The Dash Poem

By Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak

At the funeral of a friend

He referred to the dates on her tombstone

From the beginning to the end

He noted that first came her date of her birth

And spoke the following date with tears,

But he said what mattered most of all

Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time

That she spent alive on earth.

And now only those who loved her

Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;

The cars, the house, the cash,

What matters is how we live and love

And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.

Are there things you'd like to change?

For you never know how much time is left,

That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough

To consider what's true and real

And always try to understand

The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,

And show appreciation more

And love the people in our lives

Like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,

And more often wear a smile

Remembering that this special dash

Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read

With your life's actions to rehash

Would you be proud of the things they say

About how you spent your dash

Thanks Emma, very nice poem. Sorry to hear of your loss. My mother passed away in 1991 when I was in my early twenties after a short dash I suppose. I had time to tell her things I needed to tell her, but there's so much of MY dash she never got to see.

My deepest condolances too Emma. I have recently suffered a similar loss and although I realize that while the circle of life goes on, that does not make things any easier. To follow Igotaboner, you have the love of many here, and I am sure all our thoughts are with you.

Sorry for your loss Emm. It's a beautiful poem for such a sad occasion, but makes one mindful.

Let those you have comforted, comfort you now.

From what I have read on CERB, you are a wonderful, amazing woman and your mother must have been incredible woman for raising her daughter to be such a class act and good person. Please take a little solace in knowing that she is looking down on you with love and pride. You now have a guardian angel watching over you.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss Emma. That was a beautiful poem and I am sure your mother used her "dash" to the fullest. Take care and feel the love from the CERB community.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, Emma. You're an amazing woman in every way: strong, courageous, thoughtful, and you're a terrific mother, yourself. I'm sure you learned so much from your mother, and I've no doubt at all but that she was proud of you. Take things easy for awhile, if you can.

I hope that like the poem you look at the good....the fun...the best times in life with her.

Many of us can share the grief and loss and understand what you have and will go through and we are there for you......many of us are going through a loss right now.....:-(........and your poem to me has just brightened up my life.....

Hi Emma,

I can't even imagine how you must have felt dealing with the initial shock last week, I am very sorry for your loss.

You are a very wise and beautiful woman for taking the time to express your gratitude to the people who helped you get through this time and for sharing The Dash. I for one have been greatly affected by what you shared and am glad for it, we always need reminders that life is ephemeral- helps us live it to the fullest.

Thank you Emma, for continuously amazing myself and everyone else on this board with your willingness to really connect- truly appreciated, life is too short to live any other way!

Dear Emma:

Wish to echo Bethany's very apptly written message.... may I also add my condolences. The passing of a parent, who brought you into the world, is very difficult and traumatic experience. In this moment of sadness you were still

capable of giving & sharing the wonderful poem about LIFE.
