igab 5629 Report post Posted December 1, 2013 First part time job was as a bus boy at the old Rideau Tavern (on Rideau St near King Edward) in the coffee shop as I was too young to be in the bar. First full time job was as a front desk clerk at the old Towne House Motor Hotel on Rideau St. Today it is a Days Inn and I'm told it's not a very desirable property anymore. I worked the midnight to 8 shift on many occasions and I can remember at the tender age of 18 a woman calling down to request a wake up call in the morning. At the end of the convo she said "By the way, you have the sexiest voice I've ever heard!" She hung up before I could answer her but I debated whether to call her back and suggest we take it to another level....was way too chicken to do it...ha ha (plus at that age I was getting a lot anyway lol)
Katherine of Halifax 113932 Report post Posted December 1, 2013 I worked on a government grant, well I was paid every week. I was 16 and the supervisor was 17. We did things like clean beaches, ( laid on the beach) cut grass, (smoked it) and also helped the elderly. Poor people I am sure we did more harm than good. Anyway that was my first job and I was paid $117 and some change. I also put every penny in the bank and a few years later I made my first investment with it.

LMAO Apparently I had my childhood grass cutting business alllllllll wrong !! Shoulda been smoking it !!! to dull the pain of the hours of cutting it.....and should have saved it instead of spending every dime.

MightyPen 67414 Report post Posted December 1, 2013 Oh wow, this takes me back. I got my first job dutifully when I turned 16 at a self-serve gas station (one still made the "self-serve" vs. full-service distinction when referring to gas stations in those days...). I remember long weekend mornings, afternoons, and evenings trapped in the little glass box in the middle of the eight pumps, doing homework in the lulls, and the ever-present smell of gasoline.* In the summertime, once the sun set every insect within a half-mile seemed to make a beeline for the brightly lit glass booth. When I looked around I'd see the undersides of thousands of bugs of every shape and size, clinging to the outside glass, and me sitting in the middle of them all... * Also, weirdly, one of the other guys kept a stack of raunchy porn in a cupboard. Looking back: WTF?
Surf_Nazis_Must_Die 8958 Report post Posted December 2, 2013 My first job was at a small town cafe when I was fifteen. It was ideal in that I only worked thursday nights and saturday day shifts during the school year. Those two shifts a week gave me just enough for beer and records and still allowed for plenty of time to goof off with friends. Unfortunately, come summertime it was a different story! Suddenly I was working full time hours and getting called in on my days off because the so called "adults" would either call in "sick" or just stop showing up to work all together. the turnover in that place was unreal, even by service industry standards! Job prospects were slim and management put up with me so I wound up staying there right up til I graduated high school and moved away.
