tokan 16826 Report post Posted March 7, 2012 I'm not sure if you could consider this an underrated movie, Troll 2, this is more a movie that falls into the category that it is just so bad it's great. There are parts you literally can't stop laughing at because it's so bad. I mean there is actually a documentary about this film and how bad it is. And just too add to how bad it is, there isn't a single troll in the movie, not one!
dominoeffect 1077 Report post Posted March 13, 2012 The rum diary at first glance is the same movie... worth a watch though it is simillar, it has more social commentary.
Kate von Katz 49953 Report post Posted March 13, 2012 The Wall. Most of the people who love it are PF fans, stoners, or both. The first time I sat down to watchi it (which was only two years ago) I was expecting lots of sizzle and little substance. What I got was a cinematic piece of brilliance. It's sad for me to see such a work of art dismissed casually because it was a rock opera production. It's one of the best films ever made, in my opinion. Athos 108589 Report post Posted March 13, 2012 One that immediately comes to mind is Don't hear too much about the movie, but it is a good movie...IMHO Sure if I spent time thinking, I could come up with some more...and probably will RG I agree with you completely. De Niro is, of course, fabulous in everything. But this is a very underrated action film. In my opinion in compares nicely with similar movies that get a lot more attention, like the Bourne films. No gimmicks, fancy toys, super spies, etc. Good plot, De Niro being tough, and some great action sequences. Additional Comments: Another largely overlooked film by a huge Hollywood name. I've always liked this Mel Gibson film, even though I'm not a huge Gibson fan.

Athos 108589 Report post Posted March 16, 2012 (edited) I enjoyed "Whip It", the coming of age roller derby movie featuring our own Ellen Page. Brought back memories of watching Roller Derby in the 1970s. Edited March 16, 2012 by po***os
castle 38816 Report post Posted March 17, 2012 Hearts In Atlantis. A very touching movie about childhood and coming of age, one of my favorites with Anthony Hopkins. And definitely one of my favorite Stephen King movies 16 Blocks - Very gripping. Grabs you right from start and doesn't let go until the very end. Kind of an inspirational tale too
castle 38816 Report post Posted April 9, 2012 Not really a movie...but this little known (on this side of the pond anyway) BBC mini series was absolutely brilliant. Set in modern day it's very much told as a sequel to Robert Louis Stevenson's novel....but with balls! Although one doesn't really need to know the original story to enjoy it. It's a self contained story told in 6 episodes. It's a perfect mixture of horror, action, suspense, and comedy (there's more than a little of that wonderfully dry British humor). Great performances by everyone in this. An absolute blast, very entertaining, and I really recommend it

loopie 15358 Report post Posted April 12, 2012 George A. Romero was most famous for making zombie movies, but he also made this movie Knightriders about knights on motorcycles. It's not a gimmicky action film though. It's more of a slow paced sincere drama about an offbeat subject. And yes, that's Mr. Ed Harris there in one of his first lead roles. Athos 108589 Report post Posted April 12, 2012 (edited) Not sure whether it was underrated at the time, but you rarely hear about the Duellists, a beautifully filmed story of two officers in the army of Napolean Bonaparte from 1977, staring Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel. A more recent, and very off beat but intriguing film: Edited April 13, 2012 by po***os
tokan 16826 Report post Posted April 12, 2012 I'd have to add Crank 2 on here. And it's funny I know a lot of people prefer the first one but I just love how over the top this one is at parts. One of the funniest scenes in the movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZlT-X1bhig
Guest My***tLixx Report post Posted April 12, 2012 What movies have you seen which, upon first glance, you were expecting to be mindless, cheesy, perhaps campy fun...but were pleasantly surprised to discover they had a certain amount of unexpected depth, intelligence and maturity Two for me which spring to mind right now are: Get Carter (2000) The plot sounds pretty simple, revenge movie generic. Bad ass comes home for his brother's funeral. Bad Ass suspects his brother was "taken out". Bad Ass systematically hunts down and does away with the bad guys. I'm a huge Stallone fan so I probably would have enjoyed it regardless. And I was expecting simple shoot em up, car chases, explosive fun....which I got...but I was also surprised to see Stallone give some of his best performances in this movie, particularly in the scenes between him and his niece, as shown here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lwvAeLuMeo&feature=related There's a lot of really strong actors in this movie which lend a certain maturity to it which would otherwise be lacking from your average revenge flick. I haven't seen the original Get Carter from the 70's with Michael Cain so I can't really comment on it. But this one is one of my favorite action movies. Secondly, there's Robocop...Yes, this Robocop: I mean...it's called "Robocop" You know what to expect from a movie title like that right? right? Wrong! When I saw Robocop again for the first time, as a more mature thoughtful movie viewer (more so than I was as an 8 year old anyway :p ) I was surprised to see a very intelligent, well acted, subtle (or maybe not so subtle) social commentary on the Reaganism of the 80's. Strong performances by mostly everyone in this movie also lent it a lot of weight. Peter Weller really gave an emotional maturity to that character which was very unexpected but very welcome. Still remains one of my favorite sci-fi movies. Unfortunately the sequels were....well....pretty much what you'd expect from something called Robocop lol. But I still think this one's a classic So what movies out there are, in your opinion, underrated? Who knows? Maybe there's some gems out there which I haven't seen because I thought I knew what to expect. I really liked the movie Armoured, about Armoured Car guards that rob themselves and try to get away with it...it hardly got reviewed at all.
tokan 16826 Report post Posted April 18, 2012 I was suddenly reminded of a totally underrated movie on the another song game thread. Maximum Overdrive! It actually is a pretty bad movie but it was directed by Stephen King himself and the soundtrack was done by AC/DC who I love so it does have some redeeming qualities, lol. Gia Wren Marlowe 67985 Report post Posted April 18, 2012 I would have to say that Aliens is the most secretly feminist movie I have ever seen. Ripley is not only smart and tough, but maternal and kind. She is still feminine and sexy while being able to take charge in a crisis. I especially love that Ripley is able to be strong without the men being made to look weak and incompetent by contrast. The female child in the film is also a survivor, and there are a few other strong women mixed in there. Not to mention the main alien villain is the colony queen. :) But most of all I like it because I find that it's a very good film for it's genre even without bearing in mind how well women are portrayed in it.
Athos 108589 Report post Posted April 19, 2012 (edited) If you like gangster movies, Bruce Willis' Last Man Standing is a very violent and interesting look at a conflict between Irish and Italian mobs. Cato 160314 Report post Posted April 19, 2012 No doubt about it, the 2007 St Trinian's remake, with Talulah Riley, Gemma Arterton, Lily Cole, Tamsin Edgerton, Antonia Bernath, and other notables :) http://www.imdb.com/media/rm4010051584/tt0964587
tokan 16826 Report post Posted April 19, 2012 If you like direct to dvd movies where the writer, director, and main actors are the same person you'll love this movie :) And as a bonus you get to watch the Titanic sink again! What more could you want! This movie is actually pretty bad, but so bad at parts you can't help but laugh :)
castle 38816 Report post Posted April 19, 2012 If you like gangster movies, Bruce Willis' Last Man Standing is a very violent and interesting look at a conflict between Irish and Italian mobs. I think it was largely overlooked. Agreed! Love that movie. Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken in one movie...you can't ask for much more cool factor than that. Plus it's a quasi-remake of one of my favorite western's, A Fistful Of Dollars.......which is a quasi-remake of Akira Kurosawa's samurai film Yojimbo......which funny enough, was inspired by early westerns. tokan 16826 Report post Posted April 19, 2012 Another gem of a movie that I've seen recently is The Super Inframan! It's not a direct to DVD movie, it's a Hong Kong movie inspired by 1970's japanese TV. To say that it is interesting would be an understatement. The best way to describe this movie is a 1970's version of the power rangers except way more cheesier and completely ridiculous at points. Here is a link to the trailer if anybody is curious
Old Dog 179138 Report post Posted May 5, 2012 Just discovered this one.... and if you have the Movie network on demand, it is available until next week.... Nowhere Boy It's the story of a teenaged John Lennon - just before he found McCartney and Harrison, just before he formed the Quarrymen, when he was trying to find out why he was who he was... I really liked this movie...
castle 38816 Report post Posted May 5, 2012 Another, probably less known but good Clint Eastwood movies Clint plays a cop escorting a witness Sondra Locke (a prostitute) from Las Vegas to Phoenix, where all cops and the mob, plus a run in with some bikers to boot, out to kill them both RG Checked this one out a few days ago based on your recommendation RG and you're right. It was an absolute blast! Easily one of my new Eastwood favorites. The next one I want to check out which I had surprisingly never heard of is The Rookie, another self directed Eastwood flick. A buddy cop movie with Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen. How can you go wrong? lol I think these 2 scenes alone will be worth the price of admission and
tokan 16826 Report post Posted May 5, 2012 A movie that is near and dear to my heart is Tron. Now I know the last couple of movies I posted were extremely cheesy, to say the least but I'm actually defending this one for other reasons. This was one of the first films to use computer generated imagery in such a major way and it was ground breaking at the time. And if you consider that it was done with 1970's computer technology that makes the feat even more impressive. Now I'll admit it's not much to look at now, but it still has it's charm. And I also have to admit the plot, although cheesy at parts, is kind of neat. The idea of being pulled inside a world inside computers is intriguing. I guess I'm kind of showing my true computer geek colours here, lol.
