Called Intrepid" over the years and Stephenson's (oh yes, a Canadian no less), contributions are huge. Great reading suggestion over the weekend... G11
Old Dog 179138 Report post Posted October 7, 2011 It was also the first Hollywood role for the then 26 year old starlet, Ursula Andress.... ... who celebrated her 75th birthday this year....
roamingguy 300292 Report post Posted October 7, 2011 Dr. No and the other James Bond movies starring Sean Connery stand the test of time...more focused on a storyline than on pyrotechnics Yes the Bond movies today are entertaining, but they aren't classics like the original ones were/are RG
srch4intimacy 204 Report post Posted October 7, 2011 My favourite bond is Sean Connery. My favourite movie has always been Goldfinger. Just watched it a couple of weeks ago with my kids. I caught my son throwing a black rimmed hat recently - just like in the movie. But I also like the more recent ones with Daniel Craig.
