Best book on poker strategy?

I learned to play hold 'em poker over the past year, and man! I'm BAD at it! I don't (and never would) play for money, but I've been browsing books, looking for something to at least help me improve enough to soothe my ego. There are so many!

 

Any recommendations?

Doyle Brunson's Super System is generally considered to be the best book on poker strategy ever written. There's a sequel (Super System 2) I haven't read but is probably a little more current.

This is a pretty good book that teaches some strategy while also having a pretty entertaining story.

I'm not as familiar with the "online poker" books, but you are correct in saying that there is no shortage of them.

You can't go wrong with Harrington on Hold'em. He has a three volume set on tournament play and another set on cash games. If you learn his style of play you'll hold your own at most beginner and many intermediate levels. You can also play for real money and come out ahead without too much difficulty. You've got remember at the lower levels most of your opponents will be poor players.

best way to learn is playing small games with your friends. thats how i learnt how to play properly and you can slowly go into money, my last outing to the casino i left 1200 up and ive been playing for a year. if you are living in ontario you can check the WPTAPL website to see if there are free tournaments in cities throughout ontario. they are held in local pubs, i know ottawa has some and toronto, for sure, you can check for other cities. Honestly the best was to learn is to go out and do.

Thanks, but I'm not sure I want to play with "real" money. I have been playing on ZyngaPoker, and I suppose it costs something, since I have to buy chips occasionally (especially when my husband burns through my stack with his "go all in!" strategies -- I keep telling him, this ain't Casino Royale, and he ain't James Bond).

 

I will check out the books mentioned here -- thanks! I just won my second ever tournament today, but really, I feel like I have no strategy whatsoever. Right now, my only strategy amounts to only playing hands that are pretty good. That doesn't seem to work too badly with the crowd on Zynga, but something tells me I'd get creamed trying that anywhere else.
