'The Business of Sex' premieres March 27 on CTV

CTV

Think prostitution in Canada is against the law? Think again. While the economy is faltering, the sex business is a powerful, and legal, force in Canada, employing thousands of people across the country.

Premiering Friday, March 27 at 10 p.m. ET on CTV (visit CTV.ca to confirm local broadcast times), "The Business of Sex" is a new one-hour original CTV Documentary Special that explores how a practice once thought of as tawdry and unconventional has exploded into a booming and mainstream industry.

Despite what the general Canadian population may think, prostitution is not illegal, it's solicitation that is outlawed. Employing an estimated 20,000 sex workers in Ontario and B.C, most are not the traditional street walkers, as 85% of women working in the sex trade are escorts.

\Public acceptance has allowed the industry to flourish, but "The Business of Sex" explores the legality of prostitution and what is within the law and what is not.

The documentary features active escorts explaining their trade, and also visits a famous German brothel where old age pensioners get in for half price on Mondays and Tuesdays.

"The sex business has mushroomed around us," says writer and director Robert Duncan. "'The Business of Sex' explores the phenomenon of the industry and how the sex business has come out of the closet."

"The Business of Sex" was produced by International Documentary Television Corporation (www.doctv.com) in association with CTV Television Inc. Robert Hurst is President of CTV News and Current Affairs. Susanne Boyce is President, Content, Creative and Channels, CTV Inc.

Wow...wish I had TV...this would be an incredibly interesting program to watch! I'm glad to see the trade getting some legitimate coverage.

Dwindling audiences for conventional TV are making broadcasters take more risks. And at least CTV still has some staff left to do original programming. Lol.

I try to schedule my week around these days! Tuesday at my hair dresser, Wednesday with the free deliveries from Independent (grocer not SP of course) etc... not too mention the 10% discount for senior from Timmies!!

This was a very straightforward, evenhanded, and sensible treatment of the industry. A breath of fresh air! The inclusion of the married clergyman who unapologetically drops 10 grand a year on escorts was a nice touch.

Can you imagine living in Germany, quite an insight for some of you that have never visited, either Germany,Netherlands,Belgium. I visited Netherlands years back and watched the live sex shows, visited the Red Light District, but just look at the coin that is being dropped in the Brothels. The better thing is the ladies are taken off the street, to a safe area, get monthly checked by a doctor. The brothel shown last night was a cost of 10 million, has handicapp facility, everything you can imagine.

Final note listening to the SP "Belle" mother of 4, did you hear her comment on her income?

So from her comments on her income, would rates are not stagnant over the years, she drew in a 6 figure income.

I also laughed at the lawyers (Young) comment regarding our stupid Canadian laws. Its okay to open up gambling/lotteries etc etc (to break the law..our own goverment to ensure they get cut or piece of the pie) Can you imagine how quickly the gov would fuck up here if they legalized prostitution here.

The show (SP) also discuss how some boards really harm the SP by negative reviews, interesting enough if you were looking closely we know who those boards were.

IT was a quick snap shot of Business of Sex, thought it could of been a couple hours long.

What a bummer. I was not able to watch the documentary.

I don't think the SO and kids would of found it very interesting.

Wish there was some way I could view it. If anyone knows of a way I would be thankful.

I was very disappointed at how short it was as well.. can't wait to see what the lawyers working on decriminalization are able to do. I get on my soapbox often when it comes to our right to determine what we do with our bodies... it's not the concern of the government. But hey.. preaching to the choir on here.

I was so glad to see that they only showed women who enjoyed their work. I did an interview last weekend for a young lady doing her thesis on those exact misconceptions. She's doing her masters at Carleton university and was very enthusiastic about our profession. It warms the cockles of my heart to know people are getting more open and enthusiastic about our right to be sex-workers:mrgreen:

It doesn't sound like I really missed anything. I was disappointed to have not seen it, but clearly they played it up and didn't deliver.

I don't agree with you. :)

I thought it was very interesting. And for once, it was nice to see an objective analysis of the sex trade.

I posted the link to the trailer in my first post (page one of this thread). I taped it on my PVR and watched 1/2 last night before I had to retire for the night but I wanted to stay up and watch it all. From what I saw it was done well and shows our wonderful ladies here in a very VERY postitive light. I am very much looking forward to viewing the rest of it. Maybe if you email the guys who made it they will put it up on youtube.

I agree with Ariane, if there was the other population (other than SP's and hobbiest) watching it, it would be a real eye opener for them to watch, it was very objective and to the point..although very brief, with commercials etc..it was on the short side. If they had longer information/dialogue on the legal portion it would of been more interesting as well. The ladies that were, interviewed gave very objective realization of the trade today, so overall the message was delivered and I think that was the whole intent of the program was to simply inform the general public.

Absolutely.

Although we, the women and men involved in some way in this business, did not learn much, the documentary was certainly very information for people who do not know the sex trade.

And even if I already knew most of what was said, I still enjoyed watching "The Business of Sex" because in a way, it made me feel less isolated. I think that being an escort (or being a client) can be very lonely at times. You try to keep a positive view on things but with society constantly sending you the message that what you are doing is wrong, it can be difficult to remain strong and convinced of your perspective. Listening to all those people (providers, hobbyists, lawyers) explaning how the sex trade can be healthy and should indeed have a place in today's society was reassuring to me.

Sue Davis from this documentary (the sp with all the condoms and lube lol) is an advocate for safe workplace, coops, etc to help lessen the impact of the ridiculous anti-solicitation laws. Also much work is being done by the organization she is involved in on the whole topic.

Vancouver seems to have such a simpler way of dealing with this business, it seems, than other cities. In spite of the FACT it is a legal profession, it seems like a lot of you live in areas where you are targeted and can be charged for providing those services. Here, the focus is on the street trade -- such a small portion of the sex work business, but the most visible and the easiest one to make the most impact in a short period of time. I cannot for the life of me figure out what kind of reasoning goes into placing fake ads or arranging dates with sps in order to lay charges on clients and sps.

I think there is more on www. w c c sip . ca

Susi does post alot on the pacific version of the board that shall not be named. Hopefully she will find her way here and duplicate the info that she so generously shares elsewhere.

hey FO and everyone else!!

i have been a member here for awhile but don't have alot of time so don't get over here much, i will try to get over here more...

i'm glad people enjoyed the doc.

the ivanhoe pub featured in the movie is where we signed the incorporatio documents for canada's first sex worker cooperative and where we held the first meetings for the sex industry association we are proposing.

the BC Coalition also used to meet there on a regular basis and still do when we can as well we have entertained famous sex workers org's there like stella from montreal when they visit vancouver.

it's located on the edge of vancouver's downtown east side and i have been going there for 20 years. they have a sign on the wall "FTWA" (flesh trade workers association-the men at the pub named it and they wanted fighters, butchers and tattoo workers to be able to join too-lol)and a newspaper cover of when we were incorporated as the coop that says "Sex Inc"-

things are progressing here on the west coast and we are really gaining ground in the vancouver lower mainland.

i am on 15 committees including;

- SIWSAG- Vancouver Police, sex woker support services and sex workers working together to improve the safety of the sex industry community and decrease the harms caused by and during enforcement

- Living In Community- City of vancouver, business improvement associations, health, support services, neighbourhood houses, provincial government, sex industry workers all working together to balance perspectives on the sex industry.

Trade secrets advisory- designing occupational health and safety training for the sex industry as te foundation of our industry association as recommended in the "labour on the margins" report.

International sex work conference planning committee- some of you may remember stella's XXX forum, i was there and cried everyday.

we are planning a conference for vancouver next may and will be inviting 100 sex industry community memebers from across canada to attend- we will be finding funding, paying honoraria, hotels, flights etc.

we hope to be able to come together as a national body, agree on some basic terms of reference, aquire the committment of all of you to change and self governance and work on human rights together so people could return to their respective constituencies and begin to organize on a local level but we would all be sharing a common thread/objective/rules/ standards that would allow us to be the national industry association but with real localized perspectives from all stakholders included at the "table"

our plans include business owners and consumers, inclusion is the key.

2010 impacts committee

VPD policy procedure mannual revision committee

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Conference

Community Policing Partnership Car.....

if you go the wccsip dot ca web site you will find the "labour on the margins report" as well as under the news section a more detailed description of our recent activities.

please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, we welcome any and all input. also, if you would like information about how to begin to work with the systems in charge of protection we would love to share whatever we can to improve conditions for the sex industry and stop the ever increasing undermining/ destabilzing/enforcement against our industry.

love susieXXXO
