Love and Valentines

Recommended Posts

February 14th approaches and the day devoted to lovers and loved ones brings us remembrances of times past, sometimes a recognition of our present circumstance and our thoughts may go to wondering about where the future may lead us in this wide world of love.

There are so many kinds of love in this world. There is familial love. Ones parents and grandparents, ones siblings, children and extended family. These can be loves like no other and they have their own unique and special joys.

There is friendship love, that special love extended between friends. It is to have the confidence and assurance that there are people with whom one can share deepest secrets and have them remain between the two of you. These are the people with whom you can talk about anything without fear of judgement and knowing that they will respect your thoughts and feelings.

There is the love of nature. It is having the ability to appreciate the gentle rain or a blizzard with the same mind that so much enjoys a walk on the beach on a warm summers day. The smell of the air in the spring or the salt breezes can evoke feelings and memories or stand on their own as immutable signs of the love of nature in the moment.

If one is fortunate there is the love of work. There is the satisfaction of being involved in an important task that brings to you and others a benefit, and having the feeling that no one does it better.

The ultimate love may be for that one person who is the love of ones life, the soul mate. This is the love that we all seek and perhaps so few truly find. If you are with that person then it is a feeling beyond any other.

Above all is the love of life. Life is made of all of these different loves together, and is a continual rollercoaster in which these loves wane and then grow stronger. It is the rollercoaster of these various loves being lost and changing or being replaced. The love of life helps us with the ability to focus and move forward.

Love can indeed be that infamous two sided sword. Any or all of these loves can bring highs and lows They bring both disappointments but also periods of periods of euphoria. Wherever one may be at this moment in time, we are all a product of our loves, past, present and of what will be in the future.

So if it takes a Valentines Day to make us look at our loves then that may indeed be its best purpose.

Love is indeed a many splendoured thing. My philosophical thoughts for the day.

Happy Valentines Day
