Meg O'Ryan 266444 Report post Posted October 5, 2012 So...my parents and brother don't want for anything. This weekend is our Christmas and I don't want to do the usual gift card thing. Give me some ideas on great, unusual, sure to be talked about (my rents spend the winter in Florida with people that have perfect children) gifts. Andee 220524 Report post Posted October 5, 2012 Something practical that they will use. Doesn't have to be expensive. For my dad's last birthday, I gave him socks designed for diabetics (non-binding) because he had problems with his foot being swollen. Although he had tons of socks (which were to tight) and can well afford to buy the diabetic ones himself, the jesture of going out and getting them for him was very appreciated. I also got him a coupon for a carwash.
CristyCurves 169032 Report post Posted October 5, 2012 I would like to suggest you make a donation to a charity you think they would support, in their name, that is a wonderful gift in my opinion, one that keeps on giving!
roamingguy 300292 Report post Posted October 5, 2012 Although a gift card, get gift cards for restaurants. Even people who have everything still need to eat and people like going out for dinner RG
mrrnice2 157005 Report post Posted October 5, 2012 A really unique gift that one can give to the person is not not wanting of anything is a goat. No Meg, no joke. World Vision Canada allows one to purchase a gift that gives less fortunate people opportunities. At World Vision one can purchase a cow or a chicken, or hens and roosters or fruit trees and seeds and garden implements that go to third world countries. If you purchase a gift then a gift card is sent to that person in your name and the gift is also a charitable tax deduction. I will also point out that only 5 % of financial donations to World Vision goes to administration fees. Last Christmas I both gave and received a goat, and I think its a pretty neat idea! Have a look through their catalogue at the link that follows. https://catalogue.worldvision.ca/Gifts/Forms/Category.aspx?name=animals Good heavens! Merry Christmas. :)

Guest jake_cdn Report post Posted October 5, 2012 I know that it is early but why not purchase a Christmas dinner for some people who cannot afford to feed their family locally. There are a number of organizations in Ottawa where you can arrange to do this. I have done it on a number of occasions in the name of my family and it has become a special gift for us every year. The thought of doing something that is so giving in the name of your family is a gift that your family will enjoy forever. My family has always appreciated the joys of Christmas and giving a gift such as this enhances Christmas for both your family and one that is less fortunate. It has become a very important part of our Christmas and hope it would do the same for your family. Merry Christams to you and your family.
Nathalie L 112512 Report post Posted October 5, 2012 Being as busy as we are, I often feel that the most beautiful gift I can give anyone is the gift of my time. I don't buy people gifts, but rather, I make them something meaningful. Last year for Christmas I painted bulbs for my mother and put all of our names on the bulbs with the year that I made them (my brother, step-dad, his daughter, and their kids, etc.). The year before that I made some picture frames and put some newly developed photographs of myself inside. My mom was always complaining about not having an up to date photographs! The contribution wasn't financial, but it was thoughtful and took some time. Perhaps you could make them something? Even if it's only your own homemade Christmas card? They can be quite elaborate! I made something like this one year: They were a huge success. I also made some empty generic ones so my family members could give them away.
roamingguy 300292 Report post Posted October 5, 2012 One thing our family has gotten away from is spending tons of money on gifts. We now agree, fifty dollar maximum from each person to each family member. Well except for my nephew, little kids deserve to be spoiled at Christmas But it got to be such financial pressure on all of us, paying off the Visa bill through to March. Now Christmas is much more focused on family, not on the material things in life, and family is much more important RG
Guest *ig*a** Report post Posted October 5, 2012 This may sound corny but why don"t you try making them something with your own hands, ie: cook them their favourite meal or knit something etc, etc.

I always cut off buying gifts for the kids at a certain age, and haven't bought anything for my brothers since they started having kids. I don't need anything, and they don't need anything. I don't see anything wrong with folks just getting together for the Xmas dinner and leave it at that. Maybe it is more fun to open presents, but if instead everyone brings something different for the dinner, that could also be fun.
