I have a verrryy close gf thinking of moving here, Now the spas are way different and I mean Different lol then out west so she is concerned about this. What would be a better route to go upon her relocation...Is independent a better route to go, or is an Mp???? As her friend I have to be honest with her as moving is a big decision and I jusst want her to make to the right one :
Guest **oo**e Report post Posted May 23, 2012 How are they different out west ? I guess a lot of it depends on whether she is prepared to rent a place, have clients come and go, book appointments, etc and all of the administrative things or just show up and have someone else handle it and look after keeping the place organized, clean, etc. This thread explores many of the pros and cons. http://www.cerb.ca/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=81572
Guest **zz**x Report post Posted May 23, 2012 If she is concerned about having to do things she doesn't want to do then independent makes sense i.e. she makes the rules. If she is concerned about restrictions...er...restricting her then go independent. But, if she wants the security and company of having others around then the spa is the way to go! 1963Kennedy 10698 Report post Posted May 23, 2012 Start in a spa then later go indy if she wishes. When going indy, I've always thought it best if 2 girls could share the same place. Some rent a 2 bedroom apt just for work.

If she feels comfortable working in spa in the east, she will then be able to cultivate a good name for herself in effort to fly on here on as an Indy. Working in a spa for now will allow her to gather some capital to start on her own.

Then after getting well know consider moving on as an indy, but being indy can have some major drawbacks. If you are not a well organized or focused person, it can turn in to a disaster when having to do it all yourself. Seen if happen numerous times in the past. Boomer 33202 Report post Posted May 23, 2012 I agree with the last three posts, starting at a spa gives her a chance to settle in and get comfortable with her move. Also get to figure out the differences between Ottawa and West. If it doesn't work out she hasn't made any investment. Later once she's established a reputation and some regular clientele then go independent. Sure there are many more things she will have to take responsibility for but will be able to set her schedule a little more to her liking.
herelookin 3510 Report post Posted May 23, 2012 It is her reputation that will determine if she can succeed whether as an Indy or in a Spa. It may be easier, like many others have said, to start in a Spa... less overhead and expenses BUT it will be reputation that will be important... There are many examples of ladies whom, starting in a Spa, have gone on to having a dedicated following when they have gone Indy... and there are many examples of ladies whom, for their own reason, have gained a following and remained working at Spas. The commonality of both are that they have, whether Indy or Spa, maintained a great reputation.
Guest S***dst*** Report post Posted May 23, 2012 Spas are considerably less work than being independant. You don't have to worry about rent, supplies, screening customers etc etc You have to worry about finding someone to cover for your shift if you get sick or need a day off unexpectedly. Going indy you have WAY more freedom and are able to book your time according to your life...if you have kids, a S/O, parties up coming, a death in the family etc. However the above things you don't have to worry about...you will here (obv) It really depends on what she feels best for her. If she's never been in the business before and wishes to go indy she will definetly need to speak with other independant ladies before starting up to get every angle she needs to cover before inventing herself. Yes arguably starting in a spa to gain experience, then going indie is a good way to start. However be aware some places dont appreciate this; they see you as "stealing their client base" So the question is, what does she want to do.
Rubs 1380 Report post Posted May 23, 2012 i'd have to go with the majority. Go Indy but if you need to start with a spa to build up clientel decide where you want to live and work. Another option would to start a partnership or share a space with a current Indy.

TRUE, the SPA owners know that, meanwhile they get the benefit of the business and the lady gathers regulars. Most of us have had jobs to stay for a few years then move on to something else with with more responsibility and greater challenges. We leave with valuable experience and knowledge and sometimes clients who may follow.
whiteman 14028 Report post Posted May 24, 2012 Again, I agree with the rest here, she should start out at a spa, until she gets to know this place. I'm still curious, what's so different about spas out west? And what part of the west? I've been to some places in Vancouver, and they didn't seem all that different than here, except in price. Kennidikummings 9755 Report post Posted May 24, 2012 Thanks guys, I very much appreciate the feedback :) and as far as different I meant the services are much more "open" so to speak and the prices are more according to your sp prices here as alberta is an SP massage industry, as far as edmonton is concerned there are no just "rub n tugs" lol and from personal experience this is only the case in ottawa or is it just more hush hush? and if thats the case will someone fill me in lmao... The area out West is oil rich with salaries and cost of living go hand in hand. Tim Horton employees are paid more in the west compared to Ottawa......so I am told, therefore everything else cause according to scale.

I think that things around here are a bit more Victorian. Meaning that everything may still happen as elsewhere but we're all just a bit more embarrassed about it.
