The Best Bond and the Worst Bond

Recommended Posts

Old Dog's thread about Dr. No

http://www.cerb.ca/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=67212

got me to thinking of another James Bond oriented thread

What was/is the best James Bond movie ever

What was/is the worst James Bond movie ever

In my opinion, the best Bond movie "From Russia With Love"

The worst "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"

My favorite Bond film is: From Russia With Love

Least favorite Bond film is: The Man With the Golden Gun

Least favorite was a hard choice because they are all good movies in their own way.

RG.... I have to disagree with you on the worst. Sure George Lazenby was not Sean Connery, but then again NO ONE after Sean was Sean.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service was not a bad movie, in fact, it was one of the tighter scripts... it just gets slammed because George was a one hit wonder.

The worst Bond movie??? It's a tie. Roger Moore's "A View to a Kill" and Sean Connery's non "true" Bond "Never Say Never Again." Roger was too damn old to play the role that should have been Pierce Brosnan's (if Remington Steele hadn't been a smashing success) and well Connery played a great Bond in a very very bad movie (in fact, no one includes it in the Bond list.)

The best??? The trio of Sean's Goldfinger, From Russia with Love and You Only Live Twice. Coolest 60's gadgets, best suave Bond, greatest assortment of villains and some of the best story lines in the franchise.

In terms of 007 rankings, I would go:

1. Sean Connery

2. Pierce Brosnan

3. Timothy Dalton

4. Daniel Craig

5. George Lazenby

6. Roger Moore... and only because although I loved the 70's and early 80's Bond gadgets, the movies themselves were hokey and Roger suffered because of it....

Had to put On Her Majesty's Secret Service as worst, for me, because it's the only JB I can't watch again, its the one Bond movie I hate...not to mention James Bond just shouldn't cry, but he does in this movie...this is a guy with a licence to kill after all

But agree with you, Sean Connery hands down the best Bond ever

I pretty much agree with you about Bonds, except switching Moore and Lazenby around

My 2 cents

As a child of the 1990s, Pierce Brosnan is my favorite Bond as the action-heavy style of his films appeal to me more than the slower style of the Connery Films (although I accept that From Russia With Love is much more exciting than Dr. No). That said, my favorite film is Goldeneye (one of my top3 action movies of all time) and my least favorite would be any film with Roger Moore in it. I liked Connery's Bond as well though, and I think Timothy Dalton is criminally underrated.

Well, in terms of the Bonds themselves, I can't stand either George Lazenby or Timothy Dalton. I'm RG, I'm with you on OHMSS - I hate it too. Lazenby just wrecked it, especially in his horrible efforts to be amusing (and let's face it, you can't be Bond if you can't deliver a one-liner).

As for the best... Connery, but I like Brosnan too. And my favorite movie has to be Goldfinger, if only for the way it's changed for me over the years. The first time I saw it, I had no clue that "Pussy Galore" was in any way amusing...

+1 Agreed fully except that I would list Daniel Craig as no. 2 due primarily to the fact that I loved Casino Royale ... it included many of the great elements on the original Bond movies ... gritty and mostly realistic(although I could do without that goofy prototype plane ... should have had something else being blown up).

OD, that reminds me of two bits of Cary Grant trivia:

  • Ian Fleming modeled the James Bond character partially with Grant in mind.
  • Cary turned down the role of James Bond in Dr. No (1962), believing himself to be too old at 58 to play the character.

(Roger was 58 in "A View to a Kill")

Being a child of the 70's / early 80's I feel the need to do a very unpopular thing among Bond fans (I say this jokingly, as the actual fan boards tend to be much more intense about thier opinions) and stick up for Roger Moore's interpretation of Bond. Yes, Roger Moore would have been my first Bond.

In terms of the Bond series he was a large part of what kept the series popular during the 70's well into the 80's. Agreed that he may not have always been given the all round best scripts but he went with what he had (good and not so good) and made it fun for the audience as proved by his strong box office numbers.

As for Roger being too old by mid 80's, the mistake was trying to sell an actor in his late 50's as a character who was about 40. I always thought they should have made some light hearted mentions of his age by having him in a teacher role and has to take over the mission. Love scenes could have been handled the way they did for Cary Grant in the movie "Charade" or hire more mature actressess (as Roger suggested).

All this to say Roger is much higher up on my list than many others (dare I say it right behind Connery). Truth be told I like all of the actors who played Bond, they each brought something different to the role and contributed their own unique personalites / talents.

I too would rate Moore as #2 after Connery. While RM's later Bond films did get tired, he was not as bad IMHO as Lazenby by any stretch.

Dalton I would rate behind Brosnan: the former's movies were "heavy-action" which I enjoyed, but the latter is a better actor.

OHMSS worst film for sure.

Patrick McGoohan is the best Bond that never was.

Daniel Craig is the gayest bond ever (sorry Christy)

Moore & Brosnan are equally plastic; they would make

great Ken dolls.

Timothy Dalton belongs on the stage reciting Shakespeare,

although I fell in love with his Bond girl.

In the end, there is only one Bond.

Having just started an 11 movie Bond marathon (I don't have cable, lol, and Olddog only has 11 to borrow) I can assure you that Lazenby does not cry. Having watched the making of, I am assured of this: the director says in the first takes Lazenby does shed one tear as he was quite wrapped up in the character and had just re-read that part in the book for inspiration. Of course this was not the take included in the movie, the director, Peter Hunt, even said on the re-take "let's do one without the tear, James Bond doesn't cry".

I think the best bond is daniel craig, before him I would have said sean connery, but daniel has topped him on the sexy scale, just my opinion, yum!

I think on the sexy meter I completely agree with you, I will have a more comprehensive review after my marathon but I should say that I am a little sweet on Pierce. Having grown up in the '80's-'90s like Maverick said, may be to blame. Only now after having grown up can I admit that I never really gave the older Bonds a chance, I had a negative bias growing up that forced me to disapprove of anything my father enjoyed- older Bond and John Le Carré films being at the forefront of this bias...

Daniel Craig is the gayest bond ever (sorry Christy)

.

Sorry Oldblueeyes, I think you could use a better word than "gayest". I wonder if he is so attractive that you feel he might be the one Bond that would turn you- hence, your usage of the word, lol! Not to get all PC on you, but really, was there not another word in your vocabulary to use there? On a side note, I find gay men incredibly hot, so I find your comment not only complimentary (IMO, because gay men are hot), but also offensive by the negative connotations your comment has on being gay.

I'll be back with a better take on Bond (... James Bond :icon_razz:) after my marathon, and hopefully after seeing the movies I am missing too!

Well, as there was a report of Craig misbehaving in a gay bar in the States somewhere, and as I can recall no such story regarding other Bond actors, I stand by my assertion that he's the 'most-likey-to-be-gay/most-likely-to-have-a-gay-following/most-likely-to-wax-his-body/most-likely-to-pout-like-a-little-girl' Bond ever. I believe he has a large gay following too, so that adds to the factor. :)

I'm not too intimidated by any Bond actually; I'd make a good one myself! :) Craig is a good-looking man, I can easily admit that, and has great blue eyes, but would I want him massaging my prostate rather than a hot dame, hmmmmm, I think not. :)

Actually, in an attempt to reconcile with Cristy, as she is one of the hottest ladies in Metro, I genuinely agree, Craig did a great job as Bond and I really liked his movies. I hope that gets me off her ****list! :)

And, to appease Bethany, as she has a hell of an avatar, I will replace my wording.

I shall remove myself to the library and sip my red.

Having issues with my enter button lately, posted my rep comment too soon! I was going to say Don't go, I liked reading your post except the gay part! And would have likely went on to say(if there was room, which there is not) that I don't want to dissuade you from posting, this is a forum after all, just thought you could have chosen a better word.

Elaborating on your choice helps a lot, I had no idea he was implicated in any gay scandals, makes me like him even more now, lol... Truly a class act to have explained yourself, not that you have to do that, I'd hate for CERB to get over-censored, I just think that as forums go, this one should be as LGBT friendly as possible considering the wide range of sexualities entertained by this site...

Don't worry Bethany. I need a good slap in the ass once in a while

to reboot my political correctness meter. I'm glad it was you who

slapped me!

Can you do it again?!? :)

Well my dear... I have the other 11 in BluRay on the shelves... you may just have to pop over for the cool Bond marathon!!!!

BTW, 007 #23 is apparently slated to start filming in a couple of weeks with a Canadian release date of October 26th, 2012. There now remain only four unused original Ian Fleming titles that could possibly be used as a title for this film. These are "The Property of a Lady", "The Hildebrand Rarity", "Risico" and "007 in New York" (aka "Agent 007 in New York").
