mrrnice2 157005 Report post Posted October 30, 2011 With each passing year comes a stronger awareness of the contribution and sacrifice made by the men and women of the Canadian Forces. These are contributions of the past as well as those that are ongoing. It is with personal sadness that I recognize just how long it has taken me to truly understand what Remembrance Day is really all about. In my youth and well into adulthood I saw it as a day of glorifying war, of justifying violence as a means of problem solving, and of promoting the military for nationalistic purposes alone. How wrong I was. It was after having heard my father-in-law talk for that one and only time about his experiences on the Canadian Corvettes escorting the convoys across the Atlantic. It was after meeting a Canadian peacekeeper who served in Bosnia. It was after talking to former students who are now in the military and have been to Afghanistan and back. It was on those occassions that I heard the pain and heard the pride, that I began to understood the importance of remembering and paying tribute. So on November 11th I am out at a service, every year, and it is with great respect on any day when I happen to meet and recognize a member of our Forces. May I point you to a song by a 7 time East Coast Music Award winner Terry Kelly, entitled "A Pittance of Time". For me, this is one of the most powerful Remembrance Day songs out there. da2root 871 Report post Posted November 5, 2011 Recently I attended a dinner to honour Veteran's - we had vets from WWII, Korean War, and the Cold War in attendance; there were some VERY moving stories and memories that they shared. This morning I logged onto facebook to see one of my friends share the following video that means a great deal to me (for reasons I won't share here) and wanted to share the video
Lowdark 5613 Report post Posted November 5, 2011 That video was very moving DaRoot. The song by the Trews is available on iTunes and I encourage people to purchase it because proceeds are donated to families of soldiers kiled in action in Afghanistan. A quick note on the politcal debate-Canada is not like other modern powers-our military has a strict mandate for involvement, usually humanitarian and peacekeeping. There are plenty of recent global conflicts that Canada has chosen not to participate in because of dubious causes. And let's not forget, Canadian forces did more than any other country during the genocide in Rawanda to try and save as many lives as possible while the rest of world (including portions of our own government) looked the other way. That's my two cents. Thank you for the thread Julia. Wearing a poppy and remembering is a choice to honour and respect the loss and sacrafices we forget every other day of the year. Freddom is expensive, no matter what part of the world you live in, and the sad, tragic truth of the matter is that the first payment will always be made in blood. Lest we Forget those that bled for freedom's cause.
spud271 47779 Report post Posted November 5, 2011 In case you have never seen this video, I hope it shows people in Canada that the rest of the world knows what you have lost due to this last war. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1R8qLAmkLU
