VedaSloan 119179 Report post Posted December 22, 2011 I love graphic novels (basically extended comic books). One of the first (fictional) books I read about sex work was a graphic novel called Rent Girl by Michelle Tea. Another good one related to the escort industry is Chester Brown's Paying for It, which recounts the authors experiences with escorts in Toronto. Some of my other faves (non-sex work related) include: The Watchmen (big surprise!) Human Diastrophism (a big collection of the Love and Rockets books) The Boys by Garth Ennis Ones I haven't read but which are on my list to check out: The Walking Dead The Crow (just found out about this thanks to castle!) Anyone else a graphic novel fan? What are your favourites? Which ones do you hate? Want to read?

Surf_Nazis_Must_Die 8958 Report post Posted December 22, 2011 As for the ones you mentioned: The Watchmen = Amazing! The Walking Dead - Read the first fifty issues so far. Robert Kirkman is one evil bastard when it comes to how he treats his characters! The Crow - Very different from the movie, but a good time nonetheless Some other Suggestions: Locke and Key by Joe Hill - The whole premise behind the keys and the secrets they carry hooked me something fierce! Invincible, Tech Jacket, and The Astounding Wolfman, all by Robert Kirkman - These aren't your older brother's super hero comics. Not by a long shot! Once again, Kirkman puts his characters through the wringer time and time again. Preacher by Garth Ennis - A small town preacher loses his faith and takes up a quest to find god and bring him to account for his actions. Loads of fucked up shit in this one. V for Vendetta - Another Graphic novel that is quite different from the film. Not for everybody, but I found it was an enjoyable read. Dr. McNinja by Christopher Hastings - Originally a webcomic, it's now been released in graphic novel format. For those who love laughing at the irreverent and ridiculous
ostirch 1668 Report post Posted December 22, 2011 I thought Chester Brown's, "Paying for It" was amazing. I could relate to a lot of his feelings and ideas. The novel is supposed to be biographical, so some of the escorts depicted may also be Toronto Cerbites.

Obviously there is no way for me to know, but it was fun fantasizing. Haha. Additional Comments: As for the ones you mentioned: The Watchmen = Amazing! I definitely need some holiday reading.

If you like Year One you should check out Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's follow ups to that The Long Halloween which is a really interesting "who done it" kinda story. And Dark Victory which is Robin's origin story but told in a very serious and interesting way. I loved trying to guess who certain escorts might be. Obviously there is no way for me to know, but it was fun fantasizing. Haha. Additional Comments: I am totally going shopping for graphic novels later! I definitely need some holiday reading. I just recently read Paying For It which was really interesting. I'll have to keep an eye out foor Rent Girl! And if you're looking for a copy of The Crow I'm pretty sure Silver Snail on Bank st has one that I've been eyeballing myself because my copy's pretty worn down. And I think Chapters on Rideau has one too. And for the Stephen King/Dark Tower fans out there Marvel's Dark Tower series is really interesting. Additional Comments: A few I want to read are From Hell, Road to Perdition, Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns and Dark Knight Strikes Again, I also want to finish off the Sin City series . I've only read Yellow Bastard so far. For the Garth Ennis fans I would recommend Punisher: Welcome Back Frank. It's twisted good fun. loopie 15358 Report post Posted December 22, 2011 'Paying For It' was actually what got me to give hobbying a try. I found, like in Chester Brown's previous autobiographical comic book 'I Never Liked You', I can identify with Brown's thought process and personality. It was a really well constructed narrative that kept its focus. I liked 'I Never Liked You' better than 'Paying For It' because it was more touching. Even though it's about teenage years, I find I still pick it up from time to time and read it again and still love it. Unlike 'Ghost World' (both the comics and the movie). I still have great respect for what Clowes did with 'Ghost World', but I've found I have just outgrown it. Additional Comments: I also liked the 'Sin City' books. As far as Frank Miller goes, I also really like 'Hard Boiled', it's like a 'Where's Waldo' book of futuristic destruction. I pick it up frequently and just flip through and look at the art. I was wondering if any of you have read 'X'ed Out' by Charles Burns? I read 'Black Hole' by him and it was pretty good, but not great. I'd be willing to give him another try. VedaSloan 119179 Report post Posted December 28, 2011 Ok, I clearly need to acquire the Sin City novels too! And From Hell. SERIOUSLY. TOO MANY CHOICES.
castle 38816 Report post Posted December 28, 2011 SERIOUSLY. TOO MANY CHOICES. Tell me about it! lol......I also forgot to mention V For Vendetta, another one on my "need to read" list.
loopie 15358 Report post Posted December 28, 2011 Ok, I clearly need to acquire the Sin City novels too! In my opinion, you can probably skip the last 'Sin City' book 'To Hell And Back', it's by far the weakest. I liked all the other ones though. Definately get 'A Dame To Kill For'. Knowing me though I'll probably read them all anyway :) I've only got one class next semester and so I'll have lots of time on my hands :)
castle 38816 Report post Posted December 28, 2011 Aw crap! I just came from chapters and picked up a few graphic novels and completely forgot to check for Rent Girl!......I doubt they'd have it on the shelf anyway....they apparently had Paying For It in stock but I couldn't find it anywhere...I ended up having to order it. ajd20000 655 Report post Posted December 29, 2011 Thanks Berlin, for mentioning graphic novels. I found Paying for It and it's helping this noob understand hobbying better. I'll be looking for Rent Girl next. And Watchmen was awesome! The movie not so much. A good friend lent me the book just before the movie came out. The touchpoint for me was the sex scene: in the comic it's a beautiful shared moment between two awkward people who have been denying their attraction for too long; in the movie it's clearly just something tossed together by the director to earn a PG13 rating or whatever. Props to friends who recommend good books to read!

VENUS ENVY my friend. That's where I got my copy of Rent Girl. They are located downtown on the corner of Bank and Lisgar :)
loopie 15358 Report post Posted January 2, 2012 I just finished reading this epic graphic novel called Ayako, I really liked it. It takes places in Japan after WW2. It's part espionage thriller, part history lesson, and part family drama. I found it really engaging. Good read.
